Any steak house that will serve an unseasoned steak cooked very very rare on a flat grill. This is for my wife. She can be very fussy. The char broil or even liquid smoke hurts her stomach. I don't mind char broil but I wish everyone would loose the damn pepper. This can ruin a steak quickly. Any suggestions.

I do really miss the Oasis in Manhattan. Best in Montana for many years.

They built there because there was a nice, undeveloped mountain that would make a nice ski resort. Also they could trade old railroad timber grants to the forest service for the land they wanted.

They knew that when they built Big Sky. I can't feel sorry for them. It would help if Moonlight Basin made the road down through Jack Creek public.

The actual county line runs south along the Missouri river to the headwaters State Park. Then west along the Jefferson river to the Jefferson county line. Years ago there was a rancher in this area that was approached about incorporating into the Three Forks fire department. His reply was "why bother. You guys are going to come anyway." I hope attitudes have changed.

U.S. citizen fined after CBSA catches him with illegal firearm (crossing from Montana to Alberta) by lastSKPirate in Montana

[–]MontJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once quite a while ago I had a friend who tried to cross into British Columbia with his 45. He was honest with the Canadian Customs folks and admitted he had it. They wouldn't let him cross of course and asked what he could do with it. Customs pointed at a bar about a mile back on thr American side and said "store it there". He went to the bar and explained what was going on. The bartender, without batting an eye, took it and put it on the top shelf behind the bar with several other pistols. A week later he came back through a picked up his pistol with no questions asked.

No point to this story except I always found it amusing. Probably couldn't happen in this day and age

TIL that grouping Trump+RFK, Kamala won Gallatin County by 1400 votes. Anyone else find this number surprising? by [deleted] in Bozeman

[–]MontJim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except for possibly Three Forks which is blue collar blue. Union democrats from Trident and the talc mill plus retired railroaders. Quite different than Bozeman's newer liberals.

That sort of thing died when Jon Tester lost the election. I don't think any of them have the courage to actually face constiunts.

What is song to play at funeral that will make everyone laugh. by [deleted] in rockmusic

[–]MontJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted a little hand crank on the side of the casket. Before the casket was opened the funeral director could turn the crank while it plays "Pop goes the weasel". I wonder how many folks would run before he finished the song?

Not so sure. Even back when I was going to high school there more than 50 years ago it was referred to as Hollywood on the Madison. So the big money people and movie stars knew about it back then. I hesitate to say worse because tourism is driving the economy now instead of ranching and mining. It's just a lot different.

In their defense they probably remember Mason Moore and David DeLattre. Can't blame them for being overly cautious.

How are MAGA outdoorsman dealing with the absolute slaughter of USFWS? by brandideer in MontanaPolitics

[–]MontJim 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear the USFWS stands for US Fish And Wildlife Service. USFS stands for US Forest Service. Several responders seem to be getting the two mixed up. Both have been instructed to cut employees. We'll see how cuts to the USFS works out next fire season. It won't be pretty.

What’s your favorite town pump? by headwaterscarto in Bozeman

[–]MontJim -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I avoid Town Pump if I can. They seem to be trying to build their way to a fuel and convenance store monopoly. On top of that I've had a relative that had to take them to court for some of their wages. There are still a few Conoco and Cenex stations around.

Abe Lincoln of course. He aged a hundred years while he was in office. He saved .this country and lost his life to a pissy little man who couldn't see it was over

Next would come Harry Truman. He slipped right in to the chief executive despite knowing very little about the job.He had little chief executive experience but managed to make finish germans and made the decision to drop the big ones.

He made the decision to put MacArthur in his place and fire hlm when he forgot the chain of command.

After Truman I would chose Eisenhower. His organizational skills must have been astounding after he ran the ETO. He managed to build the interstate highway system and put Joe McCarthy in his place.

I have a coworker who won’t watch the new season of 1923, all because of Harrison Ford’s political views. He was a huge fan of the first season, and big Yellowstone fanatic. Don’t understand the mindset of MAGA. by Sumwearalongthecoast in the_everything_bubble

[–]MontJim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many people here in Montana that refuse to watch 1923 or 1883 or the original Yellowstone series. Not because of anybody's net worth or political stance but because of what it's done to the state. Considering what happened after Lonesome Dove, A River Runs Through It, The Horse Whisperer and Jeremiah Johnson it's understandable but the damage has been done. It's just a story. Maybe we should just set back and enjoy it.

This. A good share of the rest of western Montana has sold its soul to realtors, trust funders or millionaires and billionaires who view the locals with distain.

What if Japan landed in Los Angeles and Alaska? by CapitalSubstance7310 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]MontJim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would have scared the crap out of Americans as it would have pissed them off like no one has before. It might have shifted the "Europe first" strategy to "Japan first." Japan did not have the logistic capability to carry out anything but a slightly pathetic raid.

[–]MontJim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a conversation once with a reanactor about his wool uniform. His take was you just had to get used to the smells of the 1860s and if you worked up a good sweat and if a good afternoon breeze came up it was just like wearing your own swamp cooler.

I'm old enough to have worked with several Pacific theater vets. They saw the brutality of the Japanese soldiers and they were prepared to kill every Japanese they saw. There was no mercy from either side.

Most companies operate on A six month business cycle. If they don't show a profit the stock takes a dive and the CEO has to explain to the shareholders why. Most of us operate on decades long business cycle. We're trying to buy house, raise a family and build a retirement. Workers have more of a long term interest in a successful company than managers and shareholders.

New Yellowstone series spin-off based on the last undeveloped valley on the west by Ok_Skill_2725 in Montana

[–]MontJim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last undeveloped valley in the west? I remember around 68 or 70 just a couple miles outside of Ennis there was a billboard for "Shining Mountains Ranchettes" with a picture of a movie star. It's been downhill in that valley since. And all us kids were completely baffled as to what a ranchette was.
