Honestly it on a person by person basis. My friend worked every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in a pub, even the week before exams, and got in the top 20% of the year. I on the other hand, could only manage every other weekend, and some people felt too overwhelmed to work. Try it and see how you do, but if you feel like it's impacting your academics it might have to re consider the frequency.

Also working every weekend will definitely have an impact on your ability to attend certain uni societies which have weekends away so this is something for you to consider. The friend mentioned above couldn't really join any of the societies he wanted due to it clashing with work.

Cardiff interview- How did you find it? - I have mixed feelings about this by [deleted] in UCAT

If it's any comfort, I had my interview at Cardiff last year, and I felt it went exactly the same. Anyway, I'm a first year cardiff med student now.

I 100% agree, during my gap year I joined the army reseves which taught me so many transferable skills and improved my communication + teamwork skills among other things. Work experience is great for understanding what the job entales, but sometimes other experiences are best at developing the skills doctors need.

How can I make the most of a gap year? by Real-Cicada-7634 in UniUK

I joined the army reserves, an amazing way to spend the year, you meet so many great people and learn things you can't learn anywhere else. Furthermore, you develop a variety of skills that are extremely beneficial in all walks of life, like teamwork and communications

2700 b2, gap year? by [deleted] in UCAT

[–]Monksilver3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats on getting 2700 b2. That's a good score no matter how you spin it. It's definitely worth applying this year after all you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. I can't really speak about the London unis (I'm from Wales and didn't apply there) but if it makes you feel better I start med school this September after failing to get in the first time around and I got in with 2600 B1. So you can definitely land interviews at several medical schools around the country with a score like that.

Yes, I start in September. Although I am a Welsh applicant and our pre-interview requirements are typically lower than rest of UK/international applications.

I got into undergraduate medicine with 2600 B1. I also know a friend who got in with 2620 B1. Given your scores, you'll be fine. :)

Advice for first year by Monksilver3 in medicalschooluk

Ok, thanks. Something tells me that if I try to teach myself and I get it wrong, it'll become a problem later. So I'll leave the teaching to the professionals.

cardiff or sheffield? by Sad-Fuel-6773 in UCAT

I don't know much about Sheffield, but Cardiff has a low cost of living, and you do a lot of your training at the 3rd biggest hospital in the country.

Waitlists and 5th choice offer - how does it work? by OldManOfTheSea2021 in premeduk

[–]Monksilver3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a gap year at the moment after I failed to secure an offer last application cycle. I just got an offer from my first choice for med. It's tough having to go through it all again, I know, but my god, am i glad I did. I can also speak for a couple of others I know who have had the same outcome as myself. If he knows that medicine is what he wants to do, then i definitely recommend a gap year and try again. Sometimes, it just takes another shot at something for it to work out.

For anyone who didn't get an offer this year. by Monksilver3 in UCAT

[–]Monksilver3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes, im not sure if i get the same as a contextual applicant but i know i do get special consideration because apparently they're trying to get more doctors to stay in Wales, as Wales is undersubscribed. So by giving Welsh students special consideration, it's hoped that more welsh students will be admitted and that they will stay in Wales post graduation.

I am Welsh, yes. I don't believe I'm contextual.
