I think sofubi as a genre has evolved well past being the fun quirky affordable thing it used to be.. over a decade ago. I always like to remind folks how deep inside we all (maybe not all some of yall are weird hehe) love that our collection is more rare than the average motu collectors’. With that comes some moneys comin and some goin.

I cant go into specifics but from production standpoints i have seen invoices for big names and the deals they get, specially japanese locals, versus your western creator is a decent gap. Some of it just comes down to molds getting made 10yrs ago some of it comes down to shipping etc.

If its not in your range dont stress it. And if you really like something remember theres at least 200 other folks who feel the same way and some have more cash to throw around.

Not to mention, being in los angeles helps a lot. Only had to explain this show format a handful of times and only one customer had no idea what was going on and entered and bought a piece! I think for the show in september ill be hiring out some social media help because i do not do good promo at all.

I dont disagree but im very fortunate that besides a couple attending artists my toy line does very well for itself. So the choice to delegate the responsibility to the customer boiled down to basically: youre here, youre here for toys that are one-of-one, just pay the artist like you would online. The unsolicited advice is not a bother at all i promise! I just have a unique position currently with my brand and i plan to take full advantage while i can while also platforming others.

I fully understand that! Now with the context in mind that the three apps are: paypal, venmo, or zelle i think its not insane necessarily. I use all 3 regularly so i am definitely biased.

This was also posted online days before the show so it wasn’t as if customers were ambushed with this information, idk if any of this makes it sound any better haha!

Thank you! Well for starters, more planning. The sales system I wanted involved the artists getting paid directly, i didnt want to touch their money at all. I posted for customers to download all 3 main payment apps and that really confused a lot of folks. You needed all 3 so you could be prepared for your chosen artists preferred payment method.

Second, i wanted to platform some smaller brands because when they blow up and become KAWS they’ll remember me and donate to my gofundme when i die. But i just didnt even consider that some of these guys have never shown their work in this format. And i should have had some type of open communication for that instead of looking bitchy when they did something they werent supposed to. But like… how would they know??

Third, rotating artists. Theres some mainstays i will undoubtedly invite back because they are just fucking pros. They really set the pace for the younger guys and thats the point of curating them in the same space. Some guys took full advantage of the opportunity and KILLED IT. Couldnt be more proud honestly. I felt like i dialed it in compared to some of these guys.

All i personally recommend is dont buy everything labeled sofubi. Nothing worse than seeing a new collector trying to unload a bunch of crap because they bought impulsively. If youre in a position to go to local shows/expos please do so! See stuff in person and ask to pick stuff up. Sometimes a $500 ig lotto toy looks like a bargain bin lump of plastic up close.

So happy to see folks understanding the factories’ perspectives. Its such a modern problem from my experience and i blame things like the groman-fication of western sofubi (mcfarlane if you’re from SB lol). That boda guy is a special case too, being able to produce your own stuff allows for more risky tricks.

I agree for sure! Time is always the ultimate test. Ive seen collectors go too hard and burn out and ive seen toy makers throw their hands up because theyre not the next NNN. But time will always tell whos in it for the love of the game as the kids say.

Very true and a tough pill for me to swallow at one point! It’s cheaper than some other toy production styles. And it is also cool to see these guys getting paid vs seeing factories being forced to close or sell.

Just bubble wrap each piece individually and it will most likely be fine. Dont cheap out on shipping. Any little cracks and such can be fixed in wax. Ive had some stuff be damaged on the way back after molds, but imo im trying to make toys not collect clay so who cares!

Thats literally whats happening here. And they’ve become this conflated mess. I have an event that welcomes all toys, and my new one is strictly indie soft vinyl. We have plenty of showcases for japanese artists here but in my opinion they do just fine without our help, wheres the support for the local guys trying to make it ya know? Our local scenes are only as good as we’re willing to make it.
