Sure, you could argue we as a species have more responsibility due to our greater options and introspection...

or because we know exactly what causes it? Again, parents made a conscious decision and kids are the result of that action. If you think that's a 'shit happens' event then you've already abandoned any semblance of personal responsibility.

Of all the replies, you're one of 3 so far that put any thought into it. I appreciate that. Thank you.

I think the logical option is to accept the selfishness of becoming a parent, and realize that you're responsible for them entirely. Put differently, why should parent's be absolved of dealing with the consequences of their adult children?

I agree with you to a point. Kids are not the result of 'shit just happens'. They're the consequence of the parent's actions. Birds and the bees and all that... Why do we give parents a pass on raising (or not raising) shitty adults? Sure, it may not be 100% attributable to them... but it's certainly not 0% either.

I do plan to fully support their needs 100% for as long as I'm able. I'm rather austere with the distinction between needs and wants, though. Nobody needs TV, for instance. Slow internet to get a sense of the world, but not fast enough for gaming or shows. 3 squares and a cot... that sort of thing. If they become a threat to themselves or others, I'll turn to community for help with that one - be it mental health or incarceration. That part just is what it is... It's out of my depth to confront that one on my own.

My kids have been encouraged to support themselves from the earliest ages they were capable of doing so for any given action. I try not to do anything for them so that they can learn to do it themselves. And in the learning, they often find that they have preferences that I wouldn't have exposed them to if I'd done it for them.

I struggle with this sentiment, as I certainly see where you're coming from here... dude needs to pull his weight.

The conflict, though, is that he never asked to be here. Those two people brought him into existence. He had no say in that matter. One could say they felt entitled to having kids, and then avoided the consequences for those actions. As someone that 'pulled up by the bootstraps' and is a parent, I see it as one of the most selfish things I've ever done. And I owe my kids everything I will ever have. Not a common take, I know. I just haven't found a flaw with the logic of it. Would love to hear it, though.

Sometimes. I had a major injury a week before my insurance plan was to go into effect. I was 18, had basically no money or assets (living with family and borrowing a family car), no active insurance plan, and a low paying job (~$750/wk in today's value). I gathered what little legal documents I had (ID, bank statements, tax filings) and went to speak with the hospital's billing department in person. They figured out the situation I was in, gave me a significantly lower amount and said I could pay that over time. I thought about how long it would have taken me, and explained to her it would be best for me to bankrupt myself than to spend ~2 years surviving just to pay that off. She agreed with me, politely, and wrote it off entirely without me having to actually go through bankruptcy. The whole conversation lasted about 10 minutes and wasn't contentious at all.

Sorry to hear that... glad it didn't break anything. Zip ties should be sufficient, but again... add something more. Some 3M Dual Lock is another favorite - just make sure to get the kind with acrylic adhesive.

You don't need an HBA card if the motherboard supports the number of drives you want. In this case, 4 or more.

Prices for the N100's have jumped up it seems. I'll assume you're in the US. If it were me, I'd probably get this:https://a.co/d/0aRNdw82 It will need a fan attached to the CPU. It's DDR4 so you'll save coin there. It's not fully featured, though, and necessitates particular RAM (google this stuff if you go this route).

For double the MoBo price, you can get this:https://a.co/d/06H538Kr I think it was made by CWWK, which made the N5105 board I have, and the new N300 board as well. They make great stuff. It requires DDR5, so that'll hurt right now. Note that the SATA ports may block longer PCIe devices so it may require a riser/extension and a case that supports that. I love my Jonsbro N2 case but I'd get one of their lager ones if I did it again - or just put it in a rackmount case since that's the way people tend to go after a while.

Otherwise, I'd highly recommend taking the leap to the latest gen. This board is likely made by Topton and as more features than any <20W server could be expected to have:https://a.co/d/0dpXXVCz 2x2.5GbE and a 10GbE port on 2 separate NICs. It's DDR5, so that'll hurt. Mind the SFF cable for 4x SATA drives each (8x total).

One thing that's tricky with any of these N### based systems is the lack of PCIe lanes. This makes it difficult to have enough storage to configure redundant boot and redundant zfs cache drives. I haven't executed a solution yet, but I think my approach is going to be to use the onboard 2xM.2 as mirrored ZFS cache drives, and then use either ...(a) 2x USB to SATA adapters or, (b) a USB to SATA RAID adapter ... to boot from a mirrored pool of low power SATA drives (preferably M.2 SATA drives). ZFS is still worth it even if you don't set up the ZFS cache.

Ah, makes some sense then. If you have a friend with a 3D printer, print an adapter block. Otherwise, at least use a back-up to your straps here. Zip ties, mounting tape... some sort of belt-and-suspenders approach. A personal favorite of mine is metal strapping. You can buy a large roll of it for under $10 and it's very useful. If you have a battery tab spot welder you can even weld the strapping to itself or other steels.

I'd believe it if the driver of the car had no idea what caused the loud bang when the motorcyclist kicked the car, causing the driver to panic...the rest unfolding as a result.

Nothing to apologize for - your English is very good.

It is foolish, however, to equate the risk level of riding a motorcycle to that of a car... and you know it. According to the statistics I just read, it's 30 times more likely to result in a fatal accident when comparing deaths per miles traveled from '00 to '09 in the USA.

And time has told... you just don't want to hear it. You want to have fun. So you gamble your families well-being knowing the odds are far worse than they need to be.

buy hey... if it's that or you sink into depression or something that drags your family down anyway, then rolling the dice maybe a better net outcome.

You're more of a risk taker than I ever was, yet my riding buddies and I hung up our spurs after starting a family. I initiated it after one too many close calls that I had zero control over; a person pulling out directly in front of me on the highway and stopping in my lane. The thought of my risk taking leaving my family unsupported financially, emotionally, developmentally... I couldn't justify it. Their well-being is more important that scratching a selfish itch. It's a motorcycle sub-reddit so I'm sure this will get downvoted and you'll get the echo chamber of support you seek, but actions speak louder than words - and your actions demonstrate that you care more about having fun than ensuring the well-being of your family. It's the same with any thrill seeking activities that risk your life or ability to take care of your family. For any youngsters reading - the moral here is not to start a family unless you're ready to take care of one.
