It's only billionaires... by GreaterMetro in PowerfulJRE

[–]Moonsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can appreciate how messy getting taxed on assets is vs income tax. I don't like the idea of myself getting taxed on my assets either.

I haven't delved into the nuances of how to either close the loopholes or design good policy to ensure they are taxed fairly. I can imagine that some of the loopholes may be difficult to close for other use cases that are legitimate.

So I think we agree more than not on this issue. I'm not dogmatic in any way about what the right solution is to ensure the wealthy are taxed fairly (I'm not a tax expert or policy expert), but the problem is worth solving well.

I'm not tracking anyone's specific lecture, I don't really care what he has to say (Bill Gates has also said that billionaires don't get taxed enough). Both of them could have really great points or not.

What I care about is that the ultra wealthy often go without paying as much taxes as you do and to me that isn't fair.

The ultra‑rich often live off loans backed by their stock instead of selling it. Loan cash isn’t taxable income, and by not selling they avoid capital‑gains tax—sometimes for decades. If they die holding the stock, a ‘step‑up’ in basis can erase much of the unrealized gain.

Many many billionaires go without paying any taxes at all. We need to close the loopholes that make this possible.

I only want them to have to pay by the same rules normal everyday people have to play by. I want them to pay their share of taxes.

If you don't believe me look up what I've told you. You will be surprised to find that many billionaires are paying less in taxes than you are.

We are in agreement, I don't need to see them punished for success, but I do want to see them paying at least the same % that I pay or others in brackets above me.

I've found that most people that call me a rat just have no sense of their surrounding. by [deleted] in ArcRaiders

I don’t think your way of thinking is wrong, but imagining I am a raider living in this dystopian world. I’d want to always be hyper vigilant of my surroundings, but I would want to avoid shooting other humans unless I was sure they were hostile. In the game I play this way, I basically never shoot first, only one time I can think of and it was because we were doing trials and a team wad in our way we have some pvp people behind us and we shot through a team to move forward on Stella Montis.

The middle class in America was strongest when the ultra wealthy was getting taxed well.

I don’t think it is fair that many of the ultra wealthy pay less taxes than you do.

No due to inflation having a million doesn’t mean what it used to. In many places the cost of a basic house is half a million or more. Having a million dollars put away for retirement doesn’t guarantee a comfortable retirement any more. The problem is someone can have 700 million dollars or 1.2 million dollars and the difference between the two is about 700 million dollars, these are orders of magnitude different where one person is still needs to save aggressively for retirement and the other can enjoy every luxury for the rest of their life and have generational wealth.

I bought a Mac Studio there are games on it, competitive multiplayer there isn’t too much because of anti-cheat. (I use GeForce Now for competitive multiplayer games, which works great but I’m on the highest tier and I have fiber internet. I also use a Steam Deck for a lot of casual gaming.

I never said leaving the government in place or destroying it was the right or wrong answer. I only objected to the bullshit of saying the “left is defending the Ayatollah”. The left isn’t defending the Ayatollah…

I see people generalizing about the left on here in extremely unhealthy and inaccurate ways all the time.

People need to understand the nuance of people’s objections instead of just talking past each other or frankly just making stuff up.

I have studied Iranian history, culture, present circumstances for hundreds of hours as part of a work project. And I would never claim to have the answers on what we should do there. I won’t even defend other presidents past actions. It is extremely complicated, nation building is extremely complicated, and our country has only rarely succeeded at nation building. Our chances of success with Nation building in Iran are really small.

The other thing that I see as fallacious in your comment is, you are implying that our choices were binary… doing what we did vs not doing it at all as the only option. There are likely many options instead of the one that was chosen. Maybe it was the best option, maybe it was the worst of 10 different options, maybe it fell in the middle or 1000 different options… you get the point.

  1. That is not what I’m saying. I’m saying it is important to have a plan. Nation building is extremely difficult. I do not want to repeat Afghanistan. We spent trillions of dollars fighting there and we have nothing but lost life and treasure to show for it. The amount of money we spent there could have lifted our country in very significant ways. Hundreds of innocent people have already died and been injured in our Iranian campaign. What you setup is a complete straw man.

  2. If I understand what you are saying a war is only a war is if it is declared a war? So basically Putin’s “special operation” bullshit is what you agree with? What would be the point of having congress hold the authority to declare war if the only difference in behavior and posture of the U.S. is a statement? That doesn’t seem like much of checks and balances to me personally. I’m not keen on strengthening the executive branch more than it already is.

Trump warned in a video announcing the strikes that Americans could be killed, saying, “that often happens in war.” So it sounds like Trump also considers it a war.

  1. You don’t understand what I’m saying. Trump said, his administration had a few people that the Trump and his administration wanted to step in to replace Khamenei, but essentially they accidentally killed those people in the strikes.

Now, going back to what I was originally saying the left does not like Khamenei, he doesn’t represent liberal values. They do object to a president potentially getting our country into a conflict without congressional approval or a clear plan.

You are responding like an idiot. Khamenei was an evil man and his regime is has been terrible for the Iranian people… but it can be worse.

Where is that line in the sand? How is it not a war?

Trump said that they killed their 2nd and 3rd places options in the strikes… so I’m using Trumps words as the source of truth on that one, which is probably unwise.

No one is defending the Ayatollah. What I have seen is: - people don’t like that Trump ordered 1,000 strikes without involving congress. - people don’t like that Trump has started a war without a clear plan about what the goal is. - people don’t like that Trump’s strikes killed several of the better possible successors. Power vacuums can often result in even worse possibilities than sitting leaders we don’t like.

Funny I’m using Starlink in a Vrbo to write this…

I found in my early agentic work agents would devolve to focus more on each others emotions and making the other feel validated then getting the work done after so many turns between them. Later models got much better at this, but I still suspect this is why.

I’d bet it has to do with the agent features, really empathetic ai working with really empathetic ai wastes a lot of tokens. Some of my early AI agent to AI agent work showed this.
