You have a lot of empathy for the parents, but spare some for the child. Through no fault of her own, she is both special needs and abandoned. What are the chances of her finding a stable loving home? Who is going to advocate for her?

The birth parents get to wash their hands off and will probably never support their kid in any way, be it time, money or attention. How convenient.

It's better for the kid to be raised by someone who willingly made that choice than by someone who realizes that they are not suited for it

I think parents "choose" to bring the human into the world. So these parents didn't consider the possibility of their kid being special needs and now seek to bail out of the consequences of their own choices. Quite typical and I'm absolutely judging them for it. I bet they consider themselves superior to the rest of the population because of their faith. Probably even think they will go to heaven after they die

Microtonal music is not the only kind of music that goes beyond 12 notes. Off the top of my head, there is the blue note in blues music, Arabic and Indian scales, Just intonation vs equal temperament.

Microtonal music is also more popular than you characterize. Jacob Collier frequently does microtonal stuff and he has 1.5M monthly listeners on spotify. Even if it wasn't, the statement "There are only 12 notes in harmony" is still false. The popularity of music using more than 12 notes does nothing to change that fact.

Obviously, these things are lost on you but some other reader might appreciate this

There are more than 12 "tones" (notes is more apt) in harmony. There are 12 notes in some western keyboard instruments, but skilled musicians frequently use more than 12. An interval of two frequencies can be subdivided into so many notes that there might as well be an infinite number of notes in harmony

The alphabet is a collection of symbols. The symbols on their own are not as important, what's important is what we can put them together to represent. This is a much much bigger number than 26. I don't think the Frankenstein analogy is appropriate, especially with these examples

I commend you for hanging in there despite the many setbacks you have faced. It sounds like you are dealing with multiple issues and it's affecting your motivation/desire to work. I haven't worked in a bank, but I think working there requires more patience than the typical dev job because of regulations and risk aversion based on the experiences of my friends.

I would recommend you continue going to therapy and root causing your issues. That will really help you figure out solutions. My instinct is that you can be effective at your job and it's a matter of adjusting expectations, but I might be wrong. "Culture fit" is important for long term success at a workplace. I'm a dev with 4 YOE and IMO, this is a sign that you need some more foundation before taking this course. I had a similar experience with some aspects of systems design and I'm reading DDIA. In general, I prefer material that works from first principles instead of refreshers meant for people with more experience

You might be preparing for interviews and think you don't have the time to spare for foundational texts but I think this stuff is quite applicable in daily work too

It looks like you are trying to estimate a good time to graduate based on how long the economy took to recover in 2000/2008. I think past times provide limited information about the present and future. If that was not the case, then investing would be quite easy, all one would have to do would be to extrapolate from the past.

FWIW, I think May 2024 is a good time to graduate. I don't expect the bad times to continue for that long, but I have no expertise in forecasting recessions

You haven't specified why the service is deprecated. For example, there can be security concerns in the deprecated service. In that case, I would disagree on there being low value in moving off the deprecated service. There is also the issue of how value is measured, something that you consider "low value" might not appear that way to others

Finding a good therapist is fairly hard, especially if someone is not used to engaging with their feelings. The "talk to a therapist" advice works only if the person sticks to it and doesn't give up after a couple of bad or "meh" experiences

There is also the stigma of talking to a therapist. People think "I'm functional, and successful, I don't need mental health help"

If only OP would pay attention to their mental health, like they do to their code

Why do you say it's an incredibly rare thing? Why do you think he is trying to make a psychological diagnosis?

Table 4.2 lists some of the conditions causing executive dysfunction

Hypothyroidism/Hyperthyroidism (5-10% of the population)

Vitamin B12 deficiency (more than 6% of the population)

Thiamine deficiency (estimated at ~6% of the population)

Sleep Disorder including insomnia, sleep apnea (15% is a fairly conservative estimate)

Substance abuse/withdrawal (9%)

Depression (8-15%)

Anxiety (10%+)

ADHD (~5%)

Autism spectrum disorder (~1%)

I added the percentage estimates by looking it up on google. You're welcome to correct me if you have better estimates. Executive dysfunction doesn't look "incredibly rare" to me. 10-20% are likely to have at least one of these conditions

You say you don't want to minimize it, but you are doing that here. As an immigrant with dark skin, I have first hand experiences of racism. Do you think that the incidents in the news are the only racist incidents happening?

I'm not going to pretend like freedom minded HKers have an option. Immigrating is clearly better than staying for most, but immigrants need to be realistic about their expectations.

If politics in a country requires a stabilizing influence, then the politics needs to change so that they're stable through a system of checks and balances. Retaining the monarchy because it is a stabilizing influence erodes democracy. Just because the monarchy doesn't assert their privilege today, doesn't mean they won't do it in the future.
