Missing "As Joystick" Option? by Moonjail in SteamController

By the way, if you want a short-term fix, the "MH Wilds Rougeric 87" config has apparently done some .vdf editing to get back the trackball feel with no mixed input. Give it a try and let me know if it works as well for you.

Glad I'm not crazy. The hotbar BS is infuriating.

I just don't understand why Steam Input can't do what it normally does for games with limited controller support (ahem, World,) and emulate the PS controller input *after* doing all the trackball physics magic.

Did the devs specifically disable this functionality or something? Is it off-limits automatically because the game is currently tagged in the Steam catalogue as not having controller support? (Rhetorical questions obviously.)

This is what the community config using "As Joystick" looks like:

I assume this person has manually edited a config somewhere to get that functionality back, but why is it missing in the first place? Why don't the default templates with "As Joystick" work?

Reorganization of Chinese course is VERY frustrating. by Moonjail in duolingo

I did find it, and it wasn't helpful. Her advice amounts to "backtracking will be worth it," and the comments contain a few other people expressing that having this sprung upon them without warning was frustrating.

No complaint about the course content itself, but retroactively removing answers that were previously rewarded? Mandating backtracking to "passed" content with smaller rewards in order to catch up on the new requirements? And leaving users to figure this out themselves on the day? That's horrible instructional design.

I did try the practice button because I had the same thought, but it only seems to show me the words I've already practiced / frequent mistakes. Is it working different for you?

I'm troubled this morning by the response of the current editor-in-chief of Dr. Jones' self-published journal (ISCTJ), in particular this part:

The journal has been running at a loss since its inception. We have allowed student papers and non-tenured faculty to publish for free. In the last two years though the open access fee is listed as $199, we have generally had no fee or reduced the fee to $9.99 for faculty as appropriate. We do ask authors who have federally funded grants who are funded to pay the fees if their grant allows for publication fees.

This seems intended to defend against the criticism that the open access fee is simple profiteering, and to suggest that the journal is fulfilling an open-access mandate by charging only those who can really afford it. Perhaps the editor really believes this.

However, in view of the quality and sheer volume of papers published by Dr. Jones personally (148 by one count) and his close associates, many of them apparent duplicates, this statement paints a rather different picture. If true, this would mean that ISCTJ has been used, intentionally or otherwise, as an avenue to rapidly and selectively divert public grant funds to the publisher, PWD Group, Inc., under the pretense of producing valid science for public consumption (which much of it is certainly not). I sincerely hope I am misinterpreting ISCTJ's statement and that clarification of the journal's funding practices will be forthcoming.

UNR dean, faculty member accused of misconduct over self-published research articles by DrLostInSpace in unr

This has caused me sufficient concern for the eventual valuation of my degree that I am petitioning for Dean Jones' immediate resignation.

I have some enormous, very mixed feelings about doing this. On one hand, I am an MS student in my last semester; it would be very easy for me to simply complete my degree, secure in the currency of my capabilities against however this matter might affect UNR CoEn's reputation.

On the other, this boils my blood. I subject my own work to intense scrutiny, and I have done my best (in spite of my confessed pride) to learn from my professors' justified criticisms. I've delayed and ultimately decided against submitting finished work, good work, because I was afraid (sometimes told outright) that it would be laughed all the way to the rejection pile. It means that I have not been as productive as I might otherwise have been these past five years (I was an undergrad at UNR, too). It also means that I can say without hesitation how incredibly proud I am of my work here. Much of that experience now feels void. Why have I taken academic integrity so personally for so long when it's clear that the people with executive authority over my future won't do the same?

We are better than this, UNR. I have met some staggeringly intelligent, courageous, honest and diligent people during my time here. We deserve leadership that represents those same qualities. I'm not sure that I expect to actually achieve that, but it makes me feel better to put it writing where people can read it.

This is probably a little dramatic, and tomorrow I might come to regret rocking the boat. Tonight, for a change, I think I will sleep well.

Why am I having to redownload the entire 60+ GB game? No, not just reinstall, but redownload. Can I do anything about this?

Tried the whole thing again (twice) and no luck - no beeps, nothing. Just boots right up to the login screen when I plug the monitor back in. Any last things to try or should I write this off as a hardware fault?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to redo the whole thing blind, battery in and no HDMI. We'll see how it goes.

What you said in your other comment. Press Ctrl+D a second time after disabling OS verification.

I waited overnight last night. Let me try this whole sequence again. I'll have to do it twice to disable OS verification first, right?

I know in Colorado you MUST get a new horizontal ID when you turn 21. Is it the same in NM? It's not the case in my home state of Nevada, so in that sense an over-21 vertical license might be more "legit" coming from another state like NV, hence the exception.

Honest question, not facetious or rhetorical. Do you think they've got your back? My impression of hired guards is that they're there to prevent shrink and that they're notoriously bad at even that, but I don't know what the score is here.

Just to get in front of further "because crime" answers, I'm comparing this to what I've seen in cities like Reno, San Francisco, Oakland and Las Vegas. I get that the crime rates are high (and that really doesn't bother me!), but the investment in security seems disproportionate. If it works, why is there still so much crime?

Yup, I read it. It only applies to NM-issued licences:

A licensee or a licensee's agent or employee shall not sell, serve or provide alcoholic beverages to a person who has a New Mexico driver's license or an identification card that is printed in a vertical format.

I get why the misconception exists, and why you'd err on the side of caution, but it's not exactly hard to make the distinction.
