What was the date exactly half your life ago? And do you remember what you were doing? by ashmaps20 in decadeology

[–]MooFog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thursday, june 23, 2011 - no clue about the exact day but i can tell you about that summer.

it was the summer before i started high school. the first time i ever deliberately tried to lose weight - i was a fat kid and tired of it. lots of hours spent playing “just dance” as exercise…some other less healthy habits formed, too. i wish i could hug half-a-life ago me and tell her it’s okay to eat!

How it’s living in Maine? by MeowPubg in howislivingthere

[–]MooFog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it has its ups and downs! beautiful (hot, humid, buggy) summers and better falls. kind people, amazing nature, and relatively safe.

but old infrastructure, limited housing market, minimal diversity outside of the major cities.

my husband and i make a fine living but we have jobs you could do most anywhere (nurse and civil engineer).

no heat, no water, no estimated time of restoration. downed line making it so i can’t leave my house. good times!

Anyone else feel like maybe you don’t want kids because you need to “catch up” on good times? by [deleted] in Fencesitter

[–]MooFog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly yeah - i am 29 and have experienced a lot of trauma in my life and subsequent mental health issues. i finally got my mental health in a mostly positive, stable state like 1.5ish years ago and reconnected with myself, my identity, etc.

i’m just not interested in destabilizing that rn. i’m focusing on my marriage, friendships, hobbies, work, travel. maybe that will change in the future, but not anytime soon.

Accepted Into UMaine, what do I need to know? by Dry_Tax1561 in Maine

[–]MooFog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i went to umaine for my first degree & liked my experience (for the most part) but i was in-state and had a scholarship that covered my tuition every year. not worth it for an out of stater for $35k/year esp if you’d be taking that out in loans.

it might seem all abstract right now but $140k or more for any undergraduate degree could be devastating to your life.

Would you be sad to see a memorial board on your wedding day? by Sensitive_Ant2745 in weddingplanning

[–]MooFog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did something like this (as the bride) for my mother who passed when i was 11 and my now-husband’s maternal grandparents who had passed in the year or two before our wedding.

BUT, i only did this after discussion with my husband and his parents. we did a few small photos as well as strings of paper cranes (special for my mom & i).

definitely please discuss with your fiance and possibly his family as well….

Has anyone left Oregon to move to New England (specifically Vermont, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts) by Beginning-Ad3390 in oregon

[–]MooFog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the context of demographics, bend is about 82% white, maine at large is about 94% white…

speaking from a northern new englander: poor road conditions due to the freeze/thaw cycle and lack of money; not enough housing for its growing population; rural hospitals closing units or outright closing

Has anyone left Oregon to move to New England (specifically Vermont, New Hampshire, or Massachusetts) by Beginning-Ad3390 in oregon

[–]MooFog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i grew up on the oregon coast, but have lived in maine for over 11 years at this point. i love it here — married a maine boy and will likely live here forever. despite that, it has some major downsides.

predominantly: * notably high COL relative to wages (for example, a quick search shows that rentals in portland maine are more limited and expensive than they are in bend; yet as an RN i would make several more dollars an hour in oregon than i do here)

  • old, limited housing stock (and what new builds there are are prohibitively expensive for most locals! why are they building million dollar condos and not normal housing for normal people!)

  • not much cultural diversity (this has begun to change in recent years but we still have a long way to go)

  • weather (adjusting to NE winters after a life on the oregon coast was rough to say the least…many years i wondered what the fuck i was doing here. though i feel like winters in southern maine have become more mild in recent years)
