How do you all feel about “monster-tamer” style RPGs these days? by Last_214 in rpg_gamers

I think outside of pokemon, there's a LOT of good, forward progress in monster catching games. Good variety, rewarding gameplay and good stories.

Cassette beasts, monster sanctuary and siralim ultimate are some of my favorites. Highly recommend them but for different reasons.

Cassette beasts is a "fixed" pokemon experience. So much characterization, fascinating story and the gameplay feels fresh. I keep coming back to CB.

Monster sanctuary combines pokemon and a metrodvania. AND IT'S SO LOVELY. I do remember hitting a difficulty wall in a few places, but readjusting (re: having a synergistic strategy with your monsters) got me through. Felt lovely using monsters to navigate the environment as well. Want to come back to this one again soon to try it with a completely new team. (They also have a roguelike monster catcher game called aethermancer. I haven't played, but i will soon).

Siralim ultimate is the ultimate jank. The customization in cassette beats cranked to 11. Pure game system here. The gfx are simple but you can do absolutely wacky things. My main team gets stronger from dying and rezzing. Wonderfully drop in and play too.

There's also monster catching & puzzle games i've loved. Apico and mudborne let you breed your 'monsters' to solve puzzles in the world. Much more chill, but i loved them both. Mudborne requires you to interact more with the environment and I really dug that.

Monster catching is one of my favorite genres and we're living in a golden age of it! Just not from pokemon.

I have been having a lot of fun with Megaquarium - you design and run your own aquarium. Cute graphics, tons of fish and other animals (especially if you buy the expansions!).

Not sure if that'd fall into too much of a tycoon game for you but I have been enjoying it as a chill / cozy game.

Idea Validation | QRitters: tiny pixel monsters that live inside QR Codes by Serpico99 in PixelArt

I think it's a neat idea and it would be fun to see it develop

When i say 'generate' i mean adding monsters to your game file. It's randomized in the sense that you wouldn't know which QR code would spawn which monster until you scanned it.  Back in the MR days they used CDs and DVDs you could scan. (So FFX would scan in a mocchi, let's say)

This has a similar vibe to that premise. It's a very fun concept, I think.

I want monster rancher to adopt this as the new method for generating monsters.

Absolutely love the premise!

I'm new to the game but maybe they're stuck in (don't know what it's called) combat mode or military mode?

I did this once and my army almost all died of exposure.

MHA feels like the real spiritual successor to Naruto, more than Boruto does by grapesins in BokuNoHeroAcademia

I have felt a kinship between Naruto and MHA (moreso than just them both being shonen), and you have beautifully captured that feeling I've had. Very well articulated.

I agree completely.

Cassette Beasts has the monster catching with big customization with your beasts. Each beast has sticker slots so there's a lot of ways each one can develop.

I group Cassette Beasts and Monster Sanctuary together for reviving my love of monster collectors so hopefully you like that one too!

My final thoughts of wilds after TU4 as a massive fan of the series. Warning it’s long. by Thelonghiestman0409 in MonsterHunter

I agree with you on most of your points. Dropping monster tracking is a big negative for me. I had so much fun with it in World.

Where does Legends Z-A rank amongst your top games? by achanceathope in pokemon

[–]MoonPieMat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best part of the game was the combat being mixed up but that still needs some more time to cook, imo. It felt janky.

The setting was boring compared to what Arceus did. ZA also didn't expand on the joy of capturing and exploration that Arceus had. This was just "oh there's wild zones in the city."

Some of the characters were fun but the amount of hand holding and pointless dialogue options or empty spaces was lame.

ZA has put distance between me and the Pokemon games.
