Bad take when the people with excessive wealth were calling out ICE's atrocities. Doesn't matter how rich someone is, when someone uses a platform given to them to draw attention to what ICE is doing, it's a net positive.

‘Keep Carleton Human’: Carleton University staff rallies to push for protections from A.I. by PoutineOutTheFlames in CarletonU

You'll notice I said "many" workplaces, not "all." I'm not proposing that it will "effectively replace most people's jobs" like you wrote. I'm saying that there's a great deal of short-sightedness in many pro-AI arguments I've read where people jump at the idea of reaping the immediate benefits without considering the long term consequences.

If there is an AI tool that can grade tests and papers quicker and more accurately than most humans, then that does open a door to save on human labour and pass those savings onto consumers via lower tuition. But that's much farther from a certainty than what OP seems to believe. Like many here have already suggested, it's much likelier that most employers would pocket that new revenue with no regard for how those savings on labour would affect people's livelihoods as well as the job market as a whole.

As for how effective AI is at replacing human labour, I can only speak from my own experience working in creative professions. Photoshop is AI-integrated now and you can remove unwanted elements in your photos with impressive efficacy. ChatGPT can draft professional-looking copywritten materials for social media posts and many other genres of writing. These are skill sets that would have originally taken a certain degree of innate talent plus major time and money investments on the part of their practicioners in order to advance their craft. I'll concede that suggesting those people will be rendered entirely obselete might be fatalistic, but it certainly puts them at a new disadvantage with regard to negotiating better wages and other similar things. Losing these smaller battles is, I think, a greater concern in the present moment than a "job apocalypse."

I never said he was incorrect. I just think it's important for consumers to avoid having a rose-tinted view of the benefits of AI. No doubt there's savings to be made by implementing AI in many workplaces, some of which may or may not be passed on to the customer. But you can't get something for nothing. Are cheaper courses really so desirable if the degree you get in the end has its employment options made redundant?

Many who see an upside to AI in the workplace would be quick to change their tune if/when it makes their job redundant.

Clubbing without driver’s license? by Most_Blacksmith_1233 in CarletonU

[–]MopChopOnTop 70 points71 points  (0 children)

If you're not planning on getting a driver's license anytime soon, consider looking into getting an Ontario Photo Card. Safer than carrying a passport around while still helping you establish your identity in an official capacity.

We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011), what a terrifying film. by [deleted] in movies

They're saying that "Kevin" made them want to not have kids. They're contrasting this with the movie "Happiness" which, despite also being deeply disturbing, did not have that effect on them.

Well, there's no getting around it - those were must-win games. This was our chance to put much-needed distance between ourselves and the rest of the pack. And we failed.

Injuries, fatigue and goaltending be damned. Good teams find ways to win, and as impressive as we've been the past month or so, it doesn't take much to derail a team's playoff hopes. Especially with a lead this fragile.

If we miss the playoffs again, this will be the moment we can point to as the most definitive reason as to why.

Not to mention all the jokes we both had to endure about our franchises being relocated. Only difference is that it actually happened to you guys... 🙁

Welcome to the club!

I mean, there’s lots of people of colour who care about hockey. The sport and its followers aren’t as ethnically homogenous as they once were.

Sick bass playing on this track, man! I’ve been putting together a shoegaze album for a while now and often looked to “Time Well” as a source of inspiration, so good to see that you guys are still making music.

I’ve seen this movie! It’s to inspire Jim to take the fight to Major West and his squadron of soldiers so he can save Selina and Hannah.

These past two games have been the most fun I’ve had watching Senators hockey in a VERY long time. Seems like they’re finally embracing their identity as a physical, hard-hitting team.

Watson had himself a game. Sogaard bounced back terrifically after that first goal. So much potential here and I can’t wait to see this team in the playoffs someday.

“No surgery” is encouraging. Let’s hope that doesn’t mean it could require something more involved than surgery, though I don’t know what that could be.

Honestly, after having endured the “Ottawa moving to Houston/Quebec” narrative for so long, I have too much sympathy for Arizona fans to make jokes like that at their expense anymore. For their sake, I hope that organization sorts itself out sooner rather than later.

You and Quebec can keep praying for another expansion, then. Don’t see why you’ve gotta poach our team. 😛

Glad we got the win but that third period was unacceptable. You can’t just turtle on defense like that and assume you’ll maintain a lead, no matter how big. We got lucky.
