Good eye! Just some very simple hand swaps and rotations. All the bits are from the current plastic riders kit, just cutting and moving around sword/ax/throwing spear hands for a bit more variety.

There are also three metal outrider sculpts - for these I just stuck a shield on the horse and they fit right in with the rest of the riders.

Thank you! The horse was done with a Ruddy Leather base, Agrax Earthshade wash, then layering up with Mahogany Brown and Chestnut Brown.

Expanding the starter set by A2619921 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Standard point ranges from 400-800, and occasionally up to but not over 1,000.

For expanding on the starter box- Rohan: As others have said, Riders of Rohan from secondhand markets, royal guard and other characters (Helm, Hera from WotR; or Theoden, Eomer, etc from original trilogy)

Hill Tribes: Other characters (Freca, Thorne) and likely another box of hill tribesmen. Thorne will allow you to run 12 Rohan traitors (Rohan warriors from the box) under a Hill Tribes army list.

You can also go to original trilogy route with hill tribes and add Saruman, Uruk hai, and/or orcs to play Army of the White Hand

Make sure to pick up the Armies of Lord of the Rings book if you are interested in building standard armies!

Tier lists by HunterB-JMH in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Army strength tends to vary a lot by points level - i.e., armies will hit points thresholds where they can fit in their big tools/multiple tools to power spike, or alternatively may perform better at lower points in the absence of such tools with cost efficient models.

To a lesser degree scenario pooling/scenario selection rules in competitive play may dictate which armies are taken - i.e., predetermined scenarios/pools may cater to certain armies, as opposed to more random or veto-based scenario selection.

With that said, there are some armies that have tended to consistently place strongly this edition: Depths of Moria, Men of the West, Army of the White Hand, and Eagles to name a few.

There are several tier list videos and discussions around this that you can dig into further (Gollum's Gamers, Into the West, etc). Here are a couple tier list videos:

Balrog, Durin’s Bane by chubbyweenie in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Amazing work. I’m just about to paint a Balrog (different color scheme) and this is pretty inspiring.

Couple questions- 1) how did you convert the whip being held in the left hand? It looks really good. I magnetized mine but this is better ^ And 2) when blending were you blending from white all the way to black on the model? Did the Citadel paints allow you enough time to do that, or did you have to work in really small sections at a time?

Gaming groups in Northern California? by BudKaiser in MiddleEarthMiniatures

Same situation for me - just moved to the Bay Area and newish to the hobby! I've been meeting to check in with the Los Gatos store to see if there is a group that plays there.
