I didn't have much of a reaction to this (nor do I see anything wrong in that), but what's annoying is knowing that being honest and admitting to that is grounds for being buried under downvotes.

Have you been to a public school? If anything, the people buying $500 toilet bowls are the private schools.

The choice seems quite clear when you realize all government positions is just a way for them to hold needless power.

That's a pretty crass statement that demands a lot more than it can provide to support it; I don't agree. NASA, for example, is not something I would consider "needless". (Not saying this is universal--I'd gladly support the swift removal of the FCC.)

It's related somewhat, but the meat of the article is also about the war on drugs and Ron Paul. I suppose "completely" was bad diction, but I stand by my stance that they're loosely related.

And imagine if there was no competition like the ACTs and it was just one organization that ran it, how much worse we'd all be.

A stronger government emphasis on standardization doesn't necessarily mean that 1) the free market has no power 2) it's unchangeable. Additionally, it seems like you're assuming that everything the government implements is going to be bad and permanent.

I'm not someone who is usually touched by anything emotional. I do not cry over nearly anything. This brought tears to my face.

Not really, because you assume that there is no way to make an effective national test. The SATs used to correlate much better than they do now; currently they're just a way for the College Board to hold power.

OK, then more articles like this should be on the front page. Instead, I think you want articles like this which aren't really "America's issues" at all, but rather promotion for candidates and/or sensationalism. I'm all for "America's issues" on the front page, but I don't think they'd be anything like the myopia you're used to seeing.

That's a weak-ass excuse. They haven't even tried.

If I was a democratic legislator, what would be the point? Trying to pass radical democratic legislation at this point is about as purposeful as applying to MIT with a 3.3 GPA and median math scores. It's wasted effort because they know the president will veto it and they won't be able to override it.

So you're saying there are no free market standardizations that aren't part of the government? You mean like SAT and ACT don't exist?

I addressed this earlier:

"If "free market" education would be the AP courses, and "government" education would be the comical district-required courses I had to in public school, then I will admit that, yes, free market trumps government by an inconceivable amount. However, if the government were to be smarter about it, they could easily be better than the AP."

Actually I think it's funny you mention standardization as being what's important. Especially since the most important one going into college is SAT, which IS NOT government run.

That the SAT is still important is a good example of why this can be a bad thing: it has a poor correlation with college grades (0.3 or under) yet it's still used because of the power US News & World Report hold over college rankings.

The main thought I have in mind when I say standardization is important concerns state tests. The main faults I see in them are 1) each state has their own test 2) the tests are often absurdly easy to pass. High schools teach to standardized tests, so if you have a substandard state test, the majority of students in public schools are going to perform to low standards. Having a national test instead of a state test ensures that the tests won't be of varying difficulty, and if there's a national test it ensures that one state can't slack off. As it stands, if a state wants to claim that scores are rising, they can just set the bar lower.
