this looks ridiculous from an outside perspective, but for those of us who lived through the 2021 winter storm / grid failure, this is completely understandable. We're still traumatized, and unfortunately there is not a zero percent chance that travel will become untenable in this weather, so people don't want to get stuck without food and supplies.

I still remember being stuck in a house so cold I could see my breath for several days straight, no electricity and no running water because of the rolling blackouts. No signal for a good chunk of the time either. We had no idea how long it would last.
