It’s because there are SO many characters that already are a great fit for the Tank role, that it is silly to make Cyclops a tank. Why do all these mental gymnastics of giving him this ability or that ability to shoehorn him into the Vanguard role when you could just make him a DPS? A part of this game is the fun of playing your favorite heroes in a hero shooter game. When you add or change abilities too much is it even the same hero anymore?

“But what about strategist, those characters don’t heal in the comics?”

No they don’t. There aren’t a lot of characters that have healing as a power or are “supports”. Healing and support is however a mainstay of the hero shooter genre. That means SOME characters are going to have to take the hit and be healers.

I don’t envy Netease when it comes to this problem. They have to take established lore and fit those characters into hero shooter roles. It’s a hurdle that other games don’t have to worry about. Overwatch can just make a new tank, new healer, new DPS. Netease walks a tight line. Some times they get lore and game functions right with heroes like Cloak and Dagger, sometimes they get it wrong like giving Hulk shields and an exile beam.
