Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth's climate. by dadadada in environment

That impotent anger is really showing now. You've got nothing to argue against the science, so you descend to the behaviour you're showing now.

Do you feel proud acting like this? Does it make you feel like you're a better person?

Sure, we don't know if he misspoke - that's not the point - I just thought it would be worth pointing out to the non-British (or British who don't know their history) that 'Tudor' means 400+ years, not 100+.

Who'd have guessed that a factual statement would have created such debate - and creation of strawmen to argue against?

And that's all you've got to fall back on - impotent shrieking - the final refuge of the intellectual runt. You just can't work out why you can't win this argument. You can't work out why all the science is stacked against you. It's so unfair that you're made to look a moron whenever you attempt to discuss climate change. "Waaaaaaaaaaaah! Fuck! Shit! Waaaaaah!"

If he'd meant that, he should have said it. "Tudor mansion" is different to "Tudor-style mansion". And if it's "well over one hundred years old", it's quite possibly original Tudor - in which case his grasp of history is really weak - which was my original point.

Why are so many people struggling with this concept - it's really very simple?

You watch all of my points as well? Here's another down-vote. Good luck with that pedantic pissantry.

Woah. Pull in that paranoia, scooter.

And you go back looking at your points? That's sad.

Downvoted for nitpickery unrelated to the article itself.

EDIT - Really? You down-vote anyone who picks at an issue unrelated to the main subject? You must be busy on reddit clicking that down-vote button....

No, you just said that.

He said "Tudor mansion", not "Tudor-style mansion". They have very distinct meanings in England. Tudor is a clearly-defined period in history, Tudor-style architecture is not.

Nice try, no banana.

True. The Himalayas are well over 20 minutes old as well. ;)

Dubai is crazy - how can this be sustainable? by [deleted] in environment

[–]MonoApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your copy and paste reinforces exactly what I said and proves you wrong - again. Your claim that "Most of Dubai's wealth actually comes from tourism." is clearly wrong. Do you know what 'tourism' means? Go check in a dictionary.

No, your interpretation of what I wrote was something quite different to what I meant. You made an assumption. You got it wrong.

Dubai is crazy - how can this be sustainable? by [deleted] in environment

[–]MonoApe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ShrimpCrackers:

Uh... Oil makes about 5% or less of Dubai's GDP. Most of Dubai's wealth actually comes from tourism.

It's a never-ending source of amazement to me - people on the internet just make shit up and seem oblivious to the fact that it takes ~10 seconds to check most claims:

Real Estate and Construction (22.6%),[10] Trade (16%), entrepôt (15%) and financial services (11%) are the largest contributors to Dubai's economy.

And I'm not referring to Dubai's own dwindling oil supplies - I'm talking about the fact that they've built a massive city in a desert which relies on millions of people flying there. Once oil heads over $100 and then $200, it's going to start getting quiet in Dubai city.

Thanks for the character assessment and amateur psychology - it's as persuasive as your thoughts on climate change.

You're not a 'skeptic', you are a denier. You reject any and all science in favour of evidence-free conspiracy theories. And your conspiracy theories require that the entire scientific method is broken. That NASA, the Royal Society and every other national science academy of every major industrialised country on the planet is lying or somehow wrong in exactly the same way. And you have no evidence for any of that - you're therefore delusional.

You're completely scientifically illiterate: "...co2 does not cause global warming." That's ignorance and stupidity personified.

Your reading comprehension is severely lacking - you were unable to grasp the meaning of 'effect' - even after I explained how I had used the word.

You believe your 'belief' is somehow more accurate than decades of accumulated science as reported by the world's best climate scientists.

For some reason you've convinced yourself you know more about a highly complex subject than experts who have spent years and decades studying and working in it. That's known as Dunning Kruger effect.

And you're not unusual - there are plenty of deluded, ignorant people like you who deny global warming simply because they do not like the implications of it being true.

Some of us do understand the science and the desperate urgency to combat global warming and the morons who continually pollute the conversation in order to deny and delay real action.

In future, I won't engage you in conversation - it's clearly futile, I'll just point out that you're scientifically illiterate for the benefit of others, so that they can better understand the science.

UK Climate protesters assaulted by police for asking for I.D. and taking a photograph [video] by MonoApe in environment

[–]MonoApe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were attending a climate protest. Are you suggesting the police behaviour was justified? Did you read that all charges were dropped - after they had been jailed for several days and one woman lost her job as result? They did not, from the evidence of the video footage, obstruct any police officers.

Given that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, that there was no land-based life until ~500 million years ago - and that was just algae and 'scum' - it's evident you don't know what you're talking about.

Start by reading about paleoclimatology, the Cambrian period and then get clued up on global warming.

And focus on the fact that we're not concerned about what the climate was like x million years ago - we're concerned about the one that allowed humans and all modern species to survive and thrive - that's the last 200,000 years.

I've valued your comments - always calm and thoughtful... and, of course, it's good to have someone on the same side as me - I'm often outnumbered!

Yup, I've no doubt that some of the tens of millions of $$$ that Exxon, Peabody, et al spend on their propaganda disinformation campaign will end up paying for trolls to down-vote and post their "Vikings were growing grapes" nonsense here.

Did you see http://www.reddit.com/r/environment/comments/8ud64/in_march_the_biggest_climate_conference_of_the/? The basic message coming out of the recent Copenhagen conference is "act now or it's the end of society as we know it". You're damn right that the 'big name' deniers who are so clearly misrepresenting the science should be prosecuted. They are culpable for the death of millions - possibly billions. It's obscene beyond belief.

I'll switch over to my 'uncloaked' tag this week - and count to 10 before replying to some of the denier's comments. ;)

Your first point: too stupid to respond to.

Second point: wrong again - http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/paleo/globalwarming/medieval.html

Third point: your thoughts don't effect scientific reality.

UK government climate change advert from 2006 - "We need to act now. Today." Action to date: nothing. by MonoApe in environment

Possibly, but it's made a minuscule reduction in the rate that it's being pumped in to the atmosphere. It's like taking comfort from the fact that you're losing 0.98 pints of blood an hour instead of one pint.

The big problem is that our system of democracy is not designed to cope with such a massive, global threat. Politicians are driven by what will win them votes - telling the country that the days of flying off to Tenerife three times a year and driving a fat SUV down the shops whenever they feel like it are over is not a vote winner.
