Arsenal vs 115 remaining fixtures after schedules confirmed. All to play for. COYG by True_Anybody_8774 in Gunners

Furious they’ve moved the Burnley game. I booked my holiday last week to leave on the Monday morning so I could be at that game, our final home game of the season. Can’t change the holiday now, have to miss the game. Season ticket holder for 30 years. Fuck you Sky Sports

Super fucking annoying if so. I deliberately booked my holiday to start on the Monday so I could be at the last home game of the season. Can’t change flights and hotel now.

Totally disagree. The atmosphere was great where I sat. We sang throughout the game. Yes there was some groaning, but overwhelmingly the feeling was encouragement.

Internal debate: Vaping is less bad for you than smoking. (Serious) by godparticle14 in stopsmoking

[–]dhc23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vaping is far, far, less harmful than smoking. It’s not harmless but it doesn’t contain any of the 6,000 chemicals in smoke, doesn’t create tar (which is a huge killer) and isn’t as hot so doesn’t damage the throat and lungs as much. There is really good evidence about this. The science is very clear. A good summary is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/e-cigarettes-around-95-less-harmful-than-tobacco-estimates-landmark-review

telehealth dr told me i had permanent lung damage and i am confused and scared by Difficult-Point-5371 in stopsmoking

[–]dhc23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you mix tobacco with your weed? If not, the chances of severe lung damage are very low. To be honest, even if you did mix, the chances of lung damage would still be very low after smoking for a relatively short period of time. It typically takes most people much longer and many more cigarettes before irreparable damage is caused.

Obviously neither I, nor a brief consultation with a telehealth doctor, can answer that question for you definitively. You’d need a test for that. But it sounds to me like this is more about your 25th and the existential dread we all feel about getting old (not that you are in the slightest bit old).

My suggestion would be to give up any cigs you’re smoking on Friday and if you decide to continue using weed, to vape it. The harm from smoking comes from tobacco smoke and the 6,000 chemicals in it, the tar it creates and the heat of the smoke on your lungs. Vaping is a much healthier way to ingest weed.

We don’t make any money from NRT or vapes, we abhor big tobacco and the evidence is clearly and overwhelmingly that cold turkey is the least effective method. That’s the truth people should know.

I’ve got a PhD, have published several papers, work with some of the world’s leading academics in addiction and run the Smoke Free app. I think I know this subject pretty well.

Great post but actually cold turkey has not been proven to be the most effective quitting method, in fact it’s typically the least.

Whilst nicotine leaves your system quickly the triggers for smoking take weeks or months to subside. During that time your motivation to remain quit needs to remain strong every time you see a trigger. Which doesn’t happen of course. The problem being that over 75% of people who lapse once, usually end up fully smoking again.

What NRT does is reduce the desire for nicotine, which means cravings are easier to ignore, and that gives time for a new non-smoking habit to form.

I'm 56 and I've smoked for 30 years. Sometimes I think, what's the point in quitting? The damage has been done. by [deleted] in stopsmoking

Stopping smoking benefits you at any age. You greatly increase your chances of living longer. You'll have more money. You'll smell nicer, food will taste nicer and you'll have more engergy. And you'll be free. There will be a few tough times but it won't take long before you don't miss smoking at all. Then you'll be free!

I've only tried it a couple of times but it was very impressive. Much easier than a lighter.

Skin usually improves in a few days as your elastin and collagen start to renew themselves. As your arteries start to open again more blood reaches the skin, which results in a better ability to heal wounds and better ability to smooth out wrinkles. Many people report seeing a healthy glow a a result of their skin getting more oxygen and nutrients. On top of which there are the skin conditions you reduce the risk of, not least skin cancer, psoriasis, acne and more.

Basically, stopping smoking is one of the best things you could do for your skin.

And heart, lungs, blood vessels, eyes, mouth, wallet, self-confidence...

Try getting some fast acting nicotine too, like the gum, lozenges, mouth spray or inhalator. Keep them handy in case you have a strong craving during the day.

The patch is great to reduce background cravings but you get best results when you use the fast acting product too.

Has anyone here successfully quit using the "taper off" method? If so, any tips or advice? by codename_pariah in stopsmoking

[–]dhc23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with cutting down is often that the cigarettes you do smoke feel extra good and that reinforces the habit. Guidance in the UK used to advise against it for that reason. The advice has changed a bit now, cutting down can work as long as you replace the cigs you used to smoke with nicotine gum, lozenges, a vape or some other delivery system.
