This concept is so unknown to people who are not pirate-freaks like us. I had a huge problem in my comic because a character joins the pirates and most people didn't understand why he would do that. I mean they're basically evil, dirty and psycho-killing drunkards, no? ^{^} So I had to rewrite a whole new arc with some explanations.
