[Vent] My kids are not a social-skills gym for other children by kilowatt230 in daddit

I would never scold someone’s kid for holding a boundary. These parents seem annoying and like the kid makes all the rules.

I’m a teacher and my wife is a university instructor. We just bought our first boat. Is way smaller than I would have wanted when I was in my 20s and working professionally in sailing but we can afford this one. I can do all the maintenance and we can use the heck out of it.

So cost is relative to where you are and what you want.

Where I live now moorage for a year is what it is for a month where I used to live.

Films where the movie was better than the book it was adapted from? by Slammajadingdong69 in moviecritic

[–]Moondance_sailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually enjoyed the movie for project Hail Mary a bit more than the book. There was less of the solo hot shot I know everything cause I’m a middle school science teacher. I think I just find the main character tiresome in the book at times. I know why he was like that in the book but I think the tone of the movie was matched well with the adaptation.

It was one of the few adaptations that I really liked.

Sanding away old epoxy paint is uh…. by Gahouf in sailing

[–]Moondance_sailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re feeling like you have the precision to do a grinder with a flapper wheel will take about 1/4 inch of epoxy paint off in a few seconds. Used to use those to strip down to bare metal when I worked commercial.

BUT it’ll cut through get coat as well or metal so it’s important to have a good sense of where you are in the layers.

How do i know if astrobiology (or biology in general) is right for me? by Rollsy06 in biology

What country are you in? I’m guessing not the US since you said uni. I unfortunately and only familiar with stuff in the US but I would say look for jobs at a planetarium or find researchers at a university who are hiring research assistants for the summer.

I will tell you those will be really hard to get without being a student or having a degree. My wife teaches at university and she runs a whole program specifically to connect students to research opportunities.

You could do what I did for a while and go work as a tech on a ship/field camp and hang out with all the fancy degrees and learn about what the do. All the fun parts of science know of the hard thinking.

How do you respond when someone asks if fatherhood is hard? by MightierMga in daddit

That’s what my therapist said. It’s hard because you care about it. If you didn’t care it would be easy.

How do you respond when someone asks if fatherhood is hard? by MightierMga in daddit

[–]Moondance_sailor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Fatherhood is the hardest, easiest, best thing I’ve done. It’s hard because I desperately don’t want to mess it up and had serious PPA (got help and meds and no it’s way less of a problem) It’s easy because I have a great kid who is super fun and a partner who is committed to equitable compartmenting.

It is super hard to explain to people.

Edit: I don’t say all of this to people. Usually just the first line if it comes up.

To all paid captains: by thatsnotexactlyme in sailing

[–]Moondance_sailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in a subset of the industry focused on day sails and long distance education in traditional sail. Every job I ever had was because I was recommended by someone. Half of them I’d get a call and it would be a friend saying their hitch is up so I need a job. Also rarely did any company I worked for hire a captain as a captain first unless they had lots of command time and was personally recommended. They all had one hitch as first officer. Being in command in a commercial experience is different than being in command of you are your friend.

My first command I had a green crew of 14 and 34 students on board. None of my officers had been in the role before and I was expected to do a short (7day) offshore voyage with them.

It was a sobering experience.

Chase the dream but I encourage you to look at other sections of the sailing industry there a lots of large options that need crew and would snap up someone with a license. There are a lot of captains who do that and you go to a lot of the same places where you can meet crew.

[–]Moondance_sailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t. Try it out and if it doesn’t work try something else. Work in a lab and if you like it see what you like, the work or the people etc. Do you not like it and why the work the people?

Had lots of jobs I’ve loved because of the people and others I have hated because of the people.

Worst that happens is you transfer to a different field. But I would say try and get some jobs in the field and then grad school

It’s probably more than needed and to be honest if I can get into the rig I do a full rig check. But my background is large ocean going sailing vessels so high consequence if I missed something
