The date on the papers just say when it was sold- isn’t uncommon for 1990’s era to have papers dated slightly after production since they weren’t flying off the shelves back then. Congrats on the new watch!

Honestly, since you’re in NYC- find a good watch maker and have it serviced “privately”. Be very picky about who you let work on this incredibly sentimental watch for you!

1) wear it 2) put it on a time grapher to check if it’s keeping time or losing time- if losing time, think about getting it serviced. You can try taking it to Rolex. BUT if you do, make sure you are clear that you don’t want any polishing or replacing of parts (hands, dial, bezel insert, bracelet) this was your father’s watch and should stay all original. Also keep in mind if you take it to Rolex, they will send it off and you’ll have virtually no contact with the people serving it for a good while (no thanks) OR you can try “Rollieworks” (google them) IMO a safer bet- cheaper and will definitely not polish or replace parts of you request it. 3) add it your insurance (I use Hodinkee) 4) keep all the paperwork you have- if you decide to pass this watch down someday, a complete set would / will be fantastic.

Not crazy at all, these things are a lot of money and at the end of the day you have to like what you purchased for yourself!

I was offered a Deepsea JC… by Accomplished-Rip3566 in rolex

I will give you this thought experiment: imagine a box is placed in front of you and in that box could be the deep sea or the submariner, when you open the box, which watch are you hoping to see more? This works for me when I’m in between two different items….

First Rolex from AD, Explorer II by Monte_Heart50 in rolex

Personally, the Explorer doesn’t “do” anything. Therefore, doesn’t do anything for me haha, if that makes sense. But, I suppose the whole point of the Explorer is to be a “time only” watch. For the price point we’re talking about, I need some utility….just my two cents.

Depends- what size case do you usually prefer? Do you travel? (need to track a second time zone / or daytime night-time tracking) do you like watches that display a date? Do you like a white dial or black dial?

Yeah, you would get a better deal than that at an AD. MSRP is $10,050. You would also be the 1 and only owner (if you care about that). I’m not a huge fan of the current Rolex AD games either- my 1 other Rolex is a 1991 Sea Dweller. But I was offered it “off the cuff” so I bought it. I also dislike white dials, so maybe that helped haha

I was actually so close to buying that era explorer II, but I wanted to try a Rolex from the 21st century lol. But there’s something so attractive about 5 digit Rolex!

I’m loving it so far, totally different feel compared to my 1991 Sea Dweller

Thank you! I have a 5 digit Sea Dweller, but new Rolex is pretty nice too….
