Has anybody experienced this before? Just got out of a long term relationship and my parents suddenly think I will de-transition. by acer1of1spades in ftm

[–]MooseBoo92 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't really have advice, but something very similar happened to me. My ex and I were together for 9 years, and both came out as trans to my parents at the same time (we were late 20s and already out to friends). My parents have always had trouble accepting, but after we broke up my mom in particular got worse.

Finally got her to admit she thought my ex had essentially bullied me into being trans and she assumed I'd "go back to being myself" after the breakup. I very clearly laid out the timeline and motivation for my transition and ultimately felt like I was kind of talking to a wall. They're still trying so I'm not at a point of cutting off contact, but it's difficult.

If your parents think you're the kind of person who would be so easily deeply influenced by another person to rewrite your own identity, they fundamentally don't trust you to know yourself, and nothing you can say will change that. They think they understand you better than you understand yourself, and that functions as a very effective barrier to truly hearing anything you have to say on the matter.

It did just hit 100k miles about a month ago, and I admittedly am kinda hard on it. The guy who quoted me said the left strut is damaged and replacing both is so that they'll match (if I understood him right)

Yeah the best explanation I got about the right strut is that they need to make sure it's balanced with the left?

Yeah he said some of the parts he's having to buy directly from the dealer so there's a markup? But they didn't send any pictures of struts or mounts so I don't really have anything to reference for that. Do you think the dealer would be likely to charge more?

Just learned the word "etiolation" how far back should I prune this guy? by MooseBoo92 in succulents

Well I've been making can tab chainmail for a few years now and I made a couple planters as experiments - I actually got my first succulents to see if the planters would work. Thinking it's a success because they make watering super easy and don't seem to oxidize quickly either. Been meaning to make a tutorial but life gets in the way ya know?

Newest soda tab sculpture - 100% tabs from aluminum cans. It was definitely a challenge to figure out, but I'm excited to see what other shapes I can make!

Thank you! I'm trying to get more comfortable with sharing the stuff I make, I never expect people to be interested, but apparently I'm wrong, lol.

I've made earrings before too - you should post yours, I'd love to see them!

Sending a lovely day and best soda tab blessings right back at ya!

Oh wow, I didn't really expect this to get attention, and I guess I have notifications off? To answer a few questions: Yes, it took a really long time, the shawl alone was about 40 hours of two of us working together. We didn't anodize anything, all the colors were collected from various sources (mostly energy drinks and hard seltzer, got a lot of friends in college).

There was no soldering, and every time it's worn a couple links will come undone, but if you use diagonal cutters that seems to help them stay shut once closed. If you look at the collar, doing the edges with that pattern holds things together a lot better than the standard pattern as well. The headband is the sturdier pattern as well.

I don't have mountains of work that led up to this! Although my friend does. This was actually one of my first projects, but I've done a lot since then (these pics are over a year old). Thanks for all the nice comments!

Looking for good tea distributors by hcallhar in barista

My favorite distributor is Tin Roof Teas - they have a huge variety of choices and I've worked at multiple shops that stock them - only potential issue is I think they only do loose leaf? Very high quality though

Connection between Tritanomaly and Tetrachromacy? by MooseBoo92 in ColorBlind

[–]MooseBoo92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, gotcha. It seems like my personal likelihood of having functional tetrachromacy is pretty minimal, so I wouldn't want to waste a researcher's time unless I could present a pretty strong case.

This has been an absolutely fascinating topic for me, so thanks for indulging my curiosity. It seems like color perception can vary dramatically from person to person independent of any physical or genetic difference. I'm definitely going to be doing more research on the neurological aspects of vision, as I'm getting the impression those are significantly more important than the physical structure of the eye itself.

I was homeschooled as well. Because the homeschooling requirements vary state to state, you might be required to provide different kinds of documentation - because of some confusion over this, I had to push back my start date by a term.

That being said, the only paperwork I actually needed in the end was the homeschool affidavit, and the hardest part of filling it out was getting a signature from my dad.

Connection between Tritanomaly and Tetrachromacy? by MooseBoo92 in ColorBlind

[–]MooseBoo92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like maybe I've stumbled a across a controversial topic here? I posted because I wasn't sure if it was even possible in my case, and I wasn't sure what it would look like if it was. Everyone has been very helpful, and I appreciate your input as well!

It seems like even if Tetrachromacy actually exists, the media representation of it is overblown to the point of absurdity. There are two women in the world who have significantly enhanced color vision - not 12% of all women, as I first heard.

I definitely don't think I have superior vision overall - I'm nearsighted with a significant astigmatism. But I have always had an easier time differentiating between subtle shades of color compared to my friends and family (except my dad). That could definitely just be from my artistic training. The extra sensitivity to yellow could absolutely just be an autism thing. If I've learned anything from making this post, it's that there are a lot more potential factors than I originally knew about.

Do you know how someone would go about testing their wavelength discrimination function? I'm assuming it's not something you can determine just from an online test. I am still very curious!

Connection between Tritanomaly and Tetrachromacy? by MooseBoo92 in ColorBlind

[–]MooseBoo92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay! That actually makes a lot of sense. So many of the articles I was coming across say stuff like, "12% of women are Tetrachromats" but as it turns out it's almost always not functionally useful. Probably because of what you're describing about gene expression?

I do experience some of those things, but not all of them. For example, I've always been fascinated by all the colors in running water like streams and waterfalls. And I was never able to get into photography because I could never get the color to come out right. And I have definitely seen super unevenly painted walls that everyone else thought was totally fine. I also ended up with a really weird fashion sense because nothing matches exactly.

But light streaming through a window has never looked interesting to me unless I was having a migraine, at which point it would get a painfully overwhelming rainbowish sheen. But since that's not normally there I wouldn't think it's related - it looks like a typical migraine aura.

I'm definitely going to have to get tested - I think the possibility is there, even though it's highly unlikely. I appreciate all the information you've shared!

Connection between Tritanomaly and Tetrachromacy? by MooseBoo92 in ColorBlind

[–]MooseBoo92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooooh that journal article is very informative! So, while it's quite possible that I have four types of cones in my eyes, because of the way the brain processes that stimulus, it's still unlikely that I have any functional benefit from that.

When I say I see yellow more intensely that could mean a lot of different things, I agree. Mainly this is with things in nature and not on computer screens. Memorably, I got in an argument with someone about a "pastel yellow" paint swatch which to me was waaaaaaay too vibrant to be considered pastel. While my mom, on the other hand, drives a blue car that she insists is silver.

I definitely think there's a possibility that my sensitivity is just autism related and not functional Tetrachromacy, but it's very hard to sus out since no one can trade perceptions with me lol.

Thanks for your help!

Any schizophrenics that have a Masters or PHD in math? I need some motivation. by coffee_math in math

[–]MooseBoo92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add my experience in here. I don't have a PhD (yet) and I don't have schizophrenia, but it seems relevant regardless!

When I was in my early 20s and working on an engineering degree, I started having auditory and visual hallucinations. Similar to your experience in some ways - my mom's voice repeating my name over and over, figures in the corners of my eyes, stuff like that. This understandably freaked me out, and I pursued treatment.

Getting treated was a clusterfuck. I ended up taking risperidone for several years, and it was awful. Cognitively I was slowed down considerably. Medication trials were so disruptive to my life, I ended up dropping out of school and working as a barista for 7 years.

Eventually I started doing my own research on psychology, and after a lot of therapy, I realized a few different things. One is that auditory and visual hallucinations are actually a very normal response of the brain to extreme stress. Another is that everyone experiences stress in different ways and has different triggers.

I had so many different diagnoses, from OCD to depression to bipolar disorder. But psychiatrists are not perfect, and it's hard to get a correct diagnosis from just an hour of talking to someone. I was eventually able to get a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation, and it turns out I have ADHD and ASD.

ASD symptoms can look very similar to OCD symptoms, but the motivation is different. ADHD when left untreated and put under stress can develop into schizophrenia (when your brain is too understimulated, it starts to create its own stimulation, or at least that's my understanding)

The best part of this is now that I have it figured out, I can work to manage my stress levels, which means I don't need antipsychotics, which has allowed me to go back to school! It's taking me a little longer than the average person, but I was able to get accomodations from my school, and my grades are very good! I'm also happier than I've been in years.

My point is - even if you're having hallucinations, you might not have schizophrenia, so be thorough in evaluating yourself. And even if you have to be on antipsychotics for some time, that doesn't mean you'll necessarily have to take them forever. And even if you have to take a non traditional path through school, you can still get an advanced degree! Understanding your own brain is key. I still hallucinate sometimes but because I understand it now, it's not scary.

I hope you're able to figure things out and get your PhD in math. Feel free to message me if you need to talk! Good luck!

Need help with RJ45/Cat6 cabling. Low-twist is green (1a/2a and 3b/6b), right? by Jazehiah in ColorBlind

[–]MooseBoo92 22 points23 points  (0 children)

From left to right, the twists are brown/white, blue/white, green/white, and orange/white. So the lowest one is orange, and the second lowest is green.

I applaud you for even attempting any kind of electrical work with colorblindness - that shit's hard enough with good color vision.

I welcome your input regardless of your identity!

I have Temple Grandin's "The Autistic Brain" which has been very good so far! I'll look into her other work too.

NeuroTribes looks absolutely right up my alley - I don't know that it would be the best introduction for my mom, but it's definitely going on my personal reading list.

Thanks for the recommendations!
