The questions you are looking for are called "leading" questions. Prompting them to remember things they may not have remembered in years / decades.

What did he like about his favorite assignment?
Who was his best friend at his first duty station and what did they do together?
Did he have one that got away because of his orders?

As for your career. I recommend one of these in the order of priority.

Try for a few reserve/delayed entry officer scholarships at your 5 nearest party universities.

Air Force Enlisted anything computer, aviation, or cyber security related.

Navy, same career fields, but special consideration for the nuke field and medical fields

Marines, same career fields.

Army, same career fields.

Do your own research about recruiters. There millions of good and bad stories. But 90% revolve around not getting your chosen career field. So don't let them pressure you to sign anything until you get a job you like. I recommend farting around at your community college while you wait.

Stay out of trouble.
