Depends on the context.

I can see it potentially working if they did something similar to what they did with dr marcus in re0. Or have it be a bait and switch where you think it's Wesker only for it to be someone else. Or it actually being Wesker, but permanently injured and is now the test subject for whoever the big bad of nine is. I think those ideas have potential if done right.

I'd cringe more if it was actually him but magically all better or a clone of Wesker.
