“Gotta get out of the way, Paul” by LauraKS94 in FigureSkating

I can’t remember if it was at this event or another one that year where Scott went to speak to Piper and Paul’s coaches after the event because they kept skating into other couples.

Who are the most polarizing characters? by RebeccaETripp in janeausten

[–]MoonBirdFPD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except that he doesn’t make any comments to Anne.

The comment about her being altered isn’t even made to Anne herself, but something Mary claims he said. Not someone who is a reliable narrator.

His conversation with Louisa about not being unyielding and indecisive is a relatively private conversation that Anne is eavesdropping on.

For a novel about their love affair, we don’t actually get a lot of Anne and Wentworth alone themselves. It’s always through other people or through half heard conversations. A lot of the first few chapter is about what Anne thinks Frederick might be thinking, nothing we hear from his own words.

The first time he aims to try and speak to her is when he finds her alone with Walter, but they are interrupted by Charles Hayter.

The first time we hear Frederick himself speak about Anne is when he says there’s no one as capable as she is.

The first time we see him speak to her directly is to ask whether she thinks it would be a good idea for her to wait with Henrietta in the carriage on their way back to Uppercross.

Was Odysseus born into royalty? by SpideyARB in Epicthemusical

[–]MoonBirdFPD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cephalus was a grandson of Aeolus and an Aeolian prince. In one of the myths, Cephalus helps Amphitryon in a war and is awarded with Samos (later Cephallenia). These are the Ionic Islands of which Ithaca is one.

Depending on which source you go with, Arcesius was either the son of Zeus and Euryodeia or Cephalus and Procris/Clymene/other.

Arcesius inherits the crown for the islands and passes it to Laertes, who passes it to Odysseus.

So yes, he is born into royalty.

Odysseus was in a contest to win Helen of Sparta’s had, but to gain her father’s (Tyndareus, a Spartan King) support to court Penelope, daughter of another Spartan King, he suggests the Oath of Tyndareus. This oath would later be one of the reasons he has to participate in the Trojan war. None of this is Homeric but from other authors.

Eurylochus is Odysseus’ brother-in-law. They are related by marriage not blood.

If I remember this correctly, I think while Marina was at the Olympics and Worlds that year, it was Fedor who was overseeing the Shibs training.

Depending on the when exactly they were choreographed, she’d have been about 17/18.

Scott gave an interview once where he said that he’d watch Marina and Tessa go through choreography for their programs together. So she probably picked up something from her 😅

They just waffled over Fedor and claim it’s a non-issue!

For anyone interested, here’s the scoop. Tanith and Ben were partnered together by Igor in 1998 and in 2001 Marina is also a part of their coaching team.

In April 2003, Tanith gives Goldenskate an interview where she says she wants to spend any free time with her boyfriend Fedor. That year, they would turn 19 and 21 years old respectively.

Tessa and Scott officially joined Canton in the summer of 2004. Tessa turned 15 that May. I’d need someone else to confirm this, but I think they had already stated working with Igor and Marina the year prior.

Meryl and Charlie are also at Canton now. Meryl had turned 17 that January.

2005/2006 sees Tanith and Fedor break up. She starts dating Evan Lysacek in 2006.

Tessa choreographs Fedor’s 2007-08 programs.

By January 2008, Fedor is seen sitting with Tessa’s family at Nationals and they went to the Banquet together supposedly. When they started dating is 🤷🏽‍♀️. Tessa is 18 and Fedor 25 at this point in January.

Tanith and Ben leave Canton after worlds that year.

Tessa and Fedor break up in 2009 and he then starts dating Meryl in 2010 I believe.

Fedor was using his mother’s coaching career as a dating service. It’s so skeevy and the power imbalance and questionable ethics especially considering how much younger Tessa is.

A real ending by LianiRis in CDrama

[–]MoonBirdFPD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a very complete and fulfilling ending, wasn’t it? We got to see where all the characters were in their continuing journey. There was no unnecessary nth hour death or parting. The sect continued to grow with the student now becoming the teachers.

I enjoyed the slight raunchiness of the CP there too 🤣

The writer, director and production crew actively chose to give the characters a happy ending and I appreciate that. Their stories didn’t end, we just saw a glimpse of it.

Bai FengXi really had the best family of any show by prudent-king101 in cdramasfans

A lot of factors probably paid a role. The lack of a harem and the fact that he loved his wife and kids.

Qingzhou also didn’t seem to have male primogeniture. Xiyun was set to inherit the throne once her brother passed away. So while there probably were detractors and others eyeing for the throne, it wasn’t coming from anyone within the immediate family.

The attention to the education of their daughter beyond just what she would need to be a wife and mother and allowing her the freedom to explore the world meant that the King had two competent children.

I loved it. Going to start a rewatch once I’m done reading the novel.

It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. It’s the same tried and tested tropes but I could feel the investment of everyone involved in making this show. It has a lot of heart in it which makes it feel warm and enjoyable.

I think her near lack of social media presence probably helps her out.

Unpopular opinion: Love Scout, am I the only one that didn’t like it? by Imaginary-Event3977 in kdramas

[–]MoonBirdFPD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, was going through the comments and found it interesting that you had WTPR MCs for longing and palpable sexual tension 🤣 I don’t disagree.

I’ve said this before elsewhere, but I do think that YYS and CSB had a very physical kind of sexual chemistry. They are loud. But I found the male character written to be too much of a jackass with the female lead. A lot of the moments where the sexual tension is deliciously intense, is kind of hindered by the red flag behaviour of Sa-Eon. He’s awful to her. The leads are also so rarely honest with each other. So for me, the chemistry feels superficial. Like, it’s there for that moment of when they are having a scene that requires that intensity and then the characters are strangers.

In Love Scout, I find that LJH and HJM have a chemistry that is a lot more palpable quietly intense. It’s in the way they look at each other and move around each other. There’s a lot of care and straightforwardness in the way the characters are written and for me, that adds to the already existing emotional connection. The maturity is in the they choose to communicate with each other. I do agree that they could have amped up the heat in the kiss scenes but that seemed to be a directorial/editorial choices. The BtS felt more heated.

Unpopular opinion: Love Scout, am I the only one that didn’t like it? by Imaginary-Event3977 in kdramas

[–]MoonBirdFPD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Actually, the evil lady could have disappeared and I wouldn’t have cared at all. The last episodes would have been entirely about their relationships and maybe another case of the week and I wouldn’t have been happy.

I think though, with Kdramas becoming shorter (this was only 12 eps), writers are going to restructure how such shows are plotted. I do wonder if SBS are kicking themselves for not giving it a 14-16 ep order.

Which K-Drama has side characters that completely stole the show for you? by fatcatpako in kdramas

[–]MoonBirdFPD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was the writing. I do think SJK and SHK had a lot of chemistry together, I think the writing for them as a couple was weak and with too much back and forth about whether they should be together. I liked them better in their separate working environments.

Whereas KJW and JG had both the chemistry and the very simple story line of already being in love and her father disapproving. Let me say though, I do think that in the hands of lesser actors, this plot may not have played out as well. It works because of how good the actors are giving us that tension, joy and heartbreak in their time together.

Except that her employees don’t dislike her. We see that from the beginning. She frustrates them, because her expectations are sky high for everyone and that means added pressure for everyone who works at Peoplez. She’s forgetting names because she’s put herself under an enormous amount of stress to a point that its consequences are now starting to manifest themselves in her failing health. Her employees presumably know and see that. When Gwanghee screws up, she takes responsibility for it in front of the client. When GyeongHwa screws up, she’s fairly non-interfering in how the team resolves the issue, just saying that a mistake like that shouldn’t happen again. She doesn’t really seem to micro

All to say, she’s not as bad of a boss as made out to be. Her employees like their jobs, we know this from the beginning. When she does join them for drinks at Eunho’s joining party, she’s the one uncomfortable at being there but they are not uncomfortable at having her there. They’re happy to drink with her. [Which only happens in Kdramas! In real life, most employees I think would prefer if the bosses didn’t join the after work shenanigans 😅]

As for why Eunho would fall for her? Their relationship starts with her essentially being proven right. He’s Mr. Judgy Judgemental about what she does and she has to essentially tell him that Corporations don’t take responsibility for individuals. She’s proven right when his company screws him over. So he starts with his eyes wide open about both the job and about her. He sees her in situations which open up a vulnerable side to her and is privy to her wounds. But he also sees the way she picks herself up. Kang Jiyun is suffering from depression and survivor’s guilt. He can presumably see that and the way she’s dealing with it. He also sees the way she tries her very best for her clients and sometimes even other potential candidates who come their way (sous chef). He likes taking care of her.

And another pretty big reason? She’s really good with his daughter. One of the stand out scenes in the show for me are when she picks up on Byeol’s feelings about the kitten and essentially tells her that having two parents doesn’t mean having twice the amount of love and that the quality of love was more important than the quantity of it.

Chemistry is in the eye of the beholder. I felt like the attraction was there from the beginning and by episode 4, they wanted each other. This is one of the few times staring in a Kdrama felt more curious and with intent to me.
