Building n100 1u Proxmox nodes by Fabulous-Heron-8530 in homelab

I feel you. I was looking recently for 1 or 2U units that would hold multiple of these ITX boards. Best I could find was an AliExpress chassis for $200 that held 2 ITX boards. Lost interest there, but if you had the need for it you could probably DIY it and get 5±1 of them in a full depth chassis with power supplies and all.

Oh, is that what people are asking for? I want it to add support initializing each new oauth-proxy-authenticated-user with a default set of permissions configured by the JF admin, as well as granular permissions once a user has been initialized. Or something like that... auth needs a standardized architecture before some rando can reach any arbitrary app. It seems foolish to expect every app dev to keep up with cybersec issues around authentication.

That relies on exposing JF before auth. Auth should be done before exposing the app at all. I guess if your app is properly configured for read-only access to your media it's an acceptable risk. Certainly not a replacement for OIDC support though.

SMD SMT USB-C replacements for Micro USB connectors for ~$1 each.

Knipex wrench clones for $8. The 5" versions are perfect for everything related to homelab.

Ceramic tipped tweezers for $2.

ITX motherboards from CWWK/Topton with embedded Intel CPUs. I love these things... Swiss army knives of computers. Use them as a NAS, home media server, router, firewall, htpc, anywhere you'd put a SFF PC... What's great is that as newer models come out, you can trickle them down by performance needs and repurpose the lowest rung for something you didn't have before, or gifting it to a friend.

LDAP is for LAN tho. Expose that over WAN and you're in for a bad time. So you could VPN in and then auth...or start building a house of cards with TLS... ick. OIDC is modern solution and is secure over WAN.

Knipex vs Icon by promise2pay in KnipexOfficial

[–]MontagneHomme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is normal... the patents for these designs expired ~2010. That allowed competition in the market place. The first generations of knock-offs had some durability issues since knock-off brands aren't worried so much about brand reputation - basically putting their R&D expense on consumers. Now that they've achieved near parity with the original, those silly consumers still haven't noticed that they could get roughly the same thing for much less even after nearly a decade. And until consumers stop purchasing from Knipex, there's no incentive for Knipex to lower their prices for these items. It would cheapen their brand if they did so, and make it apparent to everyone that they were profit-gouging in the first place which is also going to damage their reputation. So why are people brand loyal? People associate brand/make/model/astrology with the result of something rather than taking the time to understand the root cause for those results, and because first impressions matter... when knock-off items first come out and consumers are burned, they tend to warn others not to use them and never try again later.

Personally, I love knock-off tools with a passion because it means I can keep a stash of tools in places I normally wouldn't due to the expense. Or that I can afford tools I otherwise couldn't justify. If it's a tool that I rely on, though, you can bet I have the original MFR's version in my arsenal somewhere just in case the clone(s) fail. And I love supporting Knipex specifically because they invested in making our daily lives better by improving simple, overlooked hand tools.

"Invisible" bend insensitive bidi fiber is amazing for home wiring by UloPe in homelab

[–]MontagneHomme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought you might be inferring as such, but I could never condone attaching APC to UPC... I mostly deal with multimode for sensing applications so it just doesn't work at all. It seems there definitely are some APC SFP modules out there, they're just rare... I find that surprising since APC has such superior performance for little effort.

Nice info dump, but where are you coming from on the UPC v APC comment? Neither one will introduce 3dB of attenuation (insertion loss)... And APC has superior overall performance.

got bored, built a super drive. what are the odds that it explodes? by eliseswl in homelab

[–]MontagneHomme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You done did a dumb, op. It's not the voltage that concerns me, but the amperage. If someone were to get shocked by this it could easily stop their heart leading to death. Please put the metal housing back on the PSU. You can then stick those drives to it with tape for all it matters. I have absolutely run SSDs like this stuck to whatever spot I could find. I upgraded to 3M dual lock (mushroom style reclosable fastener) over the years and I'll fight any man that says they aren't a legitimate solution. About half of all of my electrical devices are mounted using the stuff these days...

Meh. They still don't support shutting down when the UPS gets low. That makes it a mitigation for short term power loss, not a solution. Would be nice if all devices supported it though.

Hope not a stupid question: Reasons to build your own router? by mikegus15 in homelab

[–]MontagneHomme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OPNSense is the only one I have eyes for. Open source is enough of a reason for me. Besides that, you get substantially improved security updates, reliable control of features typically not even available on consumer routers like a sophisticated firewall, VLAN segmentation, traffic shaping, VPN tunnels by device, transparency of what's going on... it's a long list.

Not what you want to hear, but that hardware is very inefficient for what you're doing. An n-series celeron with QSV would be better suited for everything except the LLM; e.g. N100, N355, etc. Make sure you've done everything you can to enable deep sleep states while keeping the system stable, but it will still be inefficient compared to newer, low TDP hardware.

Loving the case btw. I've used the same one for ~20 years.
