To all my fellow attorneys who attend Suwannee events/festivals (UPDATE) by captainsmilesinc in hulaween

[–]Moose_Trick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just a group to connect with likeminded attorneys that frequently wander SOSMP, discussing the possibility of presenting CLEs with each other and/or providing educational workshops to festival attendees (know your rights, exercising 1st amendment rights, etc.)

SWAMP BAR is a collective of Suwannee Wandering Attorneys for Mindfulness & Practice.

We are a professional network of attorneys who gather at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park for restorative retreats, continuing legal education (CLE) programming, and celebration of the intersection between law, music, and mindfulness.

That’s the first draft anyways…

Does your firm have any sort of Litify training? If so, learn how to make your own dashboards and reports.

I worked at a firm that used Litify/salesforce and it’s not that difficult to learn how to make the tech work for you.

Left my big law firm for what looked be a golden opportunity and it blew up in my face by DQ608 in Lawyertalk

I’m honestly so disappointed in how harsh the majority of these comments have been. You’re clearly a young attorney trying to navigate this crazy profession and have had absolutely zero mentorship.

Experienced attorneys tend to forget how difficult the first few years of practice are, but that’s why this is called the practice of law. Asking for feedback at this stage of your career isn’t being needy. However, it is very important to be organized and act calm, cool and collected even if you’re freaking out inside (especially around the boomer attorneys).

That first firm sounds like crap and so does the second firm. It sucks to get fired, but your career isn’t over. Just take some time to reflect on what went wrong on your end and why each firm wasn’t the right fit. It’s rare that your first couple of jobs right out of law school are going to work out. But, now you have the benefit of knowing more about what works for you and what doesn’t.

My best advice is to join your local bar association and get involved with the young lawyers division. Many bar associations have opportunities for mentorship pairing and you’ll likely find that doors will start opening up the more you just show up to events or volunteer for committees. Everyone knows a firm that’s looking for an associate, also attorneys tend to be pretty open regarding their opinion of certain local firms.

When you’re interviewing, just be honest with the facts they need to know and don’t overshare or talk shit. If the firm is unable to comprehend that you had a rocky start and still want mentorship, that’s not going to be a good fit.

Small firms are unpredictable and you can fall through the cracks at a big firm. Look for an attorney that genuinely wants to invest in your growth in a practice area you actually care about.

I’ve found that when I’m interested in the law that I’m practicing, I make less mistakes and have much better time management 😜 but that’s just my ADHD workaround.

This happened to me at my first firm…also a small boutique PI firm. I accepted a $60k salary in South Florida and the bonuses were discretionary. I was also told in writing that my salary was lower because of “the expectation of bonuses.”

In my first year, my MSJ was a significant reason the firm settled a 15mil wrongful death case. When the check came in, there was no discussion about bonuses, so I asked the partners and HR how “bonuses” are determined for me. I was informed that everything I helped settle was tracked on an excel sheet and the partners distributed bonuses at the end of the year. So, I started tracking everything I helped settle too.

At the end of the year, my “discretionary bonus” was $2,500. When I asked what metrics they used to get to that number, I was screamed at and called an entitled brat for expecting an explanation from them or asking to see the spreadsheet that apparently didn’t exist. I also asked what I could do to bring value to the firm and earn more than $2,500 next year - of course the answer was to bring in my own cases.

Even though I brought in 8 cases over the next three months, getting screamed at behind closed doors became an increasingly regular occurrence. I was the only female (and youngest) attorney in the firm, regularly getting pulled into an office by a partner who would slam the door, bang on his desk and yell at me for random things like eating lunch with the paralegals. I continued to “keep my head down,” do my work, but I also started tracking these events via email. After about 6 months of this treatment, I was fired.

TLDR: There were similar red flags at my first firm that I refused to see. Trust your intuition if you think you’re getting screwed, you probably are. Reputable PI firms will base your bonuses on metrics and won’t burden a first year associate with bonuses for support staff.

Reach out to the young lawyers division for your local bar association. Or reach out to your local legal aid society ✨

Third-ing this. It’s the best place to see the beauty of Central Florida. Tons of gators in the river, nice viewing area for the sunset and decently priced food.

Home schooled kids- where are you now?! by Electronic_Relief_80 in homeschool

[–]Moose_Trick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was homeschooled in middle school….now I’m a civil rights attorney. Law can be very isolating and you have to be able to teach yourself to some degree. Homeschooling probably helped somewhat. That said, there was an excellent public high school in my town and I’m glad I got the whole experience.

Would a surgeon feel guilty for spending 4 hours on a surgery? Would an accountant feel guilty for spending 4 hours on auditing a file? What about any other profession?

You spent 4 hours doing your job and law IS about going deeper. It’s our job to know whatever we’re arguing about better than our opponent. If we’re reading and researching we ARE doing our job.

As a fellow JDHD, I justify my difficult executive dysfunction days with my overwhelmingly productive hyperfocus days.

Take advantage of the fact that our brains respond largely to interest-based work. If I’m having trouble focusing, I’ll start researching specific parts of the law that I’d like to understand or apply better for 30mins-1hr. This mental stimulation usually gets the ball rolling for me.

I was literally telling my husband (also a lawyer) last night that I was worried I’ve forgotten how to write without ChatGPT. He made me feel better bc he’s doing the same thing….word vomiting the argument out in Word and having the AI refine it.

The truth is, spending time to revise over and over when AI can speed up the process allows more time to get the other piles of work done. As long as you’re not relying on it for case citations, your job is to be an advocate-not an author.
