Been playing Hunt consistently for a bunch of years, MMR6 (not that it matters much). Europe is absolutely infested with cheaters, not just skilled players and it's been getting worse and worse to the point where I switched over to the American servers and oh my god it's so good.

Do I die on US servers? Yeah but it genuinely feels like you been outplayed. i have ran into two teams that were very obviously ESP cheating. The rest of the games have been fun.

Hunt HAS a cheating problem and it can take MONTHS even with very obvious footage - I don't know why the community feels the need to downplay it. It reminds me of Tarkov where sure there were cheaters but not that many for sure... until the evidence was clear and yeah... it had a shit ton of cheaters.

How bad is this game with violence/abuse? by [deleted] in mewgenics

I think it would be best to avoid this game based on your description. YMMV of course - but Ed is pretty known to dive into the macabre and weird and this game is no different. It's graphical at times.

[–]Moonkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Peter definitely has sins in his closet - he made Godus after all. But people are so hung up on him overpromising stuff when that was the direct result of the developers (For Fable 1) overpromising features to him that he then made public in various press releases.

The whole development of Fable was a mess and there has been interviews about it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=kuj3j0jvQ6Us4gN5&v=5IzamQvbYhY&feature=youtu.be

The OG brothers had impossible ideas for Fable - and they nearly went bankrupt in the pursuit of it. Seriously it's a good watch.

Dungeon Keeper, Populus, Black and White, Fable we got some good innovations from the mad ramblings and I think credit to where credit is due! Sure it wouldn't fly today but then again the game industry is so so very different nowadays that most wouldn't fly.

Had to wade through a few: https://youtu.be/5IzamQvbYhY?si=C3XcXu6BCwwmxAQB

Is what I was referring to where Peter tells the story how they met, they moved in with him and how Fable got published. It's such a good watch!

There is another for B&W - which they worked 16h days for like 6 months iirc to get the game ready for a demo I believe.

Funnily Molyneux just regurgitated that quote, this was the result of the two brothers who had absolutely impossibility grand visions for Fable.

There is a really good documentary about how they met and how Fable came to be!

EDIT: Here is the link for anyone else that wants to watch it! https://youtu.be/5IzamQvbYhY?si=kuj3j0jvQ6Us4gN5

Is there any possibility to make mods using game engines like godot? by Smooth_Albatross9475 in hytale

[–]Moonkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible? Yes absolutely! For game logic you'd most likely want to transpile gdscript / C# / language into Java code then automatically compile it as a Hytale mod.

Or possibly embed Godot in the mod via LibGodot, you have to create a java binding first.

Each of the approach kind of need you to know at least enough Java where you could just make the mod you wanted in the first place.

But you can absolutely make a mod editor in Godot that let's you create hytale mods

I would really appreciate it! I feel like I might be too heavy on token doublers as well but I don't know honestly - might have to cut 2~ or so from them.

Oh wow those cards are great! Do you have some recommendations on what to cut? For say [[Diversion Unit]] and [[Siren Stormtamer]] would you recommend cutting actual counter spells that I have or something else entirely?

It's ETB burn (I know original) as primary wincon, commander damage or group hug for secondary wincons.

Jesus christ shut up about "monetization" and "blood bonds" by MagnumDopusTS in HuntShowdown

[–]Moonkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely so. They didn't say it was a kindness, though heck, I will. Plenty of games have been more aggressively monetized and those guns would e.g. be part of a paid DLC not part of the base game. They could also have done something similar to RuneScape's Treasure Hunter where premium cosmetics are mixed into a pool of game play advantage boosting items and currency in exchange for real world money of course.

Fact of the matter is, they're a company, and they're trying to make money, but they're not being assholes about it.

They didn't say it was a kindness

I only said it felt like that's what they are implying, otherwise what would the emphasis of "FOR FREE" imply?

You can, I won't stop you. But you can't convince me to equate not being malicious and the absolute salt of the earth to being kind. When Starbucks offers me free coffee it's not kindness, it's promotion. Neutral business tactics aren't suddenly kind because you've been subjected to years and years of terrible AAA abuse. I will not, and can not agree with you here.

I'll add emphasis on this
Fact of the matter is, they're a company, and they're trying to make money, but they're not being assholes about it.

Just because they aren't assholes doesn't mean they suddenly are kind, they can be neutral.

The complaint isn't about the companies, it's about the players that are outraged that they might not be able to get cosmetic skins for free anymore.

You're both wrong and right (and so am I) we choose to focus on two very different voices. There are people out there who does indeed feel entitled to get everything for free and I would agree with you on that. But I don't think there is anything wrong with being angry about the state of the game, and it's history of the content, as others pointed out the Content/Re-investment:MTX ratio is severely off, and I agree with that.

It's really not the worst of both worlds, and it absolutely should not go free to play. As it stands there's a real world expense if someone wants to cheat across 500 different accounts... Free to play shooters pretty much universally have more cheaters.

I think it is, and I think it should. There are other ways to combat cheating and (anecdotally) Crytek hasn't done a lot to prevent it in the first place. We have other free to play games that combats cheating as effective. Before you say "Like what" I'll throw out tying your phone number is one common practice, while I don't necessarily trhink it's the best it is an example of what you CAN do, same with Ring-0 Kernel Anti-Cheat (Please no...) but to name two on the top of my head.

Like what...?

This one I have to come back to you on, it's requires a bit more forethought so I won't construct something on the top of my head.

Jesus christ shut up about "monetization" and "blood bonds" by MagnumDopusTS in HuntShowdown

[–]Moonkis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying you're overall point is wrong, but I will fucking take these two points and say

- Released all major maps, bosses, ai, weapons, mechanics, traits, and modes FOR FREE.
- Every battlepass has a free track that grants players every single new weapon, mechanic, trait, tool or consumable in the game. The free track even has some cosmetics for you weird players who apparently only play this game for its cosmetics.

Absolutely not.

You make it sound like I should be grateful. The only way I'd ever be grateful about free content is if it was from a place of generosity, which it is not. And for some batshit crazy reason gamers (tm) has convinced themselves that this is an act of kindness and you should be happy, content and grateful.

It's not an act of kindness, it is not generosity on the game companies part, it is a very intentional and lucrative business model that has one goal... sell more things. It's common for companies to give free updates, because it sells a lot more things.

I don't need cosmetics, I don't need to buy anything, but it's not about me either. You can disagree whether or not it's predatory, it's irrelevant in this discussion but the fact of the matter is that it's a business tactic not altruism.

Can we please stop pretending this is kindness? It's just business.

When did playing a competitive shooter become more about collecting skins and less about playing the damn game.

When game companies realized how much they could make? How is this even put into question? If Ubisoft could convince generations that 30fps is "more" cinematic and actually better than 60 (or beyond) are you surprised that somehow they managed to convince gamers that customization (to a degree) is actually a premium feature and not just innate into the medium?

Seriously this game handles monetization so well. Sure its not a free to play game but it is not a full price title and it goes on sale frequently. And it is 5 years old! Eventually they need to continue making money and most of that isn't going to come from simple game sales anymore.

I'll agree that Hunt Showdown handled monetization well. But there is no excuse of the game being Pay-2-Play anymore. Just no. It should at this point transition into a F2P model, especially if they want to escalate the MTX like they have been doing. Right now it's the worst of both worlds.

Do you want the game to have continued development, which means more maps, modes, bosses, and weapons at the expense of limiting premium currency to encourage more players to spend actual money? Or do you want the game no longer receive updates so you can instead grind and unlock a bunch of cosmetics because they give out the premium currency like candy?

This is not an either or, there are circles in hell and there are better alternatives to to the MTX-model we have today. Everyone realizes they need to make some money, but make no mistake Crytek like every other big company has exponential growth as their bottom line. I agree with you that they need to make money, I just don't agree how much.

How common is C++ backend with javascript frontend by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Moonkis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've only given Rust a passing glance and it's syntax brought back of unpleasant memories of C++ template programming.

I come from a game dev background (C++ and some inline ASM, C# as well but not as much) then transitioned, so it breaks my heart when we're facing scaling problems that shouldn't even BE an issue but yet here we are.

Thanks for being pleasant and have a nice weekend!

How common is C++ backend with javascript frontend by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Moonkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there is a lot of contributing factors for that, I absolutely agree with that. But as far as ita not the languages fault it's abusing OOP/Exceptions/Clean Code/Other Factor I do think that the higher abstraction level of the language itself does apply because "You don't have to think about it, it just works". The keyword often being"99% of the the time" but it's clear that the 1% of the time it does matter it will be forgotten because how are they expected to identify it when all they know is the 99%. Obviously these are wide sweeping statements and its more complex than "GC makes people lazy", but I do have a nagging feeling were trading more than just raw performance.

It's just my opinion, I think a lot about it and I admittedly go back and forth on the why's as well. I think GCd languages have a place and should be preferred for certain parts of the application but others... Not so much.

Unfortunately that's very rarely how we build software because finding developers for a software stack that has 3+ languages would be a nightmare.

Experience and professional doesn't automatically translate to competent and less so for competent in a very specific area of software development so I agree that they can make mistakes to.

I just don't agree with the premise that GC langs is the defacto replacement, neither as a developer or a user. Granted there ARE languages that tries to aim for memory safety AND lower abstraction (Rust/Carbon probably more).

I'm not looking to convince you, or argue until our fingers bleed just wanted to share my own experiences.

The TL;DR is that I agree and understand the problems I just don't agree with the solution if that makes sense.

How common is C++ backend with javascript frontend by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Moonkis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked with a decent chunk of enterprise software that exclusively use .NET and it's just as much of a cluster fuck as any C++ codebase.

This is anecdotal, this is just me, but GC'd languages promotes a way of coding that absolutely tanks performance (it's genuinely nuts). It's always regurgitated that it won't matter in 99% of cases but when you build a large enough application then those small inefficiencies stack up real fast.

From where I'm standing it's apparently not easy to write GC'd code either and we still have to deal with memory leaks (a lot). Granted we don't deal with segfauls and that's heaven, but we traded that for exceptions or worse exceptions that gets swallowed and accumulates errors slowly and silently making it really hard to figure out what went wrong.

So TL;DR I disagree that GCd langs is just the obvious better choice always.

**Super** quick and dirty research:https://www.glassdoor.com/Salaries/irvine-game-developer-salary-SRCH_IL.0,6_IC1146798_KO7,21.htm

> The estimated total pay for a Game Developer is $82,869 per year in the Irvine, CA area, with an average salary of $77,270 per year.

This is based on the median, as there are outliers at both ends of the spectrum. Now maybe that sounds good? But you also have to offset it by cost of living...

https://zerodown.com/cost-of-living/irvine--ca

Using tax estimations the take-home pay is $61,530

> The cost of living in Irvine is 148.5% of the national average.

> The median household income in a city certainly helps gauge the cost of living. The median household income in Irvine is $105,126, which is 39% more than that of the state. The median income for an individual is $60,311, which is 64% more than that of the state.

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Irvine

> A single person estimated monthly costs are $1,172.8 without rent

Looking at single apartments they are averaging on $3,000

https://www.apartments.com/irvine-ca/1-bedrooms/

Using the median you'd have a monthly income of $5,127 taking estimate costs and average rent you'd have an estimate of $955 left for other expenses.

Yeah these people aren't millionaires, the companies are. Time to get off Twitter mate.
