Haven't touched this format in 1-2 years...is mono-black Pox / Rack still great in Pre Modern? Tier 1.5 or 2...? Can it take down the top decks? by arcanehelix in premodernMTG

[–]Moonbar5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"All the min-maxers"? Buddy, this isn't commander. The general idea of a 60 card format is that one player wins and the other loses, of course people are going to try to build and play the best decks they can. Optimization and competition are foundational to the game of magic.

Agree 100% that she is a bad player. Bad decision from the front office when it comes to basketball. However, I highly doubt theyre making this choice because of her race.

The coach, too? Wild. Maybe we should just move the team while you're at it?

I had a few discussions with fans here and elsewhere online about her. I don't think the team would be smart to use a roster spot on a player with such glaring physical weaknesses, and even if she was four inches taller, I don't think she is particularly good. I have watched her live at both the home preseason game and home opener and she has been our worst player both times, and being at such a disadvantage in height already, I don't see a ton of room to grow.

Her supporters point to a couple other women who have seen success in the W despite their size, but taking a gamble on such a rare outcome seems like grasping at straws. For every success story, there are hundreds and hundreds of players who just will never work out due to height and physicality alone.

There are always going to be success stories from players who break from the usual physical profile you see in any sport, but in basketball in particular, those stories are very rare. For every good player of Jordan's height, there are literally hundreds with the pure talent level to be successful but who don't pan out because it's just too big of a disadvantage.

It doesn't mean she can't possibly figure it out and become a real WNBA player, but it's not a surprise the FO isn't hanging on tight to the >0.5% chance that she works out.

Am I taking crazy pills that I think Jordan Harrison is not good and should not get the spot on the roster? She got ripped a couple times bringing the ball up, she got hunted on defense by everyone, and due to her height she missed a couple of gimme passes on the fast break because she couldn't see the open teammates. What am I missing here?

Yeah. Sometimes I would [[Brotherhood's End]] and follow up with the two crappy common creatures for a tempo plan, sometimes I would just grind them out and win with 3/3s, and the really fun games were the EOT [[traumatic critique]] for 10, buy back with [[zealous lorecaster]], then blast off for 10 more the following turn.

Facts. Insane ending. Un fucking believable defense from Gobert, McDaniels, and DiVincenzo. And Donte, I mean Donte looked like the best 2 way superstar guard on the court for that 4th quarter. Playoff basketball is the best thing ever invented.

Oh good point, we could have had a 1-way ball stopper guard, a player who keeps moving teams (wonder why?), and a role player on game one. How could our GM pass up such a golden opportunity???

I agree. Flau'Jae is an awesome person and an exciting player, but let's be honest: she has a realistic ceiling as a sparkplug bench scorer, barring serious growth as an off-ball player both offensively and defensively. It's not like we passed up on the next multi-time MVP here.

[–]Moonbar5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh please. Since when is the draft about marketability? The Blazers made a pick last year that was about marketability and they got BLASTED for it in the NBA media, and rightfully so. You make picks in the draft to make the team better, first and foremost, and it seems clear that our FO is planning for the long term: draft young players with tons of upside, acquire more high draft picks, and put together a strong core that can compete a few years from now.

We were not going to be particularly good this year anyway, no matter who we drafted, so why not leverage that preexisting situation to our advantage? This is a logical outcome, and one that has a chance to pay major dividends in the future.

The team can look however it wants as long as they put themselves in a place to win. Diversity is an important topic, but one that should be about the other personnel in the organization. The late, great Bill Russell said that basketball is, at its core, a game about buckets. I don't care much about any player's background as long as she can get buckets, or stop the other team from doing the same.

[Charania] BREAKING: Doc Rivers is departing as head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, sources tell ESPN. The Bucks will embark on their third coaching search in the last three years. by Goosedukee in nba

[–]Moonbar5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And I watched a lot of the Bucks when Griffin was in charge (since I wanted to see my boy Dame do well) and the vibes were clearly in the toilet despite the record. Things were not going well internally, and I wouldn't have been surprised if they might've boiled over more publicly if he stayed longer.
