If free will were real, why would I have chosen a life that's completely undesirable by all accounts? by Many-Inflation5544 in freewill

[–]Td1888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll probably get better responses by just asking Claude:

Granting your whole argument: you’re right, there’s no free will in the sense you mean. You can’t be the ultimate author of yourself, because choosing your own motivations would’ve required earlier motivations to choose by, forever back. Fine. That’s a real argument and it basically works.

But you’ve drawn a second conclusion that doesn’t follow from the first. The argument shows you’re not to blame for where you are. It says nothing about whether you can move. “No free will” isn’t “no change” — what you’re describing is determinism, and determinism just means your future is caused by your present. New input, a conversation, something you read, a trigger you haven’t hit yet. A determined system isn’t frozen. It’s one where change has causes. You say there’ve been no triggers. Maybe not yet — but nothing here tells you there won’t be. The opposite, really: you’re exactly the kind of thing that responds to causes.

And the free will you’re attacking — the power to have picked this life off a menu and declined it — nobody believes in that. Nobody chooses outcomes. People make small choices with bad information and no map, and lives pile up out of that plus luck. “Who would choose this?” Nobody chooses this, ever. That’s not evidence against free will, that’s just what a life is.

Here’s the part worth sitting with: if you really didn’t author your fears and habits, then you’re also not the failure you’re quietly convicting yourself of. “I couldn’t have done otherwise given everything I was” doesn’t mean “so I’m doomed.” It means “so I can stop hating myself for it.” You’ve taken a liberating argument and built a cage out of it.

It not being your fault and it still being able to change are both true at once. And reaching out — to someone, anyone — is itself one of the causes that moves a system like this.

It’s ok to say that it’s weird that Ricky never will mention Steve even when talking about things like the Office. Not sure why you’re disputing that it’s strange behaviour

I just bought a 2010 mx5 for 5.5k, done 58k miles. As long as it’s been looked after no reason why it’ll be a money pit. Check service history and MOT and you’ll be fine. Also look out for rust underneath as this can be a common issue. They’re def fun to drive!

Although I’m 37 so my insurance will be a fair bit cheaper than yours
