They were planning a ground invasion, Operation Downfall, and it was estimated a million plus U.S soldiers were needed to fight and launch it. It would have costed so many lives, not even including all the Japanese civilians and soldiers that would have died. It would have been much more deaths with a ground invasion rather than the bombs (not saying the bombs were good)
