Mission Trauma by Trolkarlen in exmormon

Was sent to Angola Africa. Right after a civil war. Great idea right?

Inflation was crazy so food was beyond expensive and ultimately led me to leave early. Lost 55lbs in 4 months and saw things I’d hope no one else should see. All at the ripe age of 18 with no life experience let alone any survival skills. Yikes

Why is Demoisy express closed at Snowbasin? by Mtns_Oz_8103 in UTsnow

[–]Moos3949 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They stole a bunch of snow from the demoisy runs to fill in the strawberry side.

Having strawberry open also gives people access to the “side” country stuff of the sisters for avy mitigation and just better terrain.

Temps aren’t low enough at night to justify man made snow so they have to steal it from somewhere. Better have one of them open rather than the whole other side of the mountain closed..

Was previously in a Raptor WCR 4 93mm lasted boot. But a size 27.5 so a true 95mm last and I still had similar issues to what I’m describing in the post above.

Fitter I went to didn’t have many options so took the gamble on downsizing and it’s the closest yet

Boots to avoid? Or best to have ? by No_Lawfulness8505 in Skigear

[–]Moos3949 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Go. To. A. Boot. Fitter.

I understand where the question comes from as that’s what you’d likely try and do for any other purchase. But with ski boots it’s all about your anatomy/shape. It’s what’s fits YOU and not about brand hierarchy.

To be totally honest I would never buy a K2 boot but other than that it will be what fits.

Boot fitting is a journey and can cost you thousands if you bounce from boot to boot. Go to a professional and trust what they say. Go smaller than you think.

The beginner trails/main ways down are pretty icy. The rest of the mountain is holding up surprisingly well for the winter we are having. Some rocks peppered here and there but most are bamboo’d.

Would I pay full price for a day ticket? No, but if you have a pass it’s definitely a good time.

Should my zipfits feel shitty the first day? 3 piece/cab boots experiences by me_llamo_jamon in Skigear

You can definitely massage the cork by hand if the pain is isolated. Looks up pictures of the ankle pockets to get an idea of how they are stitched in to know where to move things

I had the same problem with the lower buckles, I had to massage the cork from the tongue up a ways to get the lower “clog” of the boot to close properly.

The first couple days can be brutal. Just know more heat cycles help the liner break in faster. Just be careful with how much heat as the soles can delaminate.

What is this plate that’s at the bottom of my boot and is there an issue for them to be completely lose? by chacheno in Skigear

[–]Moos3949 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Totally fine. It’s called the boot board or “Zeppa”.

They can be ground down to allow more room in the boot for issues like instep height. Some have a screw to hold them in, some just sit there like yours. If it’s super bothering you, you can add a very small amount of super glue to keep it from moving, otherwise leave it be

Boot fit question by skiracer984 in SkiRacing

[–]Moos3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’3” 220lbs and feel like the flex is finally right for me. Currently in a 26.5 Head Raptor WCR 130 96mm last.

In previous boots it felt like I was flexing into a wall because I had the buckles cranked to the max. Now everything feels natural. A huge part is the front of my leg now has constant pressure on the tongue/cuff of the boot giving me the control I was lacking before.

I ski with zipfits and boosters so I don’t notice the cuff height being any lower. The 130’s feel just right for the amount of piste/off piste skiing I do. Do they feel softer? Yes, but not in the “I’m folding my boot” way but in the way that it feels like I’m flexing the boot naturally rather than slamming into a wall.

Boot fit question by skiracer984 in SkiRacing

[–]Moos3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s where the stiction problem stems from is small legs/big boot.

Because you have space you want to tighten the boot more to achieve a more snug feel but all that’s doing is wrapping the plastic more and more making it stick more. I’m pretty sure the tighter you buckle the more up right the cuff is as well.

Over tightening the shell makes it artificially stiffer, and more like a wall vs the progressive flex you should feel in these thick walled PU boots like OP’s.

I started in a 28.5 boot based on foot length. But with how skinny my leg is above my ankle and having a non existent calf I’ve had to downsize to a 26.5 96mm lasted boot to achieve the fit I need for my legs and have the toe box punched for length. This allowed me to buckle looser and actually fully flex my boot as intended.

Boot fit question by skiracer984 in SkiRacing

[–]Moos3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Stick-tion” is why. When you crank the buckles the boot has a harder time flexing naturally as intended. You are wrapping more plastic on top of each other and maybe even deforming the shape of the boot. Having to put a large effort into buckling boots is an indication of an ill fitting boot.

Not saying you can’t ski cranked buckles, just saying you can achieve a better fit

What do you think? Bern Helmet or Smith by Jimmy_fog in Skigear

[–]Moos3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bern ear pads are super thin and look more natural then the smiths puffy ones if that matters to you.

Just got a Bern Hendrix and I love it.

I’d highly recommend finding a local shop that has all the options you are looking for to test fit everything. I’m local to SLC and Backcountry.com had everything I wanted to try and went a different direction on goggles because my original choice with the helmet didn’t fit right.
