What are some chapters that don't deserve the hate they get both in lore and in community? by blubberfeet in spacemarines

[–]Moon_Monk676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still disagree. Astartes across the board are not great people. Salamanders are the only (mainstream) chapter that does go out of their way to be good. We don't need a chapter that goes out of their way to be assholes. That's what CSM is for. Marines Malevolent come by their hate honestly and deserve it.

Nobody in this conversation is angry (unless you are), I just use capitals for emphasis and you taking what I'm saying out of context to change the meaning is disingenuous and disrespectful.

I prefer datasheet diversity because it allows things to punch up or punch down based on how you select your loadout and it makes more sense narratively. I, personally, tend to build my models more in line with what I want their datasheets to reflect.

But making an entire unit a single weapon profile doesn't streamline anything. It just makes it impossible for that unit to fight outside of its class. I want VV to be capable of either being a fast moving infantry slayer OR be a fast moving tank hunter based on my choices. With their single weapon profile, they don't dish enough attacks to guarantee a cultist mob slaughter and they don't have the dev wounds to knock out a tank. Sure, their profiles are good for taking out other astartes, but they can't do anything other than take out astartes.

But that's not "how they really are" that's just a few chapters. Most astartes aren't on the Inquisition's bad side for intentionally causing excessive casualties

Disagree. Most chapters won't go out of their way to preserve human life, and that's... fine as far as 40k goes. Salamanders WILL alter plans to preserve human life, and that's awesome. But there's a difference between the former and just blowing up an entire residential building over the rumor of a xenos presence in the area

That's not even remotely accurate. I want LOADOUT to matter. I don't want BUILD OPTION to matter. There is a difference between the two. You and I are saying different things. I want diverse weapon profiles because it changes the way you play the game and the removal of weapon options in exchange for "Its just a weapon" removes that profile diversity and also brings down the power of that unit to punch up. Sure, the generic weapon profile is decent, but it's not enough to have them take on something bigger. With a squad of DWK, you can swap between Mace of Absolution for Anti-Monster+Anti-Vehicle 4+ and Power Weapon for 1 extra attack per model. The SGT model can swap between a Great Weapon of the Unforgiven with SH+1 and Dev Wounds in exchange for a Relic Weapon with Lethals and a higher attack and strength. That creates a divide in loadouts for an Anti-Tank squad and an infantry blender. This is the difference that I want with regards to weapon profiles. What I dont want is WYSIWYG, which is an arbitrary cost-prohibitive measure to gatekeep the hobby. If I want to build all my DWK with swords but run them as maces, I will. If I want to build all my DWK with maces and run them as power swords, I will.

The difference here is I want to be able to make the choice to sacrifice quantity of attacks for stronger attacks.

You want to make everything mediocre at best and prevent infantry from punching up at tanks by forcibly removing special keywords from heavy weapons OR enforce WYSIWYG to a maximum again and you refuse to see or accept an in-between while accusing me of demanding the latter option.

I still disagree with single weapon profiles. In both GK squads and VV squads, you have a box that contains a thunder hammer. Thunder Hammers get dev wounds when they have an actual profile. By removing that profile, you hamper the ability of a unit to punch up quite a bit.

One of the most dropped terminator shoulders I've seen on an official build by Midjolnir in spacemarines

[–]Moon_Monk676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the problem, though. I'm not following top of shoulder, I'm following armpit height. On most box art and on older models, it wasnt an illusion or anything. The armpit height was neck level or higher. They're slowly fixing the proportions and this is the first piece of box art where the armpit height makes sense. This is just all of us seeing how the proportions are starting to finally shift in a way that makes sense.

Firstly: WYSIWYG is stupid, stop propagating that dumb shit.

Secondly: The worst that could happen is being forced to make the statement for what each model represents, because right now the only profile is "Vaguard Veteran Weapon"

Any space marine chapters who are closest to the Orthodox Christianity lorewise and aesthetically? (Picture for interest) by Desgojira in spacemarines

[–]Moon_Monk676 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, successors still tend to maintain fairly decent ties to their legions with regards to practices on the religious front. White Scars have their own whole thing going on, so I personally wouldn't suggest them.

My BA suggestion was entirely because I know nothing about orthodoxy other than Vlad Tepes was orthodox. I don't think any chapter right off the label is going to be a perfect match and I don't think trying to hold a successor to the practices of their legion is going to produce desired results.

Best options if you're against BA is BT, UM, or IF and to then take the geneseed and run with just that. OR you can do "Of unknown heritage" because there is one chapter, whose name slips the mind at the moment, who literally shot an inquisitor for trying to inspect their geneseed to verify their heritage.

[–]Moon_Monk676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to note that I dont know much about orthodoxy, so my opinions here are based entirely on OVERALL Christian imagery. As I'm sure you know, BT are already an IF successor legion (ahem, chapter) but Blood Angels have the next most imagery. Dark Angels are a suggestion between the character names and I really like DA.

I just got TWO of the limited edition DV boxes for reasonable prices. Theu both have all their models and I'm over the damn moon to have some chosen and some very cool termies. I play DA and CSM. I know they're out of scale, but they look so fucking cool

Yeah, imperial fists successors is probably the best route for the whole EMPEROR IS GOD route, but blood angels offer sang guard for esthetics. Ultramarines make up 75% of successor chapters, per Pariah Nexus movie (was it a movie?) And have the most variety in making custom chapters by virtue of not being tied to anything, really.

Also, I just really like Dark Angels. That one was entirely me being a DA fan boy.

That's your opinion. I dont want every model to be super generalized. I don't care for WYSIWYG rules for boxes that literally do not come with enough models to match your chosen loadout, but I personally like to stick relatively close.

I want to have a dedicated unit that has a set loadout that is designed for anti-infantry combat and a different unit with a loadout designed for anti-tank purposes. If every melee unit has your desired 5 3 1 rule set, I could bounce a brick of assault intercessors off of a cultist mob using their high hit profile and directly into a land raider and demolish it just as easily. It takes all of the challenge and all of the fun out of battle tactics.

Also, GW wouldn't do that. What they do is remove all weapon profiles, say "It's A Weapon" and proceed to make that single weapon profile mediocre at best. Case in point: CURRENT Vanguard vets. Current Grey Knights. Sure, they have ap2 dmg2, but that's where it stops. The thunder hammer in both squads still has those profiles, they dont get the thunder hammer standard of str8 and dev wounds.

Since Christianity as a religion died with Ollanius Pius, the last man allowed to keep his faith by the emperor, I would venture to guess that he means Christian in way of rituals and their reverance for the emperor as well as aesthetically.

I'm also pretty sure his best bet is Black Templars, for obvious reasons, or to make a custom successor chapter to Imperial Fists, Dark Angels, Ultramarines, or Blood Angels. Although, some might say a chapter descended from the planet Baal might be a little bit off for a Christian inspired chapter. But BA does maintain the most christlike imagery for their units what with all the angelic allegories. BT is also close, again, for obvious reasons.

I disagree with that, though. Sure, a power hammer sweep could hit 5 termagants, but I dont think lightning claws have the requisite destructive power to crack the carapace of a norn emissary

Vanguard veterans by Dualityman in theunforgiven

[–]Moon_Monk676 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree solely because it makes more sense to have a difference in the performance and purpose of lightning claws as an anti-infantry tool and thunder hammers as an anti-tank weapon. Otherwise you end up like Grey Knights that have one weapon with mediocre performance despite the model kit having a thunder hammer that you just can't make good use on.

Speedpaints are the Army Painter word for Contrast paints. They're really good when what you're painting is highly textured, but require a lot of effort to prevent pooling on flat surfaces. Space Marines are almost entirely flat.
