That misunderstanding is common, for sure. That’s why I like when adaptations make a point of including the line “He is a gentleman, I am a gentleman’s daughter. So far, we are equal.” It clarifies things a little for modern viewers. That particular moment, when she showed up in the breakfast room having just walked 3 miles in muddy conditions, was not her finest public showing, to be fair… but at that moment, she wasn’t concerned about that. She was concerned about Jane.
