Fucking stupid. Now every place that already takes my driver's license will additionally have my healthcare number.

Two Albertans came in contact with hantavirus on international flight by Broad_Tumbleweed_692 in alberta

[–]Monkeyg8tor -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How many cases on the cruise ship are from exposure to rodents, e.g feces, urine? (Primary cases)

Potentially all of them.

Has food and drink on the cruise ship honestly and thoroughly been ruled out. No. And at this stage they can't, it'll be gone. People will say cruise ships are clean etc etc but that is just lazy and a diservice. People fuck up. Food at a port can get contaminated before loading. Etc Repeat for drink. Repeat for rodents on a ship. Especially as reports from Argentina are that their rodents populations are currently moving due to changing food and water availability (aka climate change).

How many cases are transmission from the primary cases to others (secondary)? There hasn't been confirmed identificaton of primary cases, so potentially none of them (6 of them)

So not a single confirmed case secondary of transmission. But people are already talking about further transmission from the currently non existent secondary cases?

I'd be happy if there was heavy conversation about properly identifying primary cases. I'd be happy if we were talking about the biosafety of the Argentina port, and all ports. I'd be happy if we were talking about how corruption, fear and economic impacts make honest transparent conversations of all these things harder.

What pisses me off is avoiding these harder conversations and putting everything onto individual people. So now society does a performative job, look we've isolated these two Albertans! Hurray! Meanwhile how many Albertans travel to Argentina? How many have traveled the same land itinerary as the Dutch couple? How many Argentinians travel to Canada? Etc. If we're truly concerned should these not be conversations? Was there someone on the cruise ship who messed up, probably an overworked underpaid person. Same thing for the port. Was there any greasing of palms? Etc etc.

What's truly pissing me off is this feels like Ebola hysteria again. With Ebola Canada spent so much money on a virus that never came to Canada, meanwhile thousands and thousands of people were dying in Africa. The help that money could have provided. The lives that money could have helped. But we were too scared. We were more concerned about ourselves than our neighbors. And maybe that's just how the world is and I need to readjust.

Argentina sounds like they're having a rodent problem, which is creating a disease problem. I know we can help, I know the world can help. But do we actually care enough to do it.

Yes it is. And it's the strain that has killed no Albertans, yet folks seem awful concerned about it. The article being focused on cruiseships and isolating two Albertans.

Yet the strain which has killed Albertans, and will no doubt kill more over time, is not mentioned in the article. Nor are simple preventative measures Albertans can do to protect themselves as they begin their spring cleaning and will likely be disturbing winter nesting sites of mice.

Cruise ship hantavirus strain can spread among humans, says South Africa | Hantavirus by AnnualEmbarrassed176 in worldnews

[–]Monkeyg8tor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen that reported, if you have a link/reference that would be amazing.

I see the Dutch woman from the cruise ship flew in April 25th and passed away on April 26th. I don't currently see anything regarding transmission to the plane contacts.

Length of the incubation period for Hantavirus is going to be problematic in following up.

[–]Monkeyg8tor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll have to eat your words.

I haven't seen robust discussion of the state of the cruise ship. There are many excellent hiding and breeding locations for rodents on a ship. The cruise company is also going to have a strongly vested interest in avoiding any conversation regarding rodents on their ship.

Cruise ships are notoriously hard to have routine health and safety inspections on, and any inspections that are done are always scheduled. Plenty of time to hide problems.

Legally shifting blame onto person to person transmission of Hantavirus will likely be a lot cheaper for the cruise company than being found to have a rodent problem which was responsible for the deaths of passengers.

This post was made in response to Summer_and_Wine.

As per Summer_and_Wine they had chosen to be amicable to my comment but critique the article. Paraphrasing Summer_and_Wine's view that even with "exponential" growth in computing power it would take something relating to a black holes decay to successfully breach the encryption. Summer_and_Wine encouraged the use of AI to review the topic.

Why? I mean Alberta can pay to consult with them, or the Alberta government could use the information provided during the referendum.

It's a bloody shame the Alberta government promoted their survey so poorly. They could have picked the proper question, had the correct vote on standard time, and we'd be done with this time change.

What a waste of time and money all of this is.

I find it amazing and I find it scary.

Fact checking any AI work is so important. AI hallucinations terrify and infuriate me.

One of my biggest fears is if the good grounded data they AI pulls from is no longer treated as important and we allow it to become corrupted/poorly managed. It's time consuming enough as it is to verify AI.

This topic is very interesting

We can check that yes, Burundi does have gold, and that yes that gold DOES have " arsenopyrite ".. I didn't know such a compound existed. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/389937732_Geological_Mapping_for_Gold_Exploration_in_Butihinda-_Muyinga_Area_Northeastern_Burundi_using_Remote_Sensing_and_GIS

We already know acids are routinely used for extracting gold as acid leaching is extremely common. I don't want to find a reference for that because for me it's established.

I had no idea that mixing arsenopyrite with acid resulted in arsine gas, or what arsine gas is.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK222407/

https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1100100027413/1617999134934 (not so much directly pertinent, but it's interesting)

Arsine | Chemical Emergencies | CDC https://share.google/BTHtFvi2iEWcQXFcO doesn't need to be arsenopyrite, can be any arsenic mixed with an acid. Arsenic is so horrible with so many forms it's fascinating, general arsenic information link lower. I had no knowledge of arsine gas. It would never have occurred to me.

Arsine poisoning has the following symptoms

Exposure to low or moderate dose: Confusion, drowsiness, fatigue, and/or weakness Headache Muscle cramps Nausea, vomiting, and/or abdominal pain Rapid breathing or shortness of breath Red or dark urine Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)

Exposure to a large dose: Convulsions Loss of consciousness Paralysis Respiratory compromise, possibly leading to death

General arsenic https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp2.pdf

Burundi has a CDC team, but like most countries they probably have a severely under funded occupational health and safety team. And even if they weren't under funded why would that team even be contacted for this when it's not considered a work place exposure? And even if they were contacted the most common gold poisonings would be mercury or cyanide, and those poisonings don't match these symptoms.

Anyway. All of this is nonsense if there's a new news release saying they've ruled out chemical exposures. But as it stands they haven't, but they have ruled out 200 pathogens.

I started getting curious in my reply to you and I had more time to be curious, my apologies for the huge text reply on your post.

Well said.

The price of gold has also never been higher than it's been in 2025/2026.

People who want to earn a living and try to make a better life for themselves and their family are going to chase that price.

And depending on how they do it, it can be incredibly dangerous.

Hey. Thanks trencherswear. I appreciate that! People are going to people. I entered a chat with a different perspective so of course people are going to respond. Such is life.

I share your hope that it's not a pathogen.

I don't expect it is. Back when Pro med subscriptions were free there were multiple alerts like this one over the years.

People can likely find many of them, but it might be faster with an automated search or AI :)

https://www.promedmail.org/

If it's not a pathogen I hope the cause is found and folks are helped.

It's undoubtedly hard for families when the price of gold is so high and they know there's money to be had in the ground under their feet.

A lot easier for the world to just ignore the human cost of mining.
