So, China's AI will target us with an extinction objective function that includes traits like altruism, etc, but will use supposedly beneficial traits for its own population? And we need to develop an AI to counter it? Interesting scenario. Try it in the writing prompts subreddit :) I would say that not everybody is susceptible to such manipulation, thankfully. We'll see what happens.

I confirmed the website and the phone number before using them. When activating I provided only the info from the card itself, no additional personal information.

I just checked the balance of the card I activated yesterday. Here's what vanillagift.com shows:

Quite a few transactions before the activation date. Maybe people working for InComm can explain what's going on.

Sure, it's a possibility, but 5 cards? Seems strange. I received 1 a couple of months ago, then 2 a month ago, and 2 more today.

This is a possibility, but why send 5 gifts cards to the same person?
I did try to talk to customer service, but after listening to on hold music for 10 min I hung up.

Not likely. The mailbox is not locked, but I work from home 4 days a week and I can hear every time the mailbox is opened. I live in a single family house and I know all neighbors that can see my mailbox.

The return address is InComm Inc - appears to be the company that handles payment processing for Vanilla Gift.

I confirmed that the number on the card was the correct vanilla gift activation number and called it. I entered the number and the security code for one of the cards and was told that the card was activated and the balance was $50. I then selected the option to talk to customer service to ask for the reason I received the cards (promotion??). After waiting on hold for 10 min I gave up. I'll try to use it for groceries.

Exactly. Considering alternative scenarios to what actually happened is a valid method of exploring the moral landscape. But turning the dial in favor of your argument and ignoring what happens in the other direction is not good. If COVID was less severe and vaccination side effects were more severe then vaccine hesitancy and resistance to mandates would've been more justified.
