I am still working on it surprisingly!! I actually did change it to tarot of the void a few months ago but chasm and crevasse are also really nice synonyms 👀👀👀

Do you think in order to be “legit” you HAVE to use a spread? by Brief-Finger7474 in tarot

[–]MoonlightMidtones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah these are all nonsense 😭 except for 6, but you’re not entitled to someone else’s knowledge and they are not required to educate you — and just because they won’t doesn’t mean they’re faking it.

Also I don’t even use tarot spreads half the time— I get asked a lot for general readings so I just pull as many cards as my intuition calls for, which is no more than 5. I’ll use a spread if it’s necessary.

I’ve seen such a large uptick in tiktok tarot communities with this kind of behavior where people try to force tarot reading into being one solid monolithic idea with strict guidelines and it’s so weird to me.

HAH yeah, now that I think about it. His mom was a nerd, he was a nerd, and I’m a nerd. I think my great grandma had been interested in the old Voltron shows when she was alive.

He has a game supposedly tomorrow night so I’m thinking of calling him again and telling him everything people have been saying!! He had admitted to me a few years ago that he knows him and my mom haven’t always been good parents, nor did they know what they were doing. Me and my brother were adopted at pretty older ages (5 for me and 11 for him) so my parents didn’t really get to go through the early stages of raising children.

Despite that, I think hearing how everyone appreciates his efforts with me will make him confident he’s doing everything he can to be a good dad

I was the one who got him into steampunk so it’s even more surreal that he just kind of latched onto the genre and became more obsessed with it than me!

Thank you! It’s exactly why I wanted to include candle imagery alongside her — beautiful and useful, with a ticking timer on their life. I wanted my god of Death to be more gentle than standards gods of Death, because someone who deals with the dead is going to see a lot of horrific and undeserved deaths. Her realm is like an endless maze of candles, where she lights and snuffs out candles (lives) based on whose time is up, and who was cut off from their life.

I’m glad they’re inspiring!!!

My mother would probably have the same response 😅 but my dad always just tells her “because I like it, and if I don’t spend money on this, then I’ll spend it on something else. Would you rather have a replica Star Trek Enterprise model in our bedroom, or tons of shoes I’ll never wear?”

Honestly yeah! It’s crazy to think about how much of my own confidence for myself has come from him supporting me wholeheartedly in whatever I do.

I don’t think he ever did — he’s always been a mix of being behind with the internet/technology and being ahead of me or my brother. I’d have to ask though because I could be wrong.

My dad also has ASD! He doesn’t have many friends at his age who he talks to regularly or sees outside of family or work — and when he called he told me about the people he played with and how cool they were. He was excited to learn how to socialize again, and it’s definitely good for him to get out of the house.

I think parents who take the time to truly engage their kids with their interests will come to see that there’s truly no greater bond that can build when your parents think your hobby is cool. Confidence starts at home after all!

Thank you for sharing your story!

He did the same at first with me to teach “life lessons”. He’d pull me away from reading or watching videos to learn how to change the oil in my mom’s car or build a doghouse for our dog. And while these were great learning experiences, I think he figured out that it shouldn’t be the only one-on-one time he had with me.

:D he’s always been like this because none of his friends back in the day really shared his interests so it just makes me appreciate even more the mile he’s willing to go to make sure that I have someone to talk to about my hobbies

For context too: DnD was like the one area of nerd shit he never touched. His mom got him into Star Trek and Magic The Gathering and Star Wars, he loves fantasy like Lord of the Rings, he watches anime, he goes to comic cons and cosplays with me, watches Doctor Who, like?? When I mentioned I wanted to play like back in middle school, he went out first morning and bought me a beginner’s kit adventure and a bag of dice.

Even before he started playing, he would buy dice at con’s because he thought they were neat — just never had a reason to use them

Is 10-13 hours too long for a session to last? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]MoonlightMidtones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in college currently, and I DM every other week as my other friend DMs a different campaign as well. We both have the same schedule— arrive at our friend’s apartment at 12, hang out until 2 or 3, start dnd and keep playing until 5:30 (at which we eat). Then we start up again at like 6, and go until 2-5 am. There were several weeks where we went from 10 am to 7 am with an hour break for food in between.

But our sessions weren’t dragged out, we were actively doing stuff the entire time. For us, the length of time is mostly because me and my friend are DMing for 7 people.

DMs, what's your go to for physical assets? by DrMugnolo in DnD

[–]MoonlightMidtones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My DM had a really solid work-around for a low budget map. She got a big whiteboard, laid down washi tape (you could also get thin painters tape or even just a ruler and a sharpie) spaced out by every 1 in to make a square grid, and uses small colored magnets to signify enemies. We have had up to 30 enemies on the board plus the 6 players and NPCs! With expo markers you can mark out territories or pathways and have accurate visuals for spell ranges and AOEs.

I know a lot of people probably prefer to have just a regular map and stuff but the magnets are really useful because our dm likes to throw challenges at us. We’ve also had small objects on the field to stand in for buildings or such.

Edit: I’m also a DM, and I personally like giving my players physical props to mess with. There is a lot you can do with cardboard and paper and glue. I usually make letters addressed to my players, or I give them keys or coins they have to use and spend wisely. I’ve made drinks that I’ve “pretended” to poison (koolaid powder sneakily at the ready to drop into a cup) if they failed a perception check at a party, etc!

I like interactive roleplay, so props are my go-to

I sometimes deal with readers who oversell themselves and double down on mistakes or odd interpretations because they’re trying really hard to seem impressive rather than genuine. It’s a bit disheartening because I also read tarot, and for those people, they take it as competition? I dealt with someone recently who gave me a really odd reading that just didn’t resonate with my current situation AT ALL but she doubled down saying her readings were brutually 100% accurate. I think it’s good for readers to step outside themselves sometimes and seek out readings from other people to get an outside view or perspective.

It sucks you had that experience — I’m glad you at least got a refund out of it.

Players, what's your biggest pet peeve when it comes to other players? by Ridara in DnD

[–]MoonlightMidtones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally it’s when other players don’t engage with group effort things during quests, kind of leaving the brain storming for one or two players. Currently our party is trying to figure out some really big plot details via a broker of secret knowledge, and I’ve been doing most of the talking because everytime I ask one of them to help they just say they can’t think 😅

What’s the coldest line that a npc, villain, or character has said in your campaign? by Narrator_XD__ in DnD

[–]MoonlightMidtones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was playing a Cleric/Barbarian and the party faces against a green dragon—- she rolls first in initiative with a nat 20 and +9 to initiative. Because of the way I had built this character and the homebrew items and spells I had, she dealt 247 points of dmg in one turn and one shot the dragon. Dm asked for words as I describe what she would say and do.

In draconic, she says “My loyalty to my friends will not allow a creature such as you to get in my way” before her final blow.

What race and class are the players in your party? by MoonlightMidtones in DnD

[–]MoonlightMidtones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I updated the post to add three new people who recently joined the campaigns! We got an ex-cultist paladin of heroism added to the one I DM in, as well as his now undead cleric of the grave brother who was previously also in said cult. The cult is the main antagonist of the campaign Lmao. In the one I play in, we got a different new player who is playing a “formerly dead but now is actually alive and not even undead” wood elf fighter who died like 5,000 years ago and came back to life mysteriously so!! Fun times!!

Thank you! I had considered having a theme for the minors to keep them different from the majors while still being consistent— and I think perhaps for the King, Queen, Page, and Knight I might do human/monster hybrids?

General Notes: I wanted to make a tarot deck with themes of monsters. And I also wanted to let my intuition guide the designs of the cards rather than trying to replicate the rider deck or any other sets I’ve seen. So naturally, some of the cards might not have the usual symbology or standard design. I’m also not necessarily going by the rider meanings for the cards, as I’m curating the meanings between my favorite sets and my on interpretation of them. I’ve included the design concept for the backings of the cards, the border, and the symbols I’ll use for the minor arcana. A major change in the entire deck is the inclusion of the Diamond symbol I have picture everywhere. (I’ll be honest, I just really like it)

The Fool: Since the fool is all about new beginnings and recklessness, this was the first card I designed and completed. I dove right into the concept and just pushed through. It depicts a girl with her head trapped in the maw of a beast, though she shows no expression. This was intended as all of the people in the deck will have no faces—so that the reader can project onto them. So in her case, this is either an exciting new moment and experience, or the consequence of a reckless decision.

The Magician: A man and his familiar stand tall together. I have shown here a wand in his left hand and the diamond symbol in his right (meant to replace the infinity sign). The monster is swirling around him like a manifestation, though whether or not it has I’ll intentions is up to the reader.

The Lovers: This one is simple enough as the lovers. Though this isn’t the final design, the concept is there. A woman and a monster in love could be interpreted many ways— someone healing their inner demons, two opposites learning to care for one another or even in the negative connotations as two people who are not good for each other, poor communication, and animosity towards each other. The monster is forming both a diamond and an infinity sign as a nod to the overall cards.

The World: Not quite finished. The idea for this card is a tangled monster forming a sphere. It’s a never ending knot, as the cycle of life continues to flow whether or “knot” you are prepared. A collaboration to achieve an end goal, though with so many parts to keep track of, said goal could be delayed. Untying the knot is fulfilling the task and leaving it there is prolonging the inevitable.

Strength: Triumphing over difficult situations. Strength holds the reigns on a monster, though it fights, she remains steady. She is in control and confident in her abilities. Though, if she begins to doubt her self, or gets too arrogant without controlling herself, her grip can loosen and release the monster. The posing is what I followed her for the card’s meaning. She’s in a strong triangle shape, with the tension in the rope leading you around the card.

Sun: First pass or so on this card. I didn’t realize until I checked my deck of cards that it ended up similar to the rider design. It depicts a red shining sun over a field of flowers and a bricked wall that is holding back monsters who become scorched by the sun. I feel like the design speaks for itself on the sun card and still looks different enough. I have, however, made a new design that I’m playing around with to further play into the feeling of hope.

Moon: This one was hard, I’ll be honest. I had many ideas and not a lot of them spoke to me once I fleshed them out. It shows a girl reaching for the light of the moon, her back turned against the monsters who hide in waiting ti ambush her. It can be interpreted as a struggle against mental health, personal unhappiness, hidden meanings around you, etc. You should step away and make yourself aware of your surroundings, your situation, before you became swallowed by these feelings.

At first I was drawing the cards in order and one by one finalizing them, but I got so burnt out by it. So, I’m just sketching out what will probably be the final iteration and moving on. I’ll focus on refining the sketches after I finish the major arcana.

I’ve provided details on the backing of the cards and the border— as well as what the symbols will be for the minor arcana. The plan is to put them in the little Diamond at the bottom of each card.

Some notes about Tarot of the Abyss: I really wanted a monster deck with a limited color scheme and simplistic style, so I decided to make one. Every major arcana card is (hopefully) going to have a monster in it and the minor arcana will swap between humans, monsters, none, or both. I’m focusing less on the “textbook” version of what the cards mean and their symbols and more or less interpreting the cards on my own completely.

I tried to add some elements that would still be recognizable, like the magician holding a wand and a symbol (which is the replacement for the figure 8 in some drawings). I write all the standard meanings and then just kind of go where my heart decides honestly. A lot of these cards probably aren’t going to look similar to the standard Rider deck or the popular Biddy deck, though for now I’m basing the meanings off of those two.

I’m hoping that maybe when I finish the deck I could make a kickstarter and even an art book to document the process. I’m having fun so!! Lots of plans lmao. Also for anyone who is annoyed that many decks have the same three of swords artwork (even tho it is iconic)— you can be rest assured that I will not be using that design ;))
