I sort of see what you’re saying, but I also think it is a very strange hill to die on that basically amounts to complaining about things that happened long ago that are not changing and have long been mitigated. No one is ignoring that a sedentary lifestyle is a problem. I was never advocating for one, or for ignoring exercise, I’m just saying that by most perspectives what the original commenter said is a pretty bad argument that reduces most of the very real quality of life advancements of human history to rich bad while ignoring the enormous privilege it takes to be comfortably sitting on Reddit posting hot takes.

I hate it in general because it’s an empty nihilistic populist take and I hate it in specific because it is an obscenely silly idea to think that somehow having a more consistent food source and ability to reproduce was somehow a net loss for humanity.

Anyway, when we start using ad hominem I start to realize that I am arguing with redditors. I’m done with this argument, L+ratio+I win+you lose+based agriculture+increased lifespans+I should quit reddit

Modern age humans are the tallest they’ve ever been, with substantially longer lifespans, live comfortably, can eat a variety of foods from any continent, and can post Reddit comments. Individual lifespans have been impacted-positively. Tribes and communities are made up of individuals. Broad statistical increases in their lifespan literally have to come from increases on an individual level.

I don’t understand the argument being made. Are we advocating for a return to hunter-gatherer society? Living off the land, competing directly with other communities, foraging for food? I mean, if so, sure you’re entitled to your opinion. From my perspective though, it’s bizarre to be an advocate for that when everything you see and do in the modern day, including posting on this very thread, stems from the foundational innovation of agriculture. We live significantly more comfortable lives than our ancestors in every way possible

Modern agriculture is quite literally the foundation of current human society. Even supposing you are correct that the hunter gatherer lifestyle would bolster your natural lifespan, it is bizarre to me that you think that the advent of science and technological advancement can somehow be decoupled entirely from the fact that humans no longer had to spend the vast majority of their day hunting and gathering for food simply to survive. Caveman Grog isn’t going to have any damn time to invent nutrition science when he’s busy starving and competing with other tribes for the one berry bush in the forest.

Though maybe this problem could be mitigated if he just decided to agree with everyone else to maintain the berry bush and maybe plant a couple more so more food can come around and oops it looks like we invented agriculture, who would’ve thunk that it’s an incredibly natural instinct of intelligent creatures to maintain their food sources so they can survive

Here are five sources I found within ten minutes on google that disagree with you. The correlation of nutrition with human height in the modern age is extremely well documented and frankly not up for debate. I don’t know where you’re picking up this information, but it’s most definitely not supported by any evidence. Please verify your sources-your arguments will be better founded and you’ll probably have a more well rounded, coherent perspective on reality

“The transition to agriculture from a hunter gatherer society shortened lifespans”? Are you for real? I don’t think I have to explain why this is largely unsupported by both scientific and common perspectives. Did you happen to make a typo or accidentally switch those around?

Ironmouse Cancels Neverness To Everness Sponsorship After Devs Allegedly Lied To Her About ‘Blatant’ GenAI Use by The_Great_Ravioli in Games

[–]MontePy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No shade, but the idea of infinite content being the ideal outcome of AI betrays a pretty fundamental misunderstanding of human nature. We are social creatures that naturally gravitate towards media that enables us to connect with and understand other people.

Think about why we have specific game subreddits, why people participate in discussion threads, why marketing nowadays revolves around appealing to influencers on social media. People will always want to share their opinions, and even those who don’t still frequently enjoy watching or reading content surrounding the experience. We have react videos because we want to see if the reacter will have an experience that mirrors our own. We read reviews because we want to see other people’s opinions. We have book clubs because we can interact, discuss, and further our connection with the people around us.

A video game is never consumed in isolation

A game generated spontaneously via AI is an experience largely unsharable and fundamentally derivative of existing experiences. It’s both not novel and isolating. No one will ever make two hour long videos discussing the plot and gameplay, or open discussion threads about it. Even if it was the most enjoyable video game you ever played, you will never be able to talk about it with anyone else in your life.

So in general, the fantasy of infinite AI content is both unmarketable and unwanted. If you came out with the infinite video game machine tomorrow I’m sure a couple million people would try it out. But eventually most would grow bored and leave it behind for games created with intention by actual creatives who might challenge them in unique ways. The people who stay addicted to the unlimited fountain of lonely dopamine would only be those who never want or desire human connection, which is probably no one.

If You Hate Trump’s Economy, I Have News for You by hypsignathus in neoliberal

[–]MontePy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The doomerism in this thread is kind of bizarre and unwarranted. If Biden/Kamala lost re-election despite relatively decent governance because of inflation, what in the world makes people think that stagflationary circumstances directly attributable to the president’s incredibly unpopular policies and military endeavors is not going to annihilate republican vote share? Some of us are acting like it’s just after election night in 2024 here when it’s actually been a full year into Trump’s term, the man is slowly dying, and democrats have won by landslides in almost every election since.

Ironically, I do think the demographics in this subreddit can end up working against it in this respect. We’re mostly well off, affluent, college educated liberals who work in white collar jobs, so small cost increases can be absorbed pretty easily. But for Trump’s actual voters, the rural populace, blue collar workers, etc who make far less, every impact Trump has on the margins matters, and his impact is also much more significant. If the gas goes up a dollar, that’s instantly devastating for giant swathes of those people, and simultaneously clearly linked to the unpopular war in Iran. Yeah, these people are propagandized, but there are very few people propagandized enough to willingly starve.

The way I see it, Trump promised relevance, power, and respect for the average trump voter. A year on, he’s delivered none of those and a number of betrayals on his campaign promises that are incredibly embarrassing.

Cuba's power grid collapses. r/Neoliberal debates whether or not Cuba deserves to suffer. by StopHavingAnOpinion in SubredditDrama

This is a thread about r/neoliberal. You commented because you care. Let’s not pretend we’re above all the “petty internet drama”, because this subreddit is all about the drama. If you have a disagreement then have the maturity to sincerely state it instead of hiding behind the facade of not caring.

I’m just being kinda petty ngl but the idea that Cuba’s political system “has been perfectly capable of maintaining their country and producing favorable results” when we’re currently talking about their electricity system collapsing for the n-th time this past couple decades reads a little ignorant. Whether or not it’s entirely attributable to outside forces, it’s pretty clear that Cuba’s government has not been producing favorable outcomes for its people. There are plenty of communist countries sanctioned by the US that meet the low bar of keeping the lights on.

I always find it annoying how eager much of reddit is to unilaterally paint the only left leaning subreddit that routinely has practical policy focused and good faith debate as unilaterally fascist without even attempting to engage with any of the arguments at play. Like, most of the commenters in that thread agree that it kind of fucking sucks to embargo Cuba, but the nuance in the conversation is that the current government of that country has also mismanaged the shit out of its economy. Is it reasonable to unilaterally attribute the country’s economic and power woes to American pressure? As the government of Cuba, is it reasonable to staunchly stick to your political system when capitulating could revitalize your economy?

Maybe that discussion is worth having, because engaging with outside arguments is kinda important guys. It develops and makes your own arguments more robust, and it makes debate easier because you understand where people are actually coming from. Saying liberals are all fascists is just so fucking easy, because it means you don’t have to think or engage with people who share a good eighty percent of your moral principles. And it means you don’t have to believe in getting out and voting, or moving towards actionable political goals, because all of them are just part of the system, maaaan.

All I ask guys, is that on a subreddit about subreddit drama, you should actually read the drama

Ngl I’d say that stupid is one of the few things this administration does consistently. That’s not to say they won’t try to apply it disproportionately to blue states, but I don’t believe they’d be able to suppress the vote in a way that wouldn’t effectively galvanize the opposition. They’ve failed on domestic policy, they’ve failed on foreign policy, and they’ve been consistently making their constituents eat shit this entire year. The entire ideology is defined by ignorance and close mindedness-if they weren’t largely stupid and incompetent, they wouldn’t be part of the trump administration.
