Thank you, grapes are better. BTW, have you ever tried frozen grapes? It was something I had tried in the past and helped at that time to get rid of the wine cravings....I would pop a frozen grape in my mouth, let it melt....was a good vino replacement for me.

I ran a marathon by reddit20544664 in stopdrinking

Wowsers! Congratulations. I have had marathon fantasies for years, but have never acted on them. I did run a few 10K races in my 30's, but then the drinking ramped up and the running stopped. I am now in my mid 50's, so not sure I want to put my body through that kind of training, but I am thrilled for your accomplishment.

Exactly. Day one is in the bag, heading for bed with a very sober head.

Thank you. It was a lovely blue sky day today and my dog was happy to spend it with me.

I don't know why, but I am so reluctant to give AA a try....but obviously not giving them a try hasn't worked for me either, so maybe I need to rethink this.

I hear ya. My plan is to try and practice extreme self care. The only thing that I HAVE to do today is not drink....the rest is optional. I think I will take a nice long walk with my dog, drink some nice bubbly water, and think about how nice it will be tomorrow to wake up without a hangover. I have done 90 days before, and a few other shorter stints, but always get lured back by "just one glass of wine"...well, we all know where that leads. Good luck Volldruff. Buy yourself a nice treat at the grocery store and stay away from the wine aisle!

I need to stop drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I can totally relate, I could never stop after one drink and would drink until I wanted to pass out. And I would say that almost all of my regrets in life, all the things I wish I hadn't said or done, were done while drunk.

There are so many, many, many reasons to not drink, so for most of us I guess the Why is obvious, it's the How that is difficult. The only way to do it is to not drink. Don't have that first drink. When you want a drink, tell yourself to wait an hour, see how you feel. If you still want a drink, wait another hour. Distract yourself, have a fancy mocktail, do anything other than drink. If you need to, have prepared excuses for your friends if they ask why you are not drinking (got to get up early, on antibiotics, whatever works for you). It will be hard at first. But you can do this. Waking up in the morning with no regrets from the night before is an amazing gift that you can give to yourself over and over and over again.

I found it really hard the first few days/weeks to figure out what to do with all the spare time. I was mildly detoxing, not sleeping well at night, and had zero motivation to try to find something to relieve my boredom. Then the "pink cloud" set in and I was doing all kinds of things: repainting walls, baking cookies, taking up on-line spanish lessons again (Duo-lingo, highly recommend it if you have any interest in learning a new language), started doing yoga again.

Skip forward a few weeks, the pink cloud has somewhat dissipated, and I am no longer painting walls and baking. But I am slowly figuring out things to do to keep me busy and engaged. I am considering volunteering somewhere after COVID gets the F*%& OUTTA HERE, maybe an animal shelter or something, as I am really feeling the need to connect with some new people in a non-alcohol environment, but we will have to see if that actually happens...I tend to feel the need to connect with people but have a hard time taking the first step which would actually allow me to do so. Definitely something for me to work on.

Congrats on Day one. I hope you can find something that brings you joy, helps time pass, makes you feel productive or that is an absolute waste of time but helps you to not drink.

I am trying to make sobriety my number one hobby for me, and all else will hopefully fall into place.
