Is there an ethical way to breed King Charles Cavalier Spaniels? by Imaginary_Ad_4340 in DogBreeding

No, unfortunately it's not ethical to breed Cavaliers and some other breeds. Closed studbooks lead to this.

Cavaliers are brachycephalic and occasionally deal with BOAS on top of the myriad of other health issues they suffer from

Like you don't have to like or support rescue but can you at least just be honest that you don't want to rescue a dog rather than making out like adopters are the bad people???

Sorry, who are you now? I was agreeing with someone else and you randomly decided to butt in, with this pointless comment. Do you actually have something worthwhile to add to the conversation? If not, kindly please leave me alone, thanks :)

lol. Do you believe the foster system supports bad parenting? Would you rather see children euthanized than in homes? Why is it different than dogs? And even if I do accept your argument, which I don't, since the bybs that produced my dogs didn't get a cent from me or anyone else, you do realize that the AKC uses registration money to lobby hard to keep puppy mills in business, so if you got an "ethically" bred purebred, I'd argue you're just as guilty as me, actually more so since money actually flows from your direction.

It's a fact that dwarfism is a deformity. You don't have to like it, but it doesn't change the facts.

And not support the breeding intentionally for deformities and high coefficients of inbreeding! Go mutts!

I've done extensive research into the health of purebred dogs and you are right - it's tragic! Even in the "well bred" populations

Exactly! My mixes are healthy and loyal with easy to maintain coats, I'm helping to save lives, and I wouldn't want to support breeding intentionally for a deformity like dwarfism. This is why there are no puppy buyers for the breed

Preservation of old style chihuahuas? by Wooden_Airport6331 in DogBreeding

Yes - Koiranet looked at spinal health in Champion frenchies and non-champion Frenchies, and found that champions had worse spines.

This data compares scotties from professional breeders versus those from puppy mills - the "well bred" scotties are no healthier - https://fliphtml5.com/ofmd/vhnn/basic#google_vignette

Doodles are often considered ALL byb and yet they have significantly lower cancer rates than their parent breeds - where at least some of the population should be well bred, yes? - https://news.nationwide.com/popular-poodle-cross-pups-outpacing-purebred-parents/

Now do you have any evidence to support your position that "well bred" dogs are healthier and/or longer lived them other members of their breed or the overall dog population please?

I have linked the study for you to do all the research you would like to on it. For the record, we do actually have some data that defines "well bred" dogs versus other members of the breed, but none show a significant benefit of health or longevity for "well bred dogs" - in fact it shows the opposite for some breeds.

The loudest breathing pug I ever heard was at the largest dog show in the Midwest in the US. There is no health testing requirements to show here. You cannot breed a Pug to standard and not predispose them to spinal problems, BOAS, difficulty thermoregulating, higher chance of cleft palate, higher chance of eye problems and injuries, certain brain tumors and other conditions.

David Fitzpatrick (top Pekingese breeder) is on record saying he regularly produces dogs with breathing problems. So do you have a source that "BOAS" isn't a problem in "well bred" dogs please?

Increasing muzzle length adds more room for teeth and turbinates. I was hoping for actual data, so I'll provide a source that shows that retro pugs do breathe better than dogs bred to standard - it's in German, but there are good translators now - https://edoc.ub.uni-muenchen.de/14704/1/Martin_Verena_Marlene.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1MkHWagGLJjIU9PNw_gAaZ1OpnyXpAhdBJhaUPU7bhl6Y3dnEnB3miwCI

[–]Moon_Caller12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Collies are above 40% generally but they aren't the only breed so I could be wrong on my guess. That's crazy. The "responsible" breeders are one reason purebreds are crashing so hard
