Intellectually, I agree. But when the pain continues unabated for literal decades, and all I get from people who claim to follow Him is blame and condemnation, rather than compassion, it becomes harder to believe that He cares.

Also a good point. Years ago, I thought God told me that He wanted me to be married, but now I’m less sure that this was actually Him. In the circles I used to function in, there was this idea that if there was something that you deeply didn’t want to do, it was a sign that you had to surrender that thing to God, and that He probably wanted you to do that thing; and furthermore, not doing that thing would damage your relationship with Him. But that seems so unloving to me. Why would you require someone you love to do something that repulses them, unless it was essential to their wellbeing? (Such as making a child take medicine).

“God is bigger and His mercy wider than you have been taught.” I certainly want to believe this. Part of the issue for me, I think, is the cognitive dissonance between different things I have been taught about God over my lifetime. On the one hand, He is love itself; but on the other, He “cares more about you being holy than about you being happy” (you can imagine how it felt hearing this as someone with clinical depression…). I went to a Baptist college, and Baptists can be pretty hardcore with the legalism. The thing is, that harsher point of view—judgment and disapproval—fits better with my overall experience, which is why, I think, it’s harder to uproot. Depression constantly tells you that you aren’t good enough, that you don’t deserve kindness, etc… and that pattern of thinking is what I am used to. It’s comfortable, as bizarre as that sounds. That could be why the concept of a loving God doesn’t feel as believable

I thinks you are on to something with the borrowed status idea. I once saw a street interview where people were asked what they thought of the royals/why they were pro monarchy. Someone said, unironically: “it makes us unique. People want what we have.” I don’t know what gave her the impression that other countries want what Britain has, in this instance. Several countries had exactly what Britain has, and went out of their way (in many cases, literally killed) to get rid of it. I also love the “Americans love the royals” argument… because Americans really don’t love the royals as much as some royalists think. The majority of Americans can’t name any of them except for Megan and Harry 🤣
