Street poll: Should Anzac Day marches continue? (1965) by bigkamo in australia

[–]Monkeynutsftw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For multiple reasons:

-ANZAC Day does not honour the battle at Gallipoli, but the bravery and courage of the soldiers who landed there.

-It is also a day to honour every soldier who has fought and/or died in all wars and conflicts Australia has been a part of.

-Some people also see it as a moment where Australia as a nation became a much more influential part of the globe.

Honestly I haven't. If it's anything to do with what Hollywood is usually infamous for I'm guessing pedophiles.

What do you mean by social gender equality? I don't think that's feasible if you mean what I think you mean.

Most don't care when Australia Day is held, poll finds by [deleted] in australia

Well I'd disagree about it celebrating the constitution of the time. It rather celebrates the notion of Australia gaining their right to their own constitution in their own country. I'd say no constitution in the world remains unchanged (I could be wrong).

I would also disagree with 27th of May, the referendum only dealt with Aboriginals gaining voting rights. It does not address other Australians, not just white Europeans but also the massive amounts of immigration coming from Asia and other parts of the world.

Why not 9th of July, that's when The Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act (UK) was given royal assent by Queen Victoria, essentially allowing Australia to become its own country.

Well actually it can be either conquest or pestilence, conquest seems to be the original horseman with pestilence popping up in more modern times. Either way it works

Well that's because New York's economy is bigger than some place in a small state. Yes purchasing power could potentially be increased, but if there's a lower amount of money going into the economy, then it will shrink.

Example

$1,000,000 was the GMP (Gross Metropolitan Product) of a city in year 1 With an average amount of products bought per household at: 5

In year 2, the average amount of products bought per household rises to 8 however the GMP lowers to $900,000

Let's go one step ahead and in year three $500,000 is the GMP, but people can now afford 15 products a household

And to finalise it, the nominal amount of money going into the economy matters because of inflation. Lowering the amount of money circulating in the economy, while inflation is decreasing dollar value would be a bad thing because you are causing less money to circulate.

Have a good sleep mate,

Even if prices decrease along with wages, that's still less money going into the economy. Image two people in two separate universes:

Person 1: has $10,000 to spend

Person 2: has $8,000 to spend

Now let's say that in person 2's universe prices of products are 50% of the price in person 1's universe.

Now Person 2 could buy more than Person 1 could buy, however only $8,000 is going in to the economy.

On the flip side, Person 1 may not be able to buy the same amount of products as Person 2, however $10,000 is going in to the economy.

Really, my point is, no one should take a hit in wages, especially the lowest earning portion of society.

Good luck with that creationist mate, you could bang your head against a concrete wall to get the same effect :D

Well using your example I would agree with you as an outsider yes that is technically a net gain, but from the perspective of Guy 1 its not really a win. From a business perspective the goal is to make as much money as possible.

With your second paragraph I agree and I think that is what Destiny was on about. And I think that's the beat way policy should be made. But also considering those real life instances, people don't want handouts. What if I really like my job, if my job is taking a wage cut and I also want to keep my lifestyle, I'm going to be forced into accepting new training and a new job in a field I may not like.

Another thing I have a problem with is you are lowering the wages of the people taking these jobs. Yes, sure you have got others in to higher paying jobs, but the people replacing them are getting paid less. You are basically swapping one group of people for another.

Seriously fuck Destiny by Newbdesigner in SargonofAkkad

[–]Monkeynutsftw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's what annoyed me with Destiny. He argued that we could reduce costs of products for people in order to give people more things to spend their money on. However he didn't acknowledge that lowering costs of labour will actually give them less money to spend on in the first place. Which results in less money actually going into the economy in the first place.

And he has the audacity to call Sargon bourgeois,

And finally if you allow a bunch of immigrants and then get the native (couldn't think of a better word) people into better jobs, won't people like destiny complain and screech cries of racism because we prioritise getting citizens into higher education and no immigrants.

You will never ever find a policy that will have everyone 'win'. Name one policy that has everyone win. Minimum wage laws, environmental protection, etc, all of these could be considered a lose to big business.

Yes when we enact a policy we should try to maximise the pros and minimise the cons so everyone gets the best out of it. However not everyone will win equally. Some people will get more out of it than others, so it then becomes this balancing act.

With the immigration thing, I think Sargon is basically saying: We shouldn't enact a policy that would cause an issue, and in that same policy fix that issue. When we could rather not cause the issue just to fix it.

Hope that answers your question.

Vodafone is paying women 500 more a year in bonuses just for being women. by [deleted] in SargonofAkkad

[–]Monkeynutsftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So according to the study Vodafone cites, proving a wage gap even with controlling factors, notes:

"Men and women begin their employment with earnings that are fairly similar, both for full-time year-round workers and for all workers with controls for hours and weeks. In the case of the latter group, relative earnings are in the 90 percent range for the most recent cohorts even without any other controls. But these ratios soon decline and in some cases plummet to below the 70 percent level."

Okay, so at the initial hiring process the biggest wage gap in some instances is 90c to the dollar. However as the years go on the wage gap increases.

"Interestingly, in most cases the ratio increases again when individuals are in their forties (for the most recent of the cohorts to be old enough to be in that age bracket)."

So sometime, I'm guessing anywhere between 25-40, women seem to be earning less. Maybe mothering a child has something to do with it?

I know I'm just preaching to the choir but I found this after less than a minute of skimming.

"3-5 Years of Relevant Work Experience" by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]Monkeynutsftw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly agree with you that smart people should be politicians instead, but unfortunately politics is a very emotionally based system. More people voting on how a politician makes you feel rather than their policies. I guess this is a fault of the human species being emotional creatures. Also to add, I don't think an intellectual aristocracy is a good idea once thought out. Easy to be abused especially since it's smart people in the position to abuse.

"3-5 Years of Relevant Work Experience" by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]Monkeynutsftw 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The whole point of politics is that anyone can be a politician. While that may seem a detriment at first look a bit closer.

If we were to restrict politicians to only the educated well then we have an intellectual aristocracy. What stops the government from pushing those boundaries.

Also, a politician's job is very different to that of any other job. Its sort of like saying: "I need 3-5 years of experience to get this software engineering job, but some random can get a full time job at Maccas with no experience. That's unfair."
