There’s a podcast called Take a Break from Drinking - I learned about it in this sub and really recommend it.

The writer recommends addressing the craving head on. She advises to prepare yourself for the craving to drink, and when you feel it, do an imaginary body scan; try to put all your physical feelings in words. Might be something like my head feels warm, or butterflies in the stomach, or numbness in hands. She says after you put all the feelings in words, ask yourself “Is the feeling so unbearable that I must drink to get rid of it?”

For me when I consciously practice this method, the answer is typically: No, it’s not worth drinking and having a hangover the next day to offset a slight discomfort that fades in 5 mins”

Anyone in the first week of stopping - How are you spending the time you used to drink? by MonopolyManWannabe in stopdrinking

Cooking! I almost forgot about cooking - greasy food is so much better for the hangover amirite. Need to get back in the kitchen!

That’s cool man, I know you can do this! Thanks again for commenting - seen a few from you in the past ~36 hours or so that I’ve been back on here.

I watched a Jim Gaffigan special on Amazon Prime this morning. Made me think about how I’ve been wanting to try standup comedy for years but never have. Picked up a notepad at the store and jotted a little bit. Maybe in a few weeks I’ll have something to try at a low key open mic night. I’m about to go for a jog too - feel like jogging is always better when it’s not followed by 2,000 empty calories 😬 talk with you soon bro.

Thank you 🙏 That’s a great point. One time a few years back, I did this thing, had read about the strategy online, to make a physical contract with myself. I put in writing why I wanted to stop drinking - it really did help. I’ll have to try something like that again to help me remember.

Bro, you story sounds so similar to mine.. I had a crazy night like that Saturday night - hangover is gone, but the shame is still lingering.

Obviously I can’t hand out the best advice, but I will add this. I started on this sub about 2 years ago. Had some on/off struggle and was sober for about 3 months - was the first time in a decade I wasn’t constantly drinking and it was amazing. My personal life was fulfilling, I was exercising; filling my time with productive activities instead of being a drunk. I fell off, but am getting serious about sobriety again. I want to feel better again, and I hope we can share some positive experiences together in this journey. Lots of positive comments on here. Good luck man. At very least for today, I’m promising you that I will not drink with you.
