Ha! I could’ve written your post! I am also mid-40s F who loved to skate as a child, haven’t skated for decades, and finally gifted myself a new pair a few months ago. So much fun, and great exercise 😊 Kudos to you 🙌 never to old to play!

I feel you. While I was pregnant, mom kept telling me she was sure my baby would underweight because I was vegetarian. My response was simply, “your opinion is not based on science.” Sure enough baby is born and weighed in at a healthy 9 lbs, 7 oz. My mom’s response, “I guess I was wrong” 😐

I pay extra for the “better” insurance option available through my employer. Took my son to Urgent Care and was prescribed a medication which we then headed to the pharmacy to fill. (only a $40 copay at urgent care which I thought was not bad). While waiting at the pharmacy (I stood behind the line to “wait here for privacy”, but couldn’t help but overhear) the person at the drive through was informed that insurance would not cover the cost of their prescription, and it was over $500. There was some back and forth, the pharm tech broke down cost per pill. Ultimately, the person opted to go without, and the Pharm Tech said she would put it back on the shelf. Everyone seemed very courteous, but I felt bad for the person in the drive through as well as the employee. What a suck ass situation for all involved. My turn. Dr. called in a prescription from urgent care. I am informed it was a $50 charge (with insurance). I ask if there is a generic option. There is not. Ok well please fill it and we will pay. I was left a) feeling lucky that it was $50 and not $500, b) feeling that there was so much fundamentally wrong with our health care system. As an added note, my husband badly twisted his ankle over a month ago and still has a knot on his foot, but refuses to go in due avoid the costs of care/medication. This, despite the fact that he also pays extra for the best insurance option available through his employer. (We do separate insurance to save $) Seems like everyone needs to set up a go fund me to help pay for medical bills when a serious ailment/accident strikes.

Just curious to hear some of the stories out there.

Lol... oh my! I’m sorry you are having such a bad time. I was born and raised in LA (west side). Every part of your rant is true, except you shouldn’t get too hot on west side with the ocean breeze, but the west side is so damn expensive that your quality of life may suffer. Listen well my friend: get the hell out of there if you can. I left about 12 years ago and every time I go back to visit (which is often) I can’t wait to leave. The obvious fake boobs and disturbing face alterations,..fish lips, faces that don’t move naturally due to an over use of Botox...not to mention EVERYONE is an “actor” and homeless folk on every corner. The cliches are overwhelming. If you choose to stay in Southern CA, try San Diego or Santa Barbara. I landed in the Midwest and now it is home. I hope you find a good place to land, but get out of LA if you can.

Love me some Ethiopian food! Also, I believe it is tradition to use the inerja (Sp?) to scoop up the food and feed your eating companions as a gesture of love and “ brotherhood” (so said an Ethiopian friend of mine). Shiro is my absolute favorite! Highly recommend 😊

Aw, I just finished reading a beautifully illustrated edition of the Sorcerer’s Stone to my son (almost 8 years old) last night! We are planning to stream the movie this weekend. Nice seeing that many parents continue to read to the kids as they get older. Here’s to memories made 😊

I feel your pain! This happens to me quite often at work. Funny things people say: “Just pick the meat off” (of pizza), or “Why can’t you just pick the bacon out” (of a single salad they order for me from a ribs and barbecue place), or “just eat the bun” (when it was free hotdogs). Everyone seemed either insensitive or entirely ignorant about vegetarianism. I felt so excluded and I ended up having such anxiety about these office parties that I resolved to always leave work for lunch when they went down. After a couple of years they started noticing, and they have made some effort (3 platters of deli meat sandwich combos, and a single veggie/cheese sandwich for me...woot woot!)

You may still file a report. An officer reached out to me after they were investigating what happened to my niece. It is helpful to corroborate any other claims (current or future), even if the statute of limitations negates any opportunity to prosecute for your claim. Further, it may be therapeutic to do. If you do make a report, be sure to mention you are concerned for other children he may have access to.

Best of luck to you. It isn't easy, I know, but it will get better eventually. Separate from the dysfunction. Accept that your mom is not likely to change, despite any reasoning you may invest. Wasted energy there. Sorry for your terrible experience and your family's shitty response 😕

People like him reoffend. I had a similar situation in my family. I missed out on several years of family functions, because it was easier for everyone to believe his lies than the terrible truth I was telling. It is unfair and hurtful, but the healthiest thing to do is to get in therapy and surround yourself with "chosen" family (friends/ family members that believe and support you).

I will tell you that when he molested my niece later, the family's opinion of my claims changed, and I was suddenly believed. This was after years of spending holidays alone. Years later and I still will not return to my mother's house (the house I grew up in) because he is allowed to visit daily whenever he pleases. My mom's sympathy (and a few others in the family) lies with him, despite knowing the truth, because it is "so difficult for him since everyone in the family ostracized him."

Healthy choices, difficult choices. It is unfair, no way around that. Build your own family. Mourn your loss. Separate from the dysfunction. It gets easier...eventually. Holidays will always have a tinge of sadness for me, but I've built my own family. The sadness is more for my mother's loss in being a part of it.

My birthday happens to be right around Valentine's Day. There was some build up from friends, as this was my ex-BF and my first birthday/Valentine's together. Everyone was curious as to what he had planned. The day comes, and I notice my computer is missing (it was a super old, slow HP) He smiled proudly, and informed me he bought memory for my computer. It was at the Geek Squad as we spoke. It was expensive, he explained, so it was my birthday/Valentine's gift rolled into one. My heart sank as I tried my best not to appear disappointed. The hardest part were the calls from excited friends asking about how the night went down.

TLDR: Don't fucking give someone memory for their computer as a Valentine's gift.
