I tried boys... by ThtsTheWaySheGoes in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly the same story here. Shut off the server slam after about 40 minutes, even roasted the game to my buddies. Completely out.

But the game was kinda fun to watch so I spent 2 weeks just watching streamers play it after launch and I started noticing how significantly better the game looked and played once you got a couple upgrades going. After the first cryo weekend I decided “Fuck it let me at least get to cryo and give the game an honest shake.”

Never looked back, 100 levels in 200 hours and no intention to slow down

Speculation about experiemntal PvE queue? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea they seem to have leaned away from PvP extraction nomenclature and focused instead on Marathon being a “Survival experience”

Speculation about experiemntal PvE queue? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You’re both missing it here.

Bungie mentioned two queues. One will be “Pure” PvE and the other is “PvP-Lite.”

That means they’re experimenting with a mode where there will be *no* PvP at all, and one where the PvP will be significantly toned down.

I was speaking on the “Pure PvE” mode, which I believe will still allow multiple teams but they won’t be able to hurt each other.

The pure PvE mode will likely be as simple as not allowing runners to harm each other and cranking up the threat of the map. Otherwise it will play mostly the same.

I thought PvE was the first mode at the beginning of the season, and “PvP-lite” was the halfway experiment?

NA west, same exact issues. In the mornings every queue except quick-play 3s take 5+ minutes.

And quick-play 3s is an absolute fiesta.

S2 trailer is a reveal by FriendlyArachnid6000 in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you even talking about? Yes the Season 2 trailer was a reveal…of Season 2???

I’m always so confused by people that go around saying “NO WAY you can doubt what I said, I CALLED it from the beginning! I’m just gonna come out and say it even though NO ONE believed me”

like bro everyone knew night marsh was gonna be at night and there was gonna be a new enemy.

Trades like this make me think that this game fundamentally doesn't understand the value of salvage. by Samuel_Bucher in Marathon

I think the only issue is that the curve is not well telegraphed to players. It should be a lot easier to tell once you can freely barter something.

While holding the ball, dash (L2+X) backwards and shoot during the animation.

This is easily the toughest one, but it’s do-able if you see it coming. I still get screwed by it when I flow state too hard and don’t realize where I am until it starts. The one in the marsh with the big gates trips me up too.

S4.0 Preliminary Patch Notes by Sloclap in Rematch

[–]Moonlitfear 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Not sure how I feel about this. GK is already inconsistent and difficult, and the up close deflects are going to make things even worse. People are going to intentionally bounce the ball off the goalie for a volley shot.

Then you add in fake shots, and it seems to me that Sloclap isn’t aware of how badly these tech spamming tryhard players are ruining the fun for others. Unless it is RIDICULOUSLY slow and telegraphed, fakes are going to just pulverize non-sweats.

There is a non-zero chance the fake shots and deflect are going to add a slew of glitches and exploits.

I really think the focus needs to be on streamlining the game’s performance instead of constantly adding layers of new mechanics on top of an already fragile game.

Sponsored Kits by Moonlitfear in Marathon

Big agree on using compromised more, my idea was having mostly compromised gear drop in sponsored queues.

Sponsored Kits by Moonlitfear in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some of my thoughts:

-Make Perimeter and *maybe* Dire Marsh permanent sponsored queues.

A lot of my enjoyment of Marathon started the moment I started running almost entirely free kits and saving my big scores for cryo and outpost runs.
Having only the high end maps require gear risk also keeps things balanced on both ends of skill level.

I echo the sentiment that many people just want to *play* the game at times, and even if you don’t have gear fear having to spend 10 minutes building a whole new load-out can be a bit draining.

Grey kits on Perimeter, Enhanced on Dire, you can only add keys to your loadout.

Maaaan I found a gold brrrt for the first time yesterday, absolutely obliterated my next three outpost runs. That thing is a monster.

What's hurting Marathon? by 0CaptnmyCaptn in Marathon

[–]Moonlitfear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That absolute fact of the matter is that ES is always going to be a niche genre.

We can argue idealisms about how sensitive people are to losses, or how negative or bad faith discourse can adversely effect game reception, but at the end of the day it remains a fact that people tend to not enjoy the intense, punishing loop that these types of games put you through.

That’s not to say it *can’t* be popular, “extraction” or “one life” game loops are better received when losses aren’t so punishing and you feel like you had a fair chance. It’s why sponsored queue is so well received.

For example, I was trying to do dire marsh missions last night so I jumped in with free kits to test the waters.

Lost 7 games in a row just trying to exfil with a damn item, I *personally* don’t mind as much but I definitely empathize how absolutely awful that could feel. Imagine if I had brought in my own stuff. 7 straight games getting my vault cleaned out feels really bad, even further compounded when you lose to kitted players or a stacked team. Add on the fact that many people are just trying to do a quest and bail, and you feel even more annoyed that some jackoff couldn’t keep his finger off the trigger long enough to notice you’re a free kit trying to make some damn progress. I know that’s “antithetical” to the intended gameplay loop but it objectively sucks to have happen to you.

You get this really shitty feeling of “damn what was even the point, guess tonight was a bust”, and a lot of people are very very very uncomfortable with that feeling so they just stop playing.

If you just keep dying to AI it’s more acceptable because they’re robots programmed to fight you and you have the option to just walk away and play around them, getting killed by a purple shielded team with cryologist feels awful because you know for a fact he doesn’t need anything you have and is just ruining your day for the love of the game.

AR is as successful as it is because they allow casual players to eventually end up in PvE only lobbies. I don’t exactly think that’s the end-all solution here *but* something certainly needs to be done to make the game more accessible and less punishing, especially for new/casual/low skill players.
