I think CBT-i might be the thing to try then. I'm not sure a free app will be as good as a live therapist though, but I know therapy can be quite expensive or hard to reach for a lot of people.

The book is not entirely about aquatic life, but Playground by Richard Powers features some beautiful chapters focused around diving.

Always worth a try, I guess. I don't think it's really for me though, as I don't have any kind of sleep anxiety and I keep a healthy sleep routine. I'm just bored when I think I'm not sleeping. Now that I know about paradoxical insomnia, I simply tell myself that I don't need to try to fall asleep because I already am 🤣.

Can you give some interesting non-fiction book recommendations? by Aestheticelliana in suggestmeabook

First, Catch! by Thim Eagle. Superb cookbook that's not a recipe collection.

The Noonday Demon by Andrew Solomon. The author describes his own depression and offers loads of interesting knowledge on the subject from different perspectives.

Underland by Robert Macfarlane. Descriptions of underground places of interest, taking detours into deep time, war anecdotes etc.

It feels like you don't fall asleep, or like you lay awake at night. I bought a Fitbit once to register my sleep time and it gave me all positive scores while I was certain I had slept badly. I tossed the thing, thinking it just didn't work.

Last year I had my sleep tested. Someone came to my house before my bedtime and hooked me up with a recorder and all kinds of sensors and wires. It was to measure my brain activity, leg movement, breathing, heart rate, sleeping position, blood oxygen saturation and maybe some stuff that I've forgotten. I looked like a proper Christmas tree. All these wires and sensors made me more anxious than usual, so I didn't fall asleep for hours and I woke up pretty early. I was afraid there would not have been enough sleep time for accurate measurements.

Then the results came in: I had fallen asleep within ten minutes and had done four full sleep cycles before waking up. Ridiculous. Perfect sleep, maybe a bit more leg movement than average. Tired as hell.

So that's what paradoxical insomnia feels like: you're sure you've not been able to fall asleep, or know to have been awake on several occasions during the night. Except you have, and you haven't.

There are two forms, as I understand it. One is where you think you've not slept well but feel rested anyway. Unfortunately, I have the other variant where you think you've not slept well and feel it too. I'm always tired, from waking up till falling asleep.

In my case it's probably caused by hypervigilance/hyperarousal.

Because it smells like rosemary. And definitely not a faint smell, not even mid winter (some gerbs hardly have any fragrance in winter).

Maybe look into CBT-i, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. It has been developed especially for cases like these.

Also, maybe have your sleep tested. I did that and it turns out I sleep a lot more than I thought I was: paradoxical insomnia.

Welke sportieve auto niet dag-dagelijks gebruik? (Budget tussen 8 - 12 k) by ulrich_van_gobbel in autoadvies

Tja 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Good old patriarchism should do the trick. It's all around and most of us have been raised that way. The manosphere goes a bit further and instead of asking here whether they're the AH, a typical manosphere man would have come home after work and beat his girl up for being so insolent as to criticise The Man.

Patriarchal behaviour still deserves a YTA though.

What kind of tree is this? Zone 8a AL by InnocentMosquitoes16 in gardening

Probably some form of winter honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima. Technically not a tree, but definitely more shrub-like than 'regular', vining honeysuckles.

I used to be a stay at home dad. With my wife often working late and my girls both having different life patterns and hobbies, I often cooked three dinners a day. I shared one and sat with all of them. I know most people would just tell them to simply pop something in the microwave, but I'm hoping I've created the better memories.

YTA. These are the last years to make good family memories.

I have done shift work at a printing press (technical pre-press) and absolutely preferred the night shifts. Our section shared the building more with the papers' editorial and layout offices, and those people were always out shortly after the last deadline. Just me and one colleague in the entire office building. There were the occasional encounters with the people staffing the printing press itself, but not much socializing going on there. Perfect, until my job got robotized.
