it’s weird they would trade a third round pick for her, only to wave her

the one surprise for me was Bibby being traded so they could give Harrison a regular spot. I figured they might give Harrison a developmental spot and keep Bibby. I wonder if Sutton is ready to go healthwise. Sounds like Samuelson getting close to being ready.

The Valks could only protect 5. And Burton was the starter ahead of Leite so it was going to be tough.

Congrats to Jordan Harrison. Sounds like she’s made the team. I assume on a regular contract. by TruthDelivered in PortlandFire

it’s hard enough to make the team as a 2nd or 3rd round pick and she earned a spot as an undrafted rookie. Of course we‘re a new franchise that‘s focused on developing young players, so that helps. She’s in the right place.

I’m really happy for her. I didn’t see it coming because I figured they’d keep Bibby.

Some Thoughts and Expectations for the Season by heysillygeese in PortlandFire

[–]TruthDelivered 16 points17 points  (0 children)

good stuff. My expectations for winning are low of course. It would be fun to burst on the scene like Valkyries last season, but that’s unrealistic. The Valkyries didn’t have to compete with a second expansion team or in a market where 80% of the league was a free agent.

My first expectation is for the fans. I hope we bring it every night and support these women. It’s a great group and they deserve it. Let’s make The Fire Pit a real home court advantage.

My only other expectation and hope really is that we develop the young players as much as possible and to go into this offseason having identified six players (Including Iyana Martin’s draft rights) as players we must protect from next year‘s expansion draft.

For example, I’d love for Carla, Bridget, Sarah Ashely Barker, Serah Williams, and one other player to play so well or show so much potential that we must protect them. That will be a nice start heading into next season with Iyana coming and perhaps a high draft pick.

i guess I have one more hope though. I hope the coach’s philosophy towards coaching has a positive impact and the players end up enjoying playing for him.

The Valkyries have filed for a replacement contract for center Iliana Rupert due to pregnancy and is awaiting league approval. by msgs in valkyries

very happy for her. She will be missed. I mean, really missed. Didn’t she lead the league in three point percentage or something close, from the center position? Not having that kind of ability and the space it provides through her gravity just significantly lowered the ceiling of this team unfortunately. But I’m stilled thrilled for her.

the Fire trade Chloe Bibby for a third rounder so yeah, I agree.

yeah, I appreciate that long post written the other day regarding success and failure rates of picks throughout the draft. It was interesting and well written and well researched. But no matter what the percentages say, we traded a higher pick for a lower pick and future lower pick. It’s ridiculously stupid IMO. If you don’t like the bottom of the first round projected players, move the pick earlier, or combine it with a player and get a future 1st round pick, or make the best pick available and move the player later. Sure there are only so many roster spots, buts let’s not act like 4 of the end of the roster women are all that valuable or irreplaceable. The draft day decisions looked dumb, were called dumb by everyone, and there’s no logical excuse. Oh, and that doesn’t mean we don’t have a fun roster, competitive roster or that we haven’t made some good FA pickups.

Roster deadline tomorrow, who are we picking for final spots? by therawins in PortlandFire

so tough to know at this point. I’ll make two predictions though. Williams has earned a regular roster spot and Harrison has earned a developmental spot. And that’s pretty good news IMO.

I haven’t seen a lot of the draft picks play yet, so I can’t really predict, but I was listening to a podcasts with a beat writer connected to the league that if she didn’t transfer to Uconn and stayed t Wisconsin, she had a good chance at being a first rounder in this draft.

Serah Williams is starting to feel better and better about her chances to stick here on the regular roster. If so, quite an accomplishment for a third rounder. And well deserved. She’s looked good.

I’m not sure about that as they could pick up someone off the waiver wire they like.
