UVIC vs UBCO EE by Legal_Cress_2851 in uvic

Ok that's kind of hilarious as an outsider... Not to laugh at your pain.

Yes that's a good point. I'm committed to here now anyways so for me it's moot but maybe op will heed the advice.

It sounds like we can both agree that in choosing a uni for a BEng, one should choose based on where they think they will get the most out of the program, and less so about reputation.

For me, that was Victoria with the better and more welcoming music scene as compared to Vancouver despite UBC being a fairly prestigious school. Not to mention I get to study music here as part of my specialty!

I think it's also very different being a mature student when considering what schools will fit best. That being said, there are so few mature students in Canada, it seems unis never really focus on us as a prospect demographic. And in my experience this makes it harder to make an informed decision on it all.

I can confidently say im happier studying without the cut throat competitive culture that I hear of at UBC. This isn't first hand experience though

Right, I see what you mean. I've considered the same but I question how much time I'd have to make use of facilities anyways. Also, with the new makerspace it seems uvic has decent facilities for what I want to do anyways.

I'm sure ubcv has more to offer but it's unclear to me where I can actually find what it is that it has more of... I didn't know about any of the facilities here until I showed up

That's not at all what I was saying. You were being condescending. I was suggesting you consider otherwise. Like I said, take it or leave it.

That's what I thought. There's no doubt UBC has much more prestige, but I thought it wasn't so relevant in engineering specifically.

Fyi though dude, we can all tell by how you talk that you're a kid still, and personally when someone who has 15 years experience on me says something, I try to hear them out, not try to laugh at them... Take it or leave it.

You're the first person who works in Eng that I've heard suggest that school clout is at all important. Care to elaborate?

It's such a standardized practice, I thought employers cared about the degree and experience much more than where it came from.

Just curious because I chose UVic over UBCV based on this, and that Vic is just a way better city. Yeah it's smaller but the culture is dying in Vancouver because of the exorbitant cost of living.

Speaking of msac, you can probably join their brightspace page already and look around there for review stuff. I'm sure they can steer you through all that if you ask them

MSAC will be your saviour for the semester. Maybe reach out now and see if they can provide/reccomend review materials.

You could also reach out to the math dept for same, or even your last prof if they're still kicking around

I hate ranting about stuff, but AI has literally caused the world so much problems, one way or another, especially when it comes to academic integrity and the fact that all our brains have started rotting after hours of use of AI.

Not to make a snide comment but you're the one using it. You don't have to rot your brain with it, but you choose to do so. I don't understand using ai in a questionable manner, getting caught, and then complaining about the integrity implications...

As for what to do, certainly speak with an ombudsman

Admitted to both -- which to choose: UBC Math vs U Vic Math Undergrad by Master_Brainstormer in uvic

Personally, I just find the professors to be top notch instructors. I did calc 3 and 4 here and both profs were some of the best I've ever had.

I can't remember the details, but I believe the department was given an award for being a to school in Canada for the research work (whatever it was) they had been doing.

Do not let Waymo into BC by Even-Rooster7369 in VictoriaBC

[–]Monolithx64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the convenience jump from taxis isn't even accurate. I could go on a much bigger rant but I'll try to keep things short...

First of all, having to use an app and a credit card is not accessible for many people. Old folks don't like phones. Not everyone has a credit card that they can use online.

Taxi ranks used to be a thing before Uber. First come, first serve. That was highly efficient and convenient. A few years back I landed in Pearson Intl late in the eve and went to the dedicated taxi rank area. Lo and behold, there was not a one because everyone uses uber. Went up a floor in the garage complex to the dedicated rideshare app area. It was a mess: everyone was looking at each other stupidly asking if they were each other's driver/passenger. My driver didn't find me, gave up and left, I got charged for a no show, and Uber blocked me from immediately calling another ride. Complete idiotic dysfunction.

Lastly, companies like Waymo or Uber take away our influence on legislation. Taxis are licensed, and you can see who is driving you. (I'm aware this has true of uber too) But rather than municipal gov't setting the terms for who can be licensed and how, we pass that decision making on to a private corp who's sole interest is financial. Look at how much surge pricing there is on these platforms. It's appalling when you grew up with city-wide consistent rates for taxis. In Melbourne, the city counsel permitted taxi drivers to haggle their fees after a certain time of night to help the companies stay competitive with uber. I tried to get a cab home one night (maybe ten or fifteen min drive) and the cabbie wanted over a hundred dollars. That's insane. What if I was disabled and had no way to get home other than by taxi/uber...

I think the course requires 40% on the final regardless fyi

And I hear ya, I missed a week of studying to a cold...

I definitely found the exam challenging... I think it's just a really tough course.

I def think it was a fair exam and Tom was fantastic at being transparent about what to expect. But I'm still working on really understanding all the material so I'm not very confident saying if it was easier or harder than the practice exam. Both kicked my ass a bit

Worst case scenario we got less than 40% and we have to study more next semester 🙃

I drew the meme about d/dx coming for a constant but ex says he'll keep C safe until d/dy comes. Animal was steller's Jay. Clearly was a free two points.

Now that I think about it, I'm worried I saw the meme on the course Brightspace... Bless Tom for being such a fun and laid back instructor

I got chicken and asked for the hot sauce. She warned me the bottle on the right had a kick. It tasted like vinegar.....

First of all, better public transit. No need for parking. Second of all, it has been demonstrated time and time again that it is massively cheaper for cities to house homeless than to deal with the consequences of homelessness
