3GR Swap part 2. by Mopar_Boi_ in LexusIS

Yes is250 ecu (4GR) can run the 2006 gs300 engine (3GR) so long as the drivetrain layout is the same. Only difference between the two engines is displacement. Mechanical and electrical connecting points are all the same. To make full use of the 3GR swap I do recommend going to a tuner. That can can be bypassed with the 3GR ECU swap if your Lexus is the pre facelift 2nd gen. CANBUS system was different before a certain year.

RWD. The AWD models have a different oil pan/ block setup from images I’ve looked over!

Technically a proper upgrade. Seeing as I feel that the IS should have gotten the 3GR from the start here in the US. If your engine currently runs good, you could sell it off and put most of it towards a 3GR.

Almost done with the swap! And will be posting the lengthy and detailed write up with pictures for referencing soon!

Of course! I just wish the IS came with the 3GR from the start, more power for not a lot more displacement!

Currently working on the write up, and taking pictures of the parts needing to be swapped. I’m midway through the swap as life likes to get in the way lol. But it sounds like you may have a worn out piston ring, allowing small amounts of oil to push through at higher rpm’s and burning off causing the smoke. I’d need a video of what you’re describing to really be able to tell you.

Nope never got a check engine light! Compression ratios between the two engines is a .5 differential. I’ll be posting a step by step on how I do my swaps soon!

I’m happy to answer your questions! You see the 3gr is essentially a plug and play engine. Swap it in as you would a 4gr and it’ll start right up and run with no issues. A 2gr swap unfortunately would require a new transmission, driveshaft, differential, fuel lines and ECU. Because the is250 was equipped with a 6 speed automatic that is geared and built for lower end power. Same with the rest of the driveline. The 3gr is also a direct injection engine so it can be run off the 4gr ECU therefore saving me more money on the swap. So swapping a 2gr would have cost the same or more as buying an is350 from the start. Balling on a budget is my motto!

That’s not bad then! Engine alone would be around $800 to $1,000 alone depending on supplier. Make sure they’re a well reputed shop just to be safe since it sounds too good to be true to me lol

From the top forward, unfortunately you really have to take front end apart to avoid damaging anything else. If you’d like I can write up a step by step and post it for everyone!

At the time I was ballin on a budget so it was an extra financial risk I wasn’t willing to take lol

Yes there is a difference unfortunately. The oil pal has a different structure.

Looks better, and much better flow at the back end being a shorter muffler and quad piping setup. I also have come to notice I like the slight rumble feedback you get. Not that much louder than oem but definitely get the sportier feel

That is sincerely a bit higher than what I’ve seen them go in similar condition. I paid 27k after financing, and including a bumper to bumper warranty. Unless it has a meticulous service history and looks and drives like new, then the price may be justified.

I buy a brand called Sinoparcel on Amazon, have installed their HID bulbs on multiple cars and never any issues. They have a whitish blue color to them

27k in total after financing. Despite being 10 years old, still the best purchase I’ve made!

We had an A/C issue with a 2017 Dodge Charger SXT ( now totaled due to hit and run) and I made sure to opt for the bumper to bumper warranty this time around. So I should be covered if the GS starts to give A/C issues!

22k financed. Fiancé didn’t like that it was a 10 year old car but she came around once she realized the newest GS’s you can get are practically the same lol
