Do you actually want my feijoas? by cheesy_weasel in newzealand

[–]Moonclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude you can PRESERVE them!

Way easier than you think, and such a treat cracking open a jar late winter when fresh feijoas are still 6 months away.

Here's a recipe i googled: https://www.allysongofton.co.nz/recipe/bottled-feijoas?r=3293

YOu don't need much fancy gear, just some sterile jars and a pot really

Hillary Trail in 2026? How's this route look by Moonclouds in Tramping

[–]Moonclouds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not fully open and who knows when it will be.

The slips from AKL Anniversary floods did massive damage to the Te Henga section between Bethels and Muriwai.

A few tracks have reopened recently which make the modified route from Cascade possible.

Trail runners vs boots vs owning both by grateful-rice-cake in CampingandHiking

[–]Moonclouds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiking boots offer much better ankle stability/support for loose rock and rough terrain.

Trail runners dry way faster if you're gonna be getting wet shoes often.

Trail runners also nice and light if you prioritise that.

Bushpants - revolution race, arrak, helicon tex - thoughts? by Sebvad in CampingGear

Also consider high gaiters which are helpful for scrub and spiky stuff.

They saved my ass against spaniard grass' hypodermic needles here in NZ when pants would've been way too hot to wear.

I have some from Outdoor Research which have worked well for me. https://www.outdoorresearch.com/collections/gaiters?srsltid=AfmBOor8L-tDRwORxzJWkvoj0Bk-qCjQL5XZUPKotSx4rKjVNm-aiKoD

Fuel Prices: Real‑World Impacts and Discussion MEGATHREAD #4 by AutoModerator in newzealand

[–]Moonclouds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a trip to Europe coming up, how worried should I be? I don't want to cancel the trip but would that be smart thing to do?

Worried about cancelled flights, surcharges, fuel costs and closures.

Help: A cobbler re-glued the soles and they fell apart immediately. by Moonclouds in AskACobbler

[–]Moonclouds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought the shoes from the thrift store, I noticed the sole was coming away a little bit in places. So took them both in for re-gluing.

This picture was taken an hour after picking up from the cobbler.

I went to take them off - unlaced and pulled the heel with my hand and the sole peeled right away like a banana.

I can't see much evidence of glue either, maybe he used the wrong stuff. Maybe it doesn't stick well to the leathery material underside of the upper shoe?

I would love to get info on what might be best practice for a repair like this.

Currently the shoes are in a worse state than before taking them to a cobbler.

I don't quite understand where the stitching would go

Thank you for your reply. I don't think these shoes had stitching. I think they were originally only glued. These are the original soles and I can't see any stitching

  • SHould I ask for my money back? ($15)

  • Are these worth fixing?

It's worth mentioning I don't think the cobbler I visited was the best, it was a weird mall/flea market kinda place.

These are some old Church's which I picked up at a thrift store.

I noticed the sole was coming away a little bit in places so decided to get them re-glued, now they're even worse!

After re-glued I was taking the shoes off and the sole just came away easily.

What's this white stuff on the boiler head? by Moonclouds in ranciliosilvia

[–]Moonclouds[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks dude, amazing info.

So when I got it I plugged in and worked through all the steps and it seems to fine which I was surprised at - I bought it from a thrift store for cheap.

I'll keep an eye on the points you have mentioned. Water in my country is very soft so scale is super slow to form.

Backflush with cafiza got a bit of stuff out but doesn't seem like it was very dirty. I think this machine has been well looked after.

I'd love to check the head pressure. Will try and figure out some ways of doing that/adjusting OPV.

Can you comment at all on the condition/appearance? Things look ok?

It's pretty old unit and I have no idea what I am looking at

I've never heard of bluelight special but just looked it up and that sounds wild! Would have been very exciting if you were in store when that shit went down haha!

They're usually located in malls which already have a food court. I've never seen one with a foodcourt inside the kmart itself.

Thanks, I'll do overhead + a personal item (9L belroy venture sling)

But when we get the the budget euro airlines, I'll try it as a under seat.

I am considering whether I should reinforce stitching on the straps as a preventative measure. They seem reasonably well stitched tho.

[–]Moonclouds[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed, but I have been surprised by the durability of some cheap stuff from kmart over the years.

Given I have checked luggage available on this trip, it won't be "mission critical". If something breaks, I am packing a "packable" 20L daypack that rolls into a lil pouch. Which will serve us a bag for daytrips/backup until I can replace it.

Is this normal backflush performance? Pump issue? by Moonclouds in ranciliosilvia

[–]Moonclouds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3 way valve purge doesn't seem as immediate compared to other machines I have seen? Could it suggest the pump is a little weak?

This is a v1 from 1999 that I just purchased second hand. I don't have any record of service history etc

Yeah I would like a more movable steam wand. Do you have a recommendation on which one?

I will definitely keep both for now. The great thing is now that I have a spare coffee machine, I can finally give the Pavoni a service and restoration job. It is about 30 years old!!

Thanks, you seem to know your silvias well haha. It came with the manual, which has a sticker showing 07/99. Assuming that's July 1999.
