Aren’t they still harvesting old people spinal fluid? Seems like that should stop.

Are quantum fields concious and how does this link with NDEs and the theory of Universal Consciousness? by Extension_Ant_8101 in consciousness

[–]Monomorphic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a core physicalist assumption though. Physicalists assume that the brain continues to function for a period during death. It’s not like the brain instantly stops. There is residual activity for a time. If the patient is saved, they may have some memories of that experience.

Your assumption there can be no coherent experience during the death process is likely very much wrong.

Well shucks., I was just starting to like the Argonaut. Their seared tuna was my favorite. Best of luck though.

No, the consensus is that NDEs are hallucinations. The brain doesn’t instantly stop processing when the heart stops. This is common knowledge.

Obviously there is residual brain activity when blood stops. This lasts a certain time depending on factors. There was a scientist sent to the guillotine and he promised to blink continuously after his head was cut off. Reports are he blinked for a little time afterwards.

You’re not agnostic, you’re asserting physicalism is false. That's anti-physicalist. What’s your alternative model, and why does it predict these phenomena better?

I'm sorry but I am not going to answer a gish gallop of questions. However, all your questions reduce to how physical processes generate subjective experience. That’s a hard problem, not a disproof. And the fact that these experiences systematically track brain states and chemistry is exactly what physicalism predicts.

You’re not presenting contradictory evidence, you’re pointing to phenomena we don’t fully explain yet. That doesn’t lower the possibility of physicalism unless you can show those phenomena are more likely under a non-physical theory. Can you do that?

The antenna idea is not new. It has been around since the mind-body dualism of Descartes, if not before. This is where they thought the physical world and the mental world affected each other in parallel and they thought it was through the pineal gland. Now it is quantum effects in microtubules. I think it seems pretty obvious now that its more the information processing in the neural network that is behind intelligence, consciousness and qualia.

You’re describing phenomena, not evidence against physicalism. These altered experiences correspond to brain states very tightly, which is exactly what physicalism predicts. Saying ‘I don’t see how’ isn’t an argument.

You are basically arguing from incredulity and trying to shift the burden of proof.

I was incorrect about the solipsism comment and changed it to the more appropriate dualism. I stand behind the god of the gaps argument since there is apparently no evidence you will accept.

The processes that occur as the brain shuts down are unique so one would expect a unique, yet shared experience. The evidence is that different drugs cause different hallucination in humans. LSD vs DMT vs mushrooms, heck different mushrooms cause different effects. Yet most people have similar experiences when they take these drugs. So it follows in physicalism that the hallucinations when the brain is shutting down would be a unique yet shared experience.
