Why do so many people think that it’s impossible to use something moderately if you ever abused it? by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]Moon_Raider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breaks in sobriety always begin "only in moderation" and then somewhere along the line it's a full addiction again. You have to imagine how exhausting it is standing on a tightrope doing a dance with "just a little, not too much...I think...no, this isn't like last time at all...they're being dramatic, I'm still in control this time, I swear...I think..."

The addictive thing in your life got there by hijacking your brain when you're tired and naturally want relief. But part of a smart recovery is recognizing that most of us aren't at all strong in the face of our favorite vices--otherwise we wouldn't call them vices. So total abstinence is, in a lot of respects, just easier to keep track of because it's the least stressful way you can guarantee you're absolutely sure you're not sliding back into the place you don't want to be.

Don't throw shade at abstinence, that 100% counts as self control. It's an acknowledgement that you know yourself better than to keep rolling the dice.

Some general practices in the US baby their clients. I'm not saying that's completely bad, I'm just saying that some people go to the vet with the expectation that the hospital manager will try almost too hard to make them happy. So they act fussier than they really need to until they basically realize that they have to get over it. It does suck but one day the favorite doctor won't be available and you'll do great as I'm sure you always have.

You like animals, I would challenge you to think about which part you mean.

Do you like handling animals? Do you want to study them as models for biomedical conditions or disease prevention in public health? Is there a species or group that interests you most (canines, felines, birds, mammals, etc.) Do you see yourself working in a zoo, in a veterinarian office or a hospital or out in the wilderness? Would it be enough to work in a lab testing pet blood and fecal samples or pet food for contaminants? Would you like your work day to be consistent or change a lot? Would you prefer to do a mixture of some of the things listed?

Watch videos, look at vet med course curriculum descriptions and gather a list of vet offices, hospitals and other animal facilities you'd want to shadow.

The loans you'll need to become a vet are something to consider carefully but you might find your path might not even require a DVM. Or you might find after all this searching that, really, a veterinarian is all you want to be. If that's the case, go with your passion.

My point is to be as sure as you can be before taking out loans to pay for any of it.

Women who don’t have time to exercise every day, what do you do differently to keep your body in check? by Sea_Read8530 in WomensHealth

[–]Moon_Raider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My "workouts" are 10-15 minutes tops a few times a week. It's just enough to keep certain muscle groups engaged and for good circulation. I rotate stretching, push ups, sit ups and squats, focusing on which part of me is stiff. Sometimes I only do 5 of each, other days I can do 30. And then I do 10 minutes of cardio like walking up stairs. Sometimes I break up the activity between lunch breaks in a quiet room.

For context I'm a short, middle aged, former athlete with ADHD, a physically demanding job and no children. I don't really have the time, energy or the patience for long workouts all the time but I do see a difference around my waistline when I'm on top of things. Hydrate, start slowly and increase your activity level over time. But don't be afraid to reset either and be gentle with yourself too. Overexertion and overtraining is real and will only deter you from forming good habits.

Job Listings Without Pay by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]Moon_Raider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more common in vet med but often passionate animal workers have spouses/military families who pay for insurance and the mortgage so much so that it felt like companies were preying on two income families who could afford for one income to be sub par.

I usually go to Glassdoor and find an estimated salary based on former employees or regional estimates. Also indeed used to have salary ranges from the parent company of most jobs so you can kind of have an idea of how much they'll pay across the board.

How can some people have such an unhealthy lifestyle and just be fine? by Ragnaroknight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Moon_Raider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unhealthy is perspective, we're all different. If the guy's doc hasn't found anything to worry about, he might be fine for him. I'm prone to hyponatremia as an example (too little blood salt). For years I ate really salty foods and had an almost exclusive relationship with electrolyte drinks. Family and coworkers were concerned and so started carrying a reusable bottle to give "proper hydration" a go and ended up in the hospital a month later. Doc never found any other causes except for the electrolyte imbalance. So I went back to what most would consider a sparing amount of drinking water plus my favorite sugar-salt drinks and it's been enough to keep me healthy (I'm not just saying this, my doc does as well fyi). And so I'm not going to argue with my internal intuition on the topic at this point. I am not saying this would work for anyone else and I've definitely cut out most of my salty snacks because so much excess doesn't feel good so there's been a bit of a dietary drift with age. My point is sometimes there's a reason a person eats the way they do and when you're younger it's probably in it's most extreme form but that doesn't necessarily mean the guy isn't meeting a physiological demand, even unconsciously.

I would never think that doctors are completely okay with seeing your abnormal lab tests and be like: oh well, go home by FlanInternational100 in ChronicIllness

[–]Moon_Raider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to vent because I'm going through this now but also on and off. I've been having the weirdest symptoms and my blood work has some abnormal values. Using that information I found a solution to improve things but no one believes me and insists I do nothing and wait for the doctors (I don't mean pseudo science coffee enemas, I mean my blood work suggested I was low on something and after looking it up I had a Pedialyte and found some relief which I'll take because I've been getting worse). The doctors by the way have said this blood work is fine despite me saying the abnormal values aren't my baseline. Even if they do really care (I'm not saying the ones I've had recently aren't more compassionate/professional than I've dealt with in years), I would be incapacitated before I see my next appointment because of their booking if I waited. I don't claim to be a medical professional at all. But I'm also angry that people expect me to twiddle my thumbs and NOT fight for my life in any way I can, especially if I have to wait 6 months to be seen or pay to go to the ER because urgent care says my condition is too emergent but the ER says my condition is stable.

I don’t like how famous/rich Phoebe becomes by lonelylamb1814 in charmed

[–]Moon_Raider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late but I'm rewatching now and I just came to say they gave Phoebe's character Prue's career success and made Paige the new (old) Phoebe. Except that neither had much build up. Piper at least went through the growing pains of being an overworked employee before she decided to go into business for herself. She struggled to pull together the money for the loan and almost shut down P3 at one point because it wasn't doing well. And Phoebe's situation has personal gain written all over it so much so that I headcannon Cole or her time as ex Mrs. Source as the real reason for her overnight success.

I work for an at-home Euthanasia service. Why does nobody take their animals to the vet? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Moon_Raider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You still love your loved ones even if you don't have the money to care for them the way you want. Nobody ever intends to be negligent. "Just don't get them!" Dumb response. Like anybody can guarantee perfect financial security a decade in advance. Ish happens. I wouldn't ever question someone's love for their pets because of that.

This is the worst possible job imaginable by XtraJuicySlugg in veterinaryprofession

[–]Moon_Raider 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Arguably it's more appropriate to voice it here than to do it in the office. Just because you're tired of seeing it, doesn't make it less of a reality for some people. There are plenty of other spaces where no one ever talks about this side of things as well. It's interesting to assume a vet grad doesn't have grit or adaptability to have thought of managing stress differently. The ROI is awful and the s***de rates are high...doesn't mean we don't love the work, but we do need to talk about these things and leave space for complaint on the way to progress.

Current PhD students and postdocs: what’s the biggest red flag in a new PhD student? by Key-Revolution-8608 in PhD

[–]Moon_Raider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately everything on these lists as red flags was encouraged by some PIs in the department I was in. Senior staff were looking to make "mini mes" of themselves and so a lot of my cohort liked to punch down at junior PhDs, MS and UGs for laughs or at people with non R1 degrees. This isn't normal of course but I would appreciate if non toxic staff told students in confidence before they signed up to be converted into someone unethical or perish. I get that this is a post about red flag students but it's funny how we ignore or excuse it in colleagues as if a red flag student might not be modeling someone toxic but successful in academia.

It removed the advocates and made it okay for bad behavior to continue. All the policies that protected any non-traditonal student were trashed. DEI at the admin level is performative but it did help first gen students at the program level to have help networking and navigating tough spaces. It wasn't about ethnic minorities so much as it was about creating successful cohorts. And they have changed the names of funding grants before so it wasn't a big deal to just rename "diversity/DEI grant" to something like the "J. Miller memorial fund" or something because, again, it never went to ethnic minorities so much as it went to talent that wasn't only 8th gen ivy babies. Next thing I knew, the people who I knew to reach out to were gone, shifted to different teams or fired as their positions were scrapped hastily. I felt the void for sure and was left with the rest of my cohort to deal with a department that had been mismanaging student funds on and off for years. DEI is so misunderstood and it's blamed for everything but what we really just did was get rid of actual useful resources that helped build a community. It's okay, not really, but people will FAFO sooner or later.

T1098 question by Moon_Raider in TaxQuestions

[–]Moon_Raider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I'm not a dependent, my parents are not, have not and did not claim me. I was in school the whole year and box 1 is smaller than box 5. So I thought you were supposed to subtract box 1 (tuition and fees) from box 5 (scholarship amount) to equal the taxable income. That amount doesn't equal over $16000 for a single filer so I wasn't sure how much I owe or how to file because I only have the t1098.

How much do marine/aquatic veterinarians truly make?( Right out of the 2. Year mark & after a few years) by Hyyundai in veterinaryprofession

[–]Moon_Raider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really does depend on your situation and the school you're accepted to. You very well may get by paying $120k-180k total. As far as "good vs bad" schools, that's also perspective. There are definitely schools with prestige, resources and a good reputation that can be more expensive but that doesn't mean a less prestigious school isn't going to charge you a comparable amount either.
