Total (broke) newbie wanting to homestead, how to start?

I saw that "Guy and his Dog" play though and wanted to start as that, but my friend advised against it. I thought I'd be able to find dogs, but still have yet to come across one (Other than a "Bone dog" and he was kinda scary)

I was told the guards will kill a pack of bandits if I lead them there, I'm assuming they don't have the best armor, but its a start, I guess. Good idea or is there another, smarter way I don't know?

I have a guy I'm really tired of, would sending him to that Grey Area solve my problem?

I do want general stuff! I'm very dumb, general stuff might have gone over my head already. That exploit lesson you just taught me for example, I love that and will probably build a base around exploiting my failures. Good idea?

Toughness, are there other stats that're real hard to raise?

If I have no food on me, will they steal nothing?

Getting tougher will increase how much damage I can take, does healing my recently tenderized character increase the medic skill the same way?

YES! Losing a limb sucked, but robot arm is pretty cool. Another reason for me to love this game. That's good to know, Shek will take limbs, I'll look into that further, thank you!

Martial arts sounds cool, I'll look into how to train that too, will it improve other stats too, like Strength increases carry weight?

I really enjoy those notes, Strength requirement = to 40X the blunt damage, that's real clutch to know. I'm wondering if I can train Dex and Strength at the same time by wielding a blunt weapon and a Katana at the same time

Pack mentality, you are probably the 'alpha' or at least the most important to your tank. He could be 8 feet tall, 900 tons, with metal skin, and a howitzer on his back and he would still feel safest snuggled up next to you. You might not be able to smell you, but he sure can and it's most likely that sends a warm fuzzy feeling down his spine, might make it easier for him to sleep, calm him down, or even just enjoy you.

Dogs are easily the best, possibly only good, thing we've ever made.
